Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Reviews, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is impossible to cast even a careless glance over the literature of the last thirty years, without perceiving the prominent station occupied by critics, reviewers and essayists. Criticism, in the old days of Monthly Reviews and Gentlemen's Magazines, was quite an humble occu pation, and was chiefly monopolized by the barren rascals of letters, who scribbled, sinned and starved, in attics and cellars; but it has since been almost exalted into a creative art, and numbers among its professors some of the most accomplished writers of the age. Dennis, Rhymer, Winstanley, Theophilus Cibber, Grif fiths, and other eminent hands, as well as the name less contributors to defunct periodicals, have departed, body and soul, and left not a wreck behind; and their places have been supplied by such men as Coleridge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reviews and Critical Essays The subject of the following brief memoir always seemed to me one of the most intellectually gifted men I have ever met. His memory was extraordinary, and his power of mastering masses of facts and drawing conclusions from them was equally remarkable. His experience of life, drawn from the observation of persons and events in Europe, was ever at hand to form his judgment. It was this happy faculty of recalling pictures of events in bygone times and in far-off countries which gave his conversation its peculiar charm, which all who conversed with him were ready to acknowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NYRB Classics Original Simon Leys is a Renaissance man for the era of globalization. A distinguished scholar of classical Chinese art and literature and one of the first Westerners to recognize the appalling toll of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, Leys also writes with unfailing intelligence, seriousness, and bite about European art, literature, history, and politics and is an unflinching observer of the way we live now. The Hall of Uselessness is the most extensive collection of Leys’s essays to be published to date. In it, he addresses subjects ranging from the Chinese attitude to the past to the mysteries of Belgium and Belgitude; offers portraits of André Gide and Zhou Enlai; takes on Roland Barthes and Christopher Hitchens; broods on the Cambodian genocide; reflects on the spell of the sea; and writes with keen appreciation about writers as different as Victor Hugo, Evelyn Waugh, and Georges Simenon. Throughout, The Hall of Uselessness is marked with the deep knowledge, skeptical intelligence, and passionate conviction that have made Simon Leys one of the most powerful essayists of our time.

There appeared at intervals, during the last few years, several papers of mine on A meri can poets and their art. At the request of some friends, I have made a selection of these Essays from Reviews. The sketches in this little volume, dealing in a general way, with the lives and careers of longfellow, lowell, holmes and whittier, are ln tended as introductions to the writings of the great New England quartette of singers, whose work has done so much to make literature in America, what it is to-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jest and Earnest, Vol. 1 of 2: A Collection of Essays and Reviews In the two sketches or squibs written in 1850 and 1851, after the manner of Herodotus, mirth was made of some statesmen for whom the writer has always felt great respect. This too must be forgiven, if any one should feel hurt after so long time at such freedom of speech; on the principle that where no harm is meant, no offence should be taken, and that, in politics at least, it is only possible to raise a hearty laugh against a very great man. I have not leisure to make them what I should wish them to have been and I have no sub stantial alterations to introduce in the views and statements contained in them. The colouring of each belongs to the time when it was written. Few men, probably, who try to profit by the multiplied and various lessons which years bring with them, would write on any subject in exactly the same way, if they had to write on it again after a con siderable interval; but there is no sufficient reason to change that colouring in some of the earlier Essays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised End: Essays and Reviews, 1942-1962 Rereading my work with that hard objective eye, as though it were the work of someone else, I can now see that too much of what I have had to say over the years has been tied to reviews, sometimes of the most trivial books, and that quite a lot of it has been put negatively. A review-essay form that I used frequently now seems to me to have been a very roundabout way of operating. Its first section would publicly execute a dozen worthless books; its second section would generalize the sad state of affairs in that area; and its third section would propose my beautiful alternative. I have not included these review-essays, except to reprint the third sec tions in two cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Girl of the Period, and Other Social Essays, Vol. 1 of 2 So many false reports followed the appearance of these essays, that I am grateful to the authorities of the Saturday Review for their present permission to republish them under my own name, even though the best of the day has a little gone by, and other forms of folly have been flying about since these were shot at. The essays hit sharply enough at the time, and caused some ill-blood. 'the Girl of the Period' was especially obnoxious to many to whom women were the Sacred Sex above criticism and beyond rebuke; and I had to pay pretty smartly in private life, by those who knew, for what they termed a libel and an untruth. With these passion ate repudiators on the one hand, on the other were some who, trading on the enforced anonymity of the paper, took spurious credit to themselves for the authorship. I was twice introduced to the 'writer of the Girl of the Period. The first time he was a clergyman who had boldly told my friends that he had written the paper; the second, she was a lady of vol. I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peasant Properties, Vol. 1 of 2: And Other Selected Essays The distances for the owners to go to their bits of land are very great. There are few cross-roads, so they must tramp along the grassy muddy paths between the fields to reach their work no trees were to be seen but the occasional rows of hideous black poplars, with branches trimmed up for fuel and to prevent their overshadowing the soil. There was not room for a real tree anywhere in the economy of that world. In Belgium the number of small parcelles is increasing. According to official statistics in 1846 there were 5, 500, 000, and 758, 000 proprietors. Thirty years after, in 1876, the parcelles had increased by about a million, and there were 1, 131, 000 proprietors. It appears as if the petite culture only answered with market gardens near the great towns, which give advantages of good markets and plenty of manure in all countries alike. Here, however, the towns are many and close together. The bits of land were generally the size of a large allotment, about an acre or so (one man will own several of these), and the effect on the naked country is as of a patchwork quilt thrown over it; a small brown patch for the ploughed land, a light green for the mown grass, a dark green for the uncut clover, a yellow one for the corn, and then da capo, over and over again. There seemed a ull level of poverty everywhere; there was not a house as big as an ordinary English farmhouse to be seen, particularly from Brussels to Verviers; everything skimped, cramped, uniform in ugliness and squalid wretchedness. We drank tea in the inner court of the hotel at Brussels, alfresco, with an old French priest, who had come in to see the Belgian Exhibition and was very discontented with affairs at home. 'Gambetta, c'est un farceur, un buveur d'estaminets il ya dix ans; allez, c'est une famuse degringolade pour la France d'etre gouvernee par un homme comme ca.' Nevile bring together a collection of their most influential papers on post-Keynesian thought. Their work stresses the importance of the underlying institutional framework, of the economy as a historical process and, therefore, of path determinacy. In addition, their essays suggest the ultimate goal of economics is as a tool to inform policy and make the world a better place, with better being defined by an overriding concern with social justice. Volume IV explores theory.
