Book Synopsis Thornton and Tully's Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors by : Andrew Hunter
Download or read book Thornton and Tully's Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors written by Andrew Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 25 years since the last edition of Thornton and Tully’s Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors was published, scientific publishing has mushroomed, developed new forms, and the academic discipline and popular appreciation of the history of science have grown apace. This fourth edition discusses these changes and ponders the implications of developments in publishing at the end of the twentieth century, while concentrating its gaze upon the dissemination of scientific ideas and knowledge from Antiquity to the industrial age. In this shift of focus it departs from previous editions, and for the first time a chapter on Islamic science is included. Recurrent themes in several of the ten essays in the present volume are the definition of ’science’ itself, and its transmutation by publishing media and the social context. Two essays on the collecting of scientific books provide a counterpoint, and the book is grounded on a rigorous chapter on bibliographies. The timely publication of Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors comes at the coincidence of the advent of electronic publishing and the millennium, a dramatic moment at which to take stock.
Download or read book Lavoisier written by Jean-Pierre Poirier and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in French in 1993 (Editions Pygmalion/Gerard Watelet, Paris), and expanded and revised for this translation. The founder of modern chemistry, Lavoisier (1743-1794) was active on commisions connected with agriculture, gunpowder, banking, and finance, and was ultimately executed during the Reign of Terror. This biography recounts Lavoisier's scientific accomplishments and his role in the chemical revolution and early history of organic chemistry and physiology; but it is in the examination of his political and economic activities and accomplishments that it breaks new ground. Book Synopsis Matter and Method in the Long Chemical Revolution by : Victor D. Boantza
Download or read book Matter and Method in the Long Chemical Revolution written by Victor D. Boantza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth-century scientific revolution and the eighteenth-century chemical revolution are rarely considered together, either in general histories of science or in more specific surveys of early modern science or chemistry. This tendency arises from the long-held view that the rise of modern physics and the emergence of modern chemistry comprise two distinct and unconnected episodes in the history of science. Although chemistry was deeply transformed during and between both revolutions, the scientific revolution is traditionally associated with the physical and mathematical sciences whereas modern chemistry is seen as the exclusive product of the chemical revolution. This historiographical tension, between similarity in ’form’ and disparity in historical ’content’ of the two events, has tainted the way we understand the rise of modern chemistry as an integral part of the advent of modern science. Against this background, Matter and Method in the Long Chemical Revolution examines the role of and effects on chemistry of both revolutions in parallel, using chemistry during the chemical revolution to illuminate chemistry during the scientific revolution, and vice versa. Focusing on the crises and conflicts of early modern chemistry (and their retrospectively labeled ’losing’ parties), the author traces patterns of continuity in matter theory and experimental method from Boyle to Lavoisier, and reevaluates the disciplinary relationships between chemists, mechanists, and Newtonians in France, England, and Scotland. Adopting a unique approach to the study of the scientific and chemical revolutions, and to early modern chemical thought and practice in particular, the author challenges the standard revolution-centered history of early modern science, and reinterprets the rise of chemistry as an independent discipline in the long eighteenth century.

Download or read book Lavoisier in the Year One: The Birth of a New Science in an Age of Revolution (Great Discoveries) written by Madison Smartt Bell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-12-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fresh…solid…full of suspense and intrigue." —Publishers Weekly Antoine Lavoisier reinvented chemistry, overthrowing the long-established principles of alchemy and inventing an entirely new terminology, one still in use by chemists. Madison Smartt Bell’s enthralling narrative reads like a race to the finish line, as the very circumstances that enabled Lavoisier to secure his reputation as the father of modern chemistry—a considerable fortune and social connections with the likes of Benjamin Franklin—also caused his glory to be cut short by the French Revolution.

Download or read book Rationality written by Tzu-Wei Hung and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rationality: Contexts and Constraints is an interdisciplinary reappraisal of the nature of rationality. In method, it is pluralistic, drawing upon the analytic approaches of philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, and more. These methods guide exploration of the intersection between traditional scholarship and cutting-edge philosophical or scientific research. In this way, the book contributes to development of a suitably revised, comprehensive understanding of rationality, one that befits the 21st century, one that is adequately informed by recent investigations of science, pathology, non-human thought, emotion, and even enigmatic Chinese texts that might previously have seemed to be expressions of irrationalism. - Addresses recent challenges and Identifies a direction for future research on rationality - Investigates the relationship between rationality and mental disorders, such as delusion and depression - Assesses reasoning in artificial intelligence and nonhuman animals - Reflects on ancient Chinese Philosophy and possible cultural differences in human psychology - Employs philosophical reflection, along with linguistic, probabilistic, and logical techniques
