Book Synopsis Le rouge est le noir by : Michael Houseman
Download or read book Le rouge est le noir written by Michael Houseman and published by Presses Universitaires du Mirail. This book was released on 2012 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Ninth Seminar of the IATS, 2000. Volume 9: Territory and Identity in Tibet and the Himalayas by : Katia Buffetrille
Download or read book Proceedings of the Ninth Seminar of the IATS, 2000. Volume 9: Territory and Identity in Tibet and the Himalayas written by Katia Buffetrille and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which places does Tibet include? Are people Tibetan merely because of living in those places? Territory and Identity are notions that are widely present in academic and popular discourses on Tibet. In 1992 a group of French and Austrian researchers who had studied some of the mountain deities and sacred landscapes of Tibet began meeting to discuss the links between territory and identity in Tibetan culture. Eight years later an interdisciplinary group of scholars met in Leiden in Holland to consider these questions in more detail. This book contains some of their findings, based on case studies carried out across the Tibetan and Himalayan regions. The authors look at the role of local deities, kinship, economy, politics and administration using approaches from across the social sciences to try to work out how a community constructs and reconstructs its idea of itself, and how its members think about and are affected by the land on which they were reared.

Book Synopsis Unearthing Bon Treasures by : Dan Martin
Download or read book Unearthing Bon Treasures written by Dan Martin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject for this study, the Tibetan “treasure revealer” Gshen-chen Klu-dga’, is a crucial figure in the development of Bon as an organised religion after the eleventh century. Here for the first time he is situated in the context of what was happening in Buddhism at the time. By scrutinizing his life and gter-ma (“treasures”), that were to be of much controversy in later ages, Dan Martin sheds light on the mechanism of Tibetan polemical tradition and the ways in which sectarianism accords itself legitimacy by resurrecting ancient arguments in a subtly distorted manner. The exhaustive annotated bibliography of previous works about Bon, forming the second part of the work, can rightly be seen as a legacy of Gshen-chen. Both parts taken together make this an indispensable guide to any student of Bon.
Book Synopsis Rituals in Ink by : Alessandro Barchiesi
Download or read book Rituals in Ink written by Alessandro Barchiesi and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to reconstruct ancient rituals we must rely on ancient texts. That is the premise of these eight papers which are taken from a conference held at Stanford University in 2002 which brought together scholars of Roman religion and scholars of Roman literature to debate the `textuality of ritual'. The papers are followed by six brief essays which discuss the themes of the and consider the problems of retrieving ritual from texts written by such complex authors as Virgil, Ovid and Livy. The essays themselves focus on: the theme of sacrificial ritual in Roman poetry; religious communication in Rome; professional poets and the 2nd-century BC temple of Hercules of the muses; Livy; the Aeneid ; Ovid's use of hymns in the Metamorphoses ; Ovid's depiction of a triumph in Tristia ; the secret name of Rome. The numerous extracts are presented in Latin verse and English prose translation.
Book Synopsis Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion by : Clifford Ando
Download or read book Public and Private in Ancient Mediterranean Law and Religion written by Clifford Ando and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public/private distinction is fundamental to modern theories of the family, religion and religious freedom, and state power, yet it has had different salience, and been understood differently, from place to place and time to time. The volume brings together essays from an international array of experts in law and religion, in order to examine the public/private distinction in comparative perspective. The essays focus on the cultures and religions of the ancient Mediterranean, in the formative periods of Greece and Rome and the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Particular attention is given to the private exercise of religion, the relation between public norms and private life, and the division between public and private space and the place of religion therein.
Download or read book Yoga written by David Carpenter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program, largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali, a careful examination of the key elements, overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.
Book Synopsis Picturing the True Form by : Shih-shan Susan Huang
Download or read book Picturing the True Form written by Shih-shan Susan Huang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Picturing the True Form investigates the long-neglected visual culture of Daoism, China’s primary indigenous religion, from the tenth through thirteenth centuries with references to both earlier and later times. In this richly illustrated book, Shih-shan Susan Huang provides a comprehensive mapping of Daoist images in various media, including Dunhuang manuscripts, funerary artifacts, and paintings, as well as other charts, illustrations, and talismans preserved in the fifteenth-century Daoist Canon. True form (zhenxing), the key concept behind Daoist visuality, is not static, but entails an active journey of seeing underlying and secret phenomena. This book’s structure mirrors the two-part Daoist journey from inner to outer. Part I focuses on inner images associated with meditation and visualization practices for self-cultivation and longevity. Part II investigates the visual and material dimensions of Daoist ritual. Interwoven through these discussions is the idea that the inner and outer mirror each other and the boundary demarcating the two is fluid. Huang also reveals three central modes of Daoist symbolism—aniconic, immaterial, and ephemeral—and shows how Daoist image-making goes beyond the traditional dichotomy of text and image to incorporate writings in image design. It is these particular features that distinguish Daoist visual culture from its Buddhist counterpart."
