Book Synopsis Inventing the Recording by : Eva Moreda Rodríguez
Download or read book Inventing the Recording written by Eva Moreda Rodríguez and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the Recording focuses on the decades in which recorded sound went from a technological possibility to a commercial and cultural artefact. Through the analysis of a specific and unique national context, author Eva Moreda Rodríguez tells the stories of institutions and individuals in Spain and discusses the development of discourses and ideas in close connection with national concerns and debates, all while paying close attention to original recordings from this era. The book starts with the arrival in Spain of notices about Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877, followed by the first demonstrations of the invention (1878-1882) by scientists and showmen. These demonstrations greatly stimulated the imagination of scientists, journalists and playwrights, who spent the rest of the 1880s speculating about the phonograph and its potential to revolutionize society once it was properly developed and marketed. The book then moves on to analyse the 'traveling phonographs' and salones fonográficos of the 1890s and early 1900s, with phonographs being paraded around Spain and exhibited in group listening sessions in theatres, private homes and social spaces pertaining to different social classes. Finally, the book covers the development of an indigenous recording industry dominated by the so-called gabinetes fonográficos, small businesses that sold imported phonographs, produced their own recordings, and shaped early discourses about commercial phonography and the record as a commodity between 1896 and 1905.

Book excerpt: Modernism as a literary aesthetic flourished in Hispano-America and Spain for over fifty years (1882-1935). Its surface and inspiration seem alien to us. Yet it was an age remarkably like our own: a time of alarmingly rapid change and uncertainty about the future. Dissatisfaction with a Church that seemed to have turned her back upon science and modern learning was rife among writers, artists and intellectuals. In religion as in other areas of life, the Modernist was an eclectic drawn to those ideas which have been rejected by Judaeo-Christian orthodoxy: the heterodox and the occult. Silva's De sobremesa and the poetry of Dario document the religious pilgrimage of an epoch."

Book Synopsis Afro-Cuban Religious Arts by : Kristine Juncker
Download or read book Afro-Cuban Religious Arts written by Kristine Juncker and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book profiles four generations of women from one Afro-Cuban religious family. From a plantation in Havana Province in the 1890s to a religious center in Spanish Harlem in the 1960s, these women were connected by their prominent roles as leaders in the religions they practiced and the dramatic ritual artwork they created. Each woman was a medium in Espiritismo—communicating with dead ancestors for guidance or insight—and also a santera, or priest of Santería, who could intervene with the oricha pantheon. Kristine Juncker argues that, by creating art for more than one religion, these women shatter the popular assumption that Afro-Caribbean religions are exclusive organizations. Most remarkably, the portraiture, sculptures, and photographs in Afro-Cuban Religious Arts offer rare glimpses into the rituals and iconography of these religions. Santería altars are closely guarded, limited to initiates, and typically destroyed upon the death of the santera, while Espiritismo artifacts are rarely considered valuable enough to pass on. The unique and protean cultural legacy detailed here reveals insights into how ritual art became popular imagery, sparked a wider dialogue about culture inheritance, attracted new practitioners, and enabled the movement to explode internationally.

Book Synopsis El Libro de los Médiums by : Allan Kardec
Download or read book El Libro de los Médiums written by Allan Kardec and published by Editorial Verbum. This book was released on with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book En Lo Invisible written by Léon Denis and published by https://cursoespirita.com. This book was released on with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
