Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in this little book are adapted from some of the great numbers gathered through many years by Dr. Daniel S. Neuman, of Nome. It was Dr. Neuman who painstakingly made the splendid and unequaled collection of Eskimo antiquities and modern implements now on exhibit in the territorial museum at Juneau. The acquiring of this collection for the Territory was one of the writer's husband's last official acts as governor. The writer has endeavored to rewrite these tales for boys and girls in the hope that they may take an interest in that quaint people, living still in the stone age, who, on account of their contact with the so-called civilized races, are gradually vanishing into the past.

By turns tragic and comic, fantastic and earthy, frivolous and profound, this collection transports the reader to the haunting, little-known world of the far North, with all its fragile majesty and power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19 Eskimo, or Inuit, stories in this volume were collected by Dr Daniel Neuman in his travels across Alaska between 1910 and 1921, along with over 3,000 artefacts which now form the Neuman Collection in Juneau Alaska. These stories were extracted from Dr Neuman’s collection, translated and published by Mrs Renee Riggs, wife of then Governor of Alaska Thomas Riggs. More recently governments in Canada and Greenland have ceased using the term "Eskimo" in official documents. Instead, Canada has officially replaced the term "Eskimo" with "Inuit." In recognition of this change, the title of this book has been altered from “Animal Stories from Eskimo-Land” to “Animal Stories from the Land of the Inuit.” These children’s stories are not like your typical Western fairy tale, with a princess in distress being rescued by a Knight in shining armour. Like most Native American children’s tales, these impart a lesson, or a wisdom, to teach Inuit children important life lessons while also being extremely entertaining. These 19 children’s stories are enhanced by 15 colourful headpieces and 7 full page colour plates. The stories in this volume are: The Journey to Eskimo Land Ivango or the Lost Sister The Robin, the Crow and the Fox The Proud Mouse The Crow and the Daylight The Orphan Boy A Race Between a Reindeer and a Tom-Cod Why They Have Summer on St. Lawrence Island The Lost Son The Crow and the Owl The Running Stick The Treacherous Crow and His Cousin, the Mink Good and Bad Weather How the White Whales Happened A Giant and His Drum Lovek and Seranak The Caribou A Fox Story Mi-e-rak-puk =================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Animal Stories from the Land of the Inuit, Tales, children’s stories, children’s books, color illustrations, Eskimo folktales, Eskimo folklore, Eskimo myths, Eskimo Legends, Dr Daniel Neuman, Renee Riggs, Journey to Eskimo Land, Inuit Land, Ivango, Lost Sister, Robin, Crow, Fox, Proud Mouse, Daylight, Orphan Boy, Race, Reindeer, Tom-Cod, fish, Summer, St. Lawrence Island, Lost Son, Crow and the Owl, Running Stick, Treacherous Crow, Cousin, Mink, Good weather, Bad Weather, White Whales Happened, Giant and His Drum, Lovek and Seranak, Caribou, Fox Story, Mi-e-rak-puk, who are you, boy, kaytak, nest, sun, shining, big snow house, good-morning, pour, black oil, bear, track, salmon, mercy, snap, mr. smart fox, caught, at last, Alaska, Canada, Inuit people,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE 53 ESKIMO, OR INUIT, folk tales contained herein were collected in various parts of Greenland, and recorded directly from the lips of the Inuit(Eskimo) story-tellers by Knud Rasmussen [1879 – 1933], a well-known Danish explorer; himself part Inuit/Eskimo. Like most American Indian tales, these 53 stories are unlike any European children's story. There is no Puss in Boots, nor a Cinderella or a Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Instead you will find unique stories and tales that the Inuit used to teach their children the moral lessons of life. These stories were usually told around a campfire with great effect. Tales like: Nukunguasik, Who Escaped From The Tupilak, The Insects That Wooed A Wifeless Man, The Very Obstinate Man, The Dwarfs, The Raven And The Goose, How The Fog Came, The Giant Dog and many more. The constellation of the Great Bear is explained in one story as is the origin of Venus in another. There is a version of the Bluebeard theme in imarasugssuaq, "who, it is said, was wont to eat his wives." Instances of friendship and affection between human beings and animals are found, as in the tale of the Foster-Mother And The Bear. Fairy tales are common in all cultures worldwide. A test of how good they are is easily fulfilled by demands for another, usually by a little-one tugging at your sleeve and coyly begging for “’nutther ple-e-e-se,” and this book has many of these. The 12 grey scale illustrations are by native Inuits (Eskimos) artists are not drawn to illustrate the particular stories, but represent typical scenes such as they are described. As regards their contents, the stories present, more clearly, perhaps, than any objective study, the daily life of the Eskimos of old, their habit of thought, their conception of the universe, and the curious "spirit world" which formed their religion and mythology. In point of form they are refreshingly unique and highly enjoyable. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Eskimo folk tales, Inuit, Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Knud Rasmussen, two friends, travel the world, coming of man, long time ago, nukunguasik, escape, tupilak, qujavarssuk, kunigseq, bear, foster-son, ímarasugssuaq, qalaganguase, land of ghosts, isigaligarssik, woo wifeless man, obstinate man, dwarfs, dwarves, bottom of the sea, frighten people, raven and the goose, when the ravens could speak, makíte, asaloq, ukaleq, íkardlítuarssuk, raven wanted a wife, vixen for a wife, great bear, star, woman with an iron tail, fog came, avenge the widows, search for a son, atungait, wandering, kumagdlak, living arrows, giant dog, inland-dwellers, etah, stab, soul, bodies of beasts, papik, patussorssuaq, artuk, forbidden things, thunder spirits, nerrivik, kagssagssuk, homeless boy, strong man, qasiagssaq, great liar, eagle, whale, two outcasts, atdlarneq, great glutton, angangŭjuk, atarssuaq, puagssuaq, tungujuluk, saunikoq, anarteq, guillemot, kanagssuaq, metis flag, angmagssalik, hunter in kayak, sarqiserasak, spirit flight, bow and arrow, half dog, half human, evil spirit, helping spirit, flying race, angiut,

Book excerpt: During the long cold winter nights, Inuit families snuggled together in their winter houses and listened to tales about a time when unbelievable things could happen. These adventurers broke up the long hours of winter darkness and gave the listeners a cultural and traditional heritage. Each chapter is followed by a Question and Answer section which covers themes, symbols, and characters; and an Expert Commentary section, which makes for great discussion. This book is developed from INUIT MYTHOLOGY to allow republication of the original text into ebook, paperback, and trade editions.
