Book Synopsis Greek Tragedy in 20th-Century Italian Literature by : Caterina Paoli
Download or read book Greek Tragedy in 20th-Century Italian Literature written by Caterina Paoli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the works of Camillo Sbarbaro and Giovanna Bemporad, this book offers the first in-depth analysis of poetic translations of Greek tragedy in 20th-century Italian poetry. The close examination of the linguistic and ideological diversity embedded in these authors' works shows how narratives of Greek tragedy shaped their poetic universe, and how their work influenced the Greek paradigm in return. The reader is presented with a textual analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's translations, as well as a discussion of larger cultural patterns. This volume provides a fresh perspective on the pedagogical commitment of the Italian poets and their roles as translators of classical studies. The web of relationships and historical context in which these authors are placed provide an understanding of their importance for a wider discourse on translation in Italy and Europe in the 1940s. Caterina Paoli's original analysis of Sbarbaro's and Bemporad's poetic translations and her emphasis on their relevance for translation studies, women's writing and classical reception, fills a significant gap in current scholarship on the translation of ancient literature in the Italian poetic community.

Book Synopsis The Length of the Prologue of Aeschylus’s Choephori by : Andrew Lyon Brown
Download or read book The Length of the Prologue of Aeschylus’s Choephori written by Andrew Lyon Brown and published by Skenè. Texts and Studies. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequence of 12 pages was torn at an early date from the one medieval manuscript (known as M) on which our knowledge of Aeschylus’s Choephori (Libation Bearers) depends. This sequence contained the end of the previous play Agamemnon, which is preserved in three later manuscripts, and the beginning of the Prologue of Choephori. The current study seeks to determine as accurately as possible the number of missing lines, taking into account the length of the pages in a particular quire of M and the space that would have been occupied by the last part of Agamemnon and by any material occurring between the texts of the two plays. From all this it is calculated that the number of lines of Choephori missing from M was probably in the range 36 to 53 and very probably in the range 32 to 55. Even the lowest of these figures is higher than previous estimates. The study concludes by considering what the missing portion could have contained. Some fragments are quoted by other authors and these may have been clustered at the beginning of the Prologue, but it is possible to imagine plenty of material that could have occupied the gap between the last of these fragments and the first surviving line in M.

Book Synopsis Allusion, Authority, and Truth by : Phillip Mitsis
Download or read book Allusion, Authority, and Truth written by Phillip Mitsis and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions about how ancient Greek texts establish their authority, reflect on each other, and project their own truths have become central for a wide range of recent critical discourses. In this volume, an influential group of international scholars examines these themes in a variety of poetic and rhetorical genres. The result is a series of striking and original readings from different critical perspectives that display the centrality of these questions for understanding the poetic and rhetorical aims of ancient Greek texts. Characterized by a combination of close attention to philological detail and theoretical sophistication, the essays in this volume make a compelling case for this kind of focused, critically informed dialogue about the nature of ancient textual praxis. Students of classical literature will find a wealth of critical insights and challenging new readings of many familiar texts.
Book Synopsis The Play of Words by : Giulia Maria Chesi
Download or read book The Play of Words written by Giulia Maria Chesi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The play of words" examines the dynamics of interfamilial violence in the Oresteia. It argues that the key element of the play's discourse about violence is to be found in the inquiry for a definition of Clytemnestra's motherhood. The failure of this research challenges the reader with some open questions: who is Clytemnestra? Where is justice if a mother dies? By reading the play's narrative on interfamilial violence and matricide as a narrative of uncertainties in terms of the role of the mother figure, this book illustrates the complexity of the maternal role of Clytemnestra. It also breaks silence among scholars, who have generally portrayed Clytemnestra as the bad mother who kills the children's father and as the bad wife who betrays her husband.
Download or read book Greek Memories written by Luca Castagnoli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Memories aims to identify and examine the central concepts underlying the theories and practices of memory in the Greek world, from the archaic period to Late Antiquity, across all the main literary genres, and to trace some fundamental changes in these theories and practices. It explores the interaction and development of different 'disciplinary' approaches to memory in Ancient Greece, which will enable a fuller and deeper understanding of the whole phenomenon, and of its specific manifestations. This collection of papers contributes to enriching the current scholarly discussion by refocusing it on the question of how various theories and practices of memory, recollection, and forgetting play themselves out in specific texts and authors from Ancient Greece, within a wide chronological span (from the Homeric poems to Plotinus), and across a broad range of genres and disciplines (epic and lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, historiography, philosophy and scientific prose treatises).

Book Synopsis The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation by : Francis Cairns
Download or read book The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation written by Francis Cairns and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation assembles and studies for the first time the numerous poetic invitations and summonses of Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece. These poems and passages come from epic, lyric, dramatic, epigrammatic, and epigraphic sources. Most of them are by celebrated Greek poets ― Homer, Sappho, Alcaeus, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Theocritus, Callimachus, Apollonius, among others. Analysis of this poetic corpus associates it with the ‘kletikon’, an ancient rhetorical genre of content, and reveals everywhere in it the commonplaces of that genre, thus allowing new sub-types of the kletikon to be discovered, and the development of the genre over the centuries to be charted. When individual invitations and summonses are viewed against this generic background, their originality and merits emerge along with their poets’ unique voices. Each summons and invitation is presented, translated, discussed in detail, and, when part of a longer work, linked to its context. This volume is directed to scholars and students of Classics; scholars of the Latin equivalent genre, the ‘vocatio’, which persisted into the Renaissance, can also find in it an intellectual model.
