My father was a preacher and a jack of all trades. He was an inventor and entrepreneur. He could not look at an empty building without wanting to start a church or a business in it. Life with him was an education, and growing up as the youngest of twelve children set the stage for lots of fun and experiences. Although I did not set out to write a life story, I suppose this is kind of what it is. It seems I have spent most of my adult life trying to get free from the hypocrisy and man-made rules of organized religion and denominations. I consider myself predenominational. I endeavor to base my beliefs and my life on the teachings of Jesus and the early church. It has been a great struggle to Escape from Religiosity.

It details how philosophy, theology & psychology have been twisted & subverted to draw believers away from, instead of closer to, God.

Why would a person need this guide? Because the unfortunate reality is that many individuals find themselves involved with religions that they no longer support, yet they are fearful to leave. Do you follow a religion whose teachings you no longer believe in? Are you compelled by fear and insecurity over the prospect of leaving your religion? Do you feel guilty or worthless because you do not measure up to the expectations of your religion? "How to Escape Religion Guilt Free" will help you through the process of leaving your religion and will empower you with the desire and courage to continue your spiritual quest. It takes a frank, hard look at the psychological tools that religions use to keep disciples bound to the faith, and it outlines the steps a person will need to go through to retake control of their life.

Book excerpt: A fast-paced and provocative story told in a humorous voice. Jason is raised in a deeply religious town in Amish country, Pennsylvania. At a young age he finds he is different than the other children at public school and he is to be no part of their world. Despite being isolated from possible friendships he finds himself in precarious situations as he is sent to preach to those same people's doorsteps. As he struggles to come of age under the veil of a enormously strict cult, curiosity pulls him farther away from blind faith in the Jehovah's Witness religion called "The Truth" which creates a turmoil that sends him running away from home before adulthood. Jason loses his family but gains new friends in the forbidden world, along with experiences that lead him across several United States to experience drugs, sex and punk rock. A lifetime of experience in thirty years, this journey will teach a lesson fit for modern times of how truly damaging religion can be... and theorize what it all means.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The dramatic true story of one woman’s life inside the ultra-fundamentalist American religious sect featured in Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey—and her courageous flight to freedom with her eight children With a new epilogue by the author • “Escape provides an astonishing look behind the tightly drawn curtains of the FLDS church, one of the most secretive religious groups in the United States. A courageous, heart-wrenching account.”—Jon Krakauer When she was eighteen years old, Carolyn Jessop was coerced into an arranged marriage with a total stranger: a man thirty-two years her senior. Merril Jessop already had three wives. But arranged plural marriages were an integral part of Carolyn’s heritage: She was born into and raised in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), the radical offshoot of the Mormon Church. Over the next fifteen years, Carolyn had eight children and withstood her husband’s psychological abuse and the watchful eyes of his other wives, who were locked in a constant battle for supremacy. Carolyn was miserable for years and wanted out, but she knew that if she tried to leave and got caught, her children would be taken away from her. In 2003, Carolyn chose freedom over fear and fled her home with her eight children. She had $20 to her name. Escape exposes a world tantamount to a prison camp, created by religious fanatics who, in the name of God, deprive the followers the right to make choices, brainwash children in church-run schools, and force women to be totally subservient to men. Against this background, Carolyn’s flight takes on an extraordinary, inspiring power. Not only did Carolyn manage a daring escape from a brutal environment, she became the first woman ever granted full custody of her children in a contested suit involving the FLDS. And in 2006, her reports to the Utah attorney general on church abuses formed a crucial part of the case that led to the arrest, and later the conviction and sentence, of their notorious leader, Warren Jeffs.

Yet despite our obsession with the emotive and the experiential, we still face anxiety, despair, and purposelessness. Tracing trends in twentieth century thought, Francis A. Schaeffer shows that Christianity offers meaning where there is purposelessness and hope where there is despair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians are painfully codependent, and never get free. A codependent lifestyle is a miserable, fearful life. From never feeling secure, to the need to always be in control, the extremes of codependency fuel the chaos and pain in our lives. In Escape from Codependent Christianity, Dr. James B. Richards examines this common phenomenon in light of the truth of Scripture. Codependency is not complicated. It involves depending upon others for what we have no right to expect from them. Codependents often fall into the trap of living on other people's approval for their own sense of self-worth. They may depend on others for decisions or happiness. No matter what the needs are, the key to codependency involves trying to get from others what people cannot truly give.

Book excerpt: Religion has left an undeniable mark in our world. Some see it as the answer to every problem, while others see it as the problem itself. Simply put, religion is the single greatest force in history. But in a much more intimate sense, what does religion mean to one life? In this honest, suspenseful, and moving memoir, author David Nasser tells of a life filled with heartbreak and healing. Forced to escape from a country gripped in a religious revolution, David and his family run for their lives in an attempt to find refuge. Through the lens of a terrified boy we see the destructive power of religion and the pull of peer pressure as he tries to fit into a new culture. Nasser's raw and transparent account of his transition from hating religion to having a living faith in Christ will impact readers from across the religious spectrum. His unflinchingly honest, yet humorous, assessment of the church from an outsider's point of view will both enlighten readers and spur them to renewed and refined outreach. For anyone who has seen the lie of religion, whether in Iran or Alabama or anywhere in between, Nasser offers the truth of Jesus.

Book excerpt: Christianity Today "Beautiful Orthodoxy" Book of the Year in 2016. Keep Christianity Strange. As the culture changes all around us, it is no longer possible to pretend that we are a Moral Majority. That may be bad news for America, but it can be good news for the church. What's needed now, in shifting times, is neither a doubling-down on the status quo nor a pullback into isolation. Instead, we need a church that speaks to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As Christianity seems increasingly strange, and even subversive, to our culture, we have the opportunity to reclaim the freakishness of the gospel, which is what gives it its power in the first place. We seek the kingdom of God, before everything else. We connect that kingdom agenda to the culture around us, both by speaking it to the world and by showing it in our churches. As we do so, we remember our mission to oppose demons, not to demonize opponents. As we advocate for human dignity, for religious liberty, for family stability, let's do so as those with a prophetic word that turns everything upside down. The signs of the times tell us we are in for days our parents and grandparents never knew. But that's no call for panic or surrender or outrage. Jesus is alive. Let's act like it. Let's follow him, onward to the future.

Book excerpt: Mark Hosler followed Elroy Godfrey, a man thought to be anointed by the Holy Spirit. Surrounded by supposed Christians and reeling from a budding romance, Mark felt certain he had found his Garden of Eden at last. Pastor Elroy Godfrey, The charismatic leader of a religious cult, captivated Mark, and he readily accepted his new spirituality. But after thirteen years of living sequestered from the real world, Mark could not ignore the 'red flags' warning him that evil was lurking in his pastor's heart. Shackles of Faith is the self-written, true-life account of Mark Hosler, a middle-aged man excommunicated from a religious cult for questioning his pastor's ways. Mark's story exposes the tragedy of an innocent man who lost his wife and son, his home, job, and all the dreams he had for his future. Shackles of Faith is a story offering hope to those who may have been, or may currently be, a victim of a cult. It is a story that must be told.
