Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scientists and researchers aren’t prepared to talk to the press or to policymakers—or to deal with backlash. Many researchers have the horror stories to prove it. What’s clear, according to Nancy Baron, is that scientists, journalists and public policymakers come from different cultures. They follow different sets of rules, pursue different goals, and speak their own language. To effectively reach journalists and public officials, scientists need to learn new skills and rules of engagement. No matter what your specialty, the keys to success are clear thinking, knowing what you want to say, understanding your audience, and using everyday language to get your main points across. In this practical and entertaining guide to communicating science, Baron explains how to engage your audience and explain why a particular finding matters. She explores how to ace your interview, promote a paper, enter the political fray, and use new media to connect with your audience. The book includes advice from journalists, decision makers, new media experts, bloggers and some of the thousands of scientists who have participated in her communication workshops. Many of the researchers she has worked with have gone on to become well-known spokespeople for science-related issues. Baron and her protégées describe the risks and rewards of “speaking up,” how to deal with criticism, and the link between communications and leadership. The final chapter, ‘Leading the Way’ offers guidance to scientists who want to become agents of change and make your science matter. Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned veteran looking to hone your skills, Escape From the Ivory Tower can help make your science understood, appreciated and perhaps acted upon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harrowing, triumphant true story of an antiquated light cruiser and its crew suddenly under fire in the Pacific as WWII erupted: “An engrossing tale.” —Naval Historical Foundation The old light cruiser Marblehead was living out her final years of naval service as a member of the United States Asiatic Fleet in 1941. The small group of mostly antiquated ships based in the Philippines sailed the waters of East Asia to show the American flag in places like China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. Then the sudden eruption of World War II in the Pacific put the warship on the front lines of the conflict as Imperial Japan unleased a series of devastating attacks across the region. On the morning of February 4, 1942, the warship was surprised by Japanese planes northeast of Java. Two large bombs slammed into Marblehead, causing fires and casualties and knocking out her steering gear. A third bomb exploded close by underwater. The near miss ripped a large gash into her hull, allowing a torrent of water to rush inside the ship. Escape from Java takes us throughout the ship as the story unfolds—next to gunners toiling to keep their guns firing, with medical staff tending to the wounded, and alongside damage control sailors working in flooded compartments. The Japanese confidently radioed that they had sunk the ship—but through courage, sacrifice, and superhuman effort, Marblehead would set out on a harrowing 13,000-mile journey back to the US . . . “An engrossing tale of an obsolescent ship’s survival amid great odds set against the brutal early fighting of the Pacific War. This book will appeal to a wide audience not only as high wartime adventure but simply as a story of gritty perseverance when the odds are heavily against.” —Naval Historical Foundation

Not long after, wind ripped giant white rubber sheets off the roof and sent huge shards of debris flying toward Uptown. Rivulets of rainwater began finding their way down through the ceiling, dripping and pouring into the stands, the mezzanine, and the football field. Without ventilation, the air began to get gamy with the smell of sweat and garbage. The bathrooms stopped working. Many people slept; others waited, mostly in silence.

Book excerpt: Fearing is a central part of how we relate to each other and the unpredictable world. Fearing badly is a key part of many of our moral failures and fearing better a central part of our moral repair. We might think that fearing is undesirable and should be avoided whenever possible, but, as Ami Harbin argues, avoiding fear causes some of our greatest threats. Fearing well is at the core of what it means to be responsible. By understanding fear as a relational practice, we can see that our relationships with other fearers shape what we fear, what fear feels like, how we identify and understand our fears, and how we cope with them. Bringing insights from philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, political theory, and mindfulness research, Harbin guides readers in coming to grips with what kind of fearers we want to be and become and what we owe each other when facing what we cannot control. Grounded in real-life cases that will be of interest to many readers--policing, prisons, pandemic, vaccination, borders, migration, parenting, gender, sexuality, health care systems, and more--this text addresses the moral quandaries and complexities of the ethics of fearing together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography Of Grell Ferdinand God must be given well deserved thanks for protecting and sustaining me throughout my existence. My birth in a small country village in Erin, Trinidad, was a miracle from what I heard. I was told that there were complications, and I was given the name Grell, in deference to a Dr. Grell, who was instrumental in my safe delivery. My Christian parents, made great sacrifices to have us educated in a Christian environment. They left Erin and set up home in Maracas Valley, in North Trinidad, where we had the benefit of living near to Christian institutions. My first degree, a B.A. (General Hons.) in History and Spanish was earned at University of the West Indies, Trinidad. For my Master's degree, my immediate family emigrated to the U.S.A. and I studied at Florida Atlantic University. I did my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. I currently teach as I have been doing for most of my adult life, having taught in Trinidad, St Croix, New Jersey, New York and Florida. I did my Chaplaincy training at the International Chaplaincy Association, in south Florida, and also work as an assistant pastor in two different churches. My goal is to help spread the gospel through a T.V. ministry. I am seeking the Lord to use me with Divine interventions to help bring relief to the sick, to cast out demons and effect the opening of sight to the blind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about the Battle of Britain, the air war over France and the Low Countries from September 1939 to June 1940 has been largely neglected – until now. As expert aviation author Jerry Murland reveals in this fascinating book, there may have been little ground action until May 1940 but the war in the air was far from ‘phoney’. In contrast to their adversaries, the Allied air forces on the mainland of Europe were poorly equipped, regardless of increased development from 1934 onwards. But in spite of this, when the German invasion began, the Low Countries of Holland and Belgium fought back tenaciously. While development of the Spitfire, Blenheim and Wellington was continuing at a pace, the RAF with only four squadrons of Hurricanes among a force of outdated bi-planes, was a little more prepared than the French, but still woefully outgunned by the Luftwaffe. While the Allied air forces of Britain, France and the Low Countries may have been inferior, the gallantry and tenacity of their pilots makes for inspiring reading. This is a work that will enthral and inform all those interested in the history of the Second World War, particularly aviation enthusiasts.

Book excerpt: Fall of the Angels focuses on a biblical tradition whose significance has been recognised, elaborated and explored in literature and art outside the Bible. Its extensive influence on religion and culture during the last two millenia is reflected in the wide variety of interpretations of this tradition among communities as they came to terms with religious identity in the face of opposition.
