Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the fourteenth century, Christian control of the Iberian Peninsula extended to the borders of the emirate of Granada, whose Muslim rulers acknowledged Castilian suzerainty. No longer threatened by Moroccan incursions, the kings of Castile were diverted from completing the Reconquest by civil war and conflicts with neighboring Christian kings. Mindful, however, of their traditional goal of recovering lands formerly ruled by the Visigoths, whose heirs they claimed to be, the Castilian monarchs continued intermittently to assault Granada until the late fifteenth century. Matters changed thereafter, when Fernando and Isabel launched a decade-long effort to subjugate Granada. Utilizing artillery and expending vast sums of money, they methodically conquered each Naṣrid stronghold until the capitulation of the city of Granada itself in 1492. Effective military and naval organization and access to a diversity of financial resources, joined with papal crusading benefits, facilitated the final conquest. Throughout, the Naṣrids had emphasized the urgency of a jihād waged against the Christian infidels, while the Castilians affirmed that the expulsion of the "enemies of our Catholic faith" was a necessary, just, and holy cause. The fundamentally religious character of this last stage of conflict cannot be doubted, Joseph F. O'Callaghan argues.

Download or read book The Greatest Man Uncrowned written by Nicholas Grenville Round and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 1986 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvaro de Luna was for almost forty years Juan II of Castile's closest friend, and for the greater part of that time his chief minister. Working ceaselessly to consolidate Juan's position, achieved through his great-grandfather's murder of his half-brother king Pedro, he had initially to establish a power base and, in the years preceding his eventual downfall, to maintain it against the constant restlessness of the Spanish nobility. Only in the middle years can he be seen to have given Spain a fiscal regime, an enterprising recruitment policy for the public services, and a coherent ideology. This study of the violent and enigmatic circumstances in which his career came to an end makes a valuable contribution to understanding 15th-century Castilian history.

Book Synopsis Culture and Society in Medieval Galicia by :
Download or read book Culture and Society in Medieval Galicia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 1121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Culture and Society in Medieval Galicia, twenty-three international authors examine Galicia’s changing place in Iberia, Europe, and the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds from late antiquity through the thirteenth century. With articles on art and architecture; religion and the church; law and society; politics and historiography; language and literature; and learning and textual culture, the authors introduce medieval Galicia and current research on the region to medievalists, Hispanists, and students of regional culture and society. The cult of St. James, Santiago Cathedral, and the pilgrimage to Compostela are highlighted and contextualized to show how Galicia’s remoteness became the basis for a paradoxical centrality in medieval art, culture, and religion. Contributors are Jeffrey A. Bowman, Manuel Castiñeiras, James D'Emilio, Thomas Deswarte, Pablo C. Díaz, Emma Falque, Amélia P. Hutchinson, Amancio Isla, Henrik Karge, Melissa R. Katz, Michael Kulikowski, Fernando López Sánchez, Luis R. Menéndez Bueyes, William D. Book Synopsis Global History, Visual Culture and Itinerancies by : Francisco José Díaz Marcilla
Download or read book Global History, Visual Culture and Itinerancies written by Francisco José Díaz Marcilla and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National studies have demonstrated their inability to correctly understand global phenomena, and the way in which they affect societies. This chronologically ambitious book investigates methodological and theoretical issues from Roman times to the present, in terms of globalization. In this context, one of the most relevant parameters of change emerges: the itinerancy of culture and knowledge. Therefore, this volume argues that itinerant agents carry with them cultural baggage, transporting and transmitting it to other spaces. In this way, interconnection begins, producing active changes in global history and visual culture. Contributions to this book focus on comparative studies, the evolution of global phenomena, historical processes in their diachrony, regional studies, changing economies, cultural continuities, and methodological questions on globalization, among others. In addition, the book opens with a contribution from Professor Peter Burke.

Book Synopsis Reconciliation and Resistance in Early Modern Spain by : Teresa Tinsley
Download or read book Reconciliation and Resistance in Early Modern Spain written by Teresa Tinsley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an original perspective on the emergence of early modern Spain from multi-faith Iberia. It uses the eventful career of Hernando de Baeza – an interpreter, intermediary, and author positioned at the intersection of the so-called 'three cultures' of medieval Iberia (Judaism, Islam and Christianity) – as a thread to connect the conflicts, controversies and preoccupations of an age in which Christianising the whole world seemed an attainable dream. Teresa Tinsley draws on a wealth of extensive archival evidence, together with Baeza's own memoir on the downfall of Muslim Granada (translated here for the first time), to demonstrate the widespread resistance to the authoritarian and exclusionary Christianity which would come to be associated with Spain, the Inquisition, and the Catholic Monarchs of the period. In the process, Tinsley provides a nuanced alternative account of the tensions, compromises and competing interests which underlay Spain's emergence as a world power.
