Book excerpt: Red blood cells constitute approximately 40% of the total amount of blood and 99% of shaped elements of blood. Their major function is oxygen transportation and this makes erythrocytes "the basis of life." However, as readers will see in this book, erythrocytes have a lot of different, important functions in our body. With this book, it is planned to collect current information related to "erythrocytes." The book has been divided into two sections. The first section includes information about the roles of erythrocytes in the physiological and pathophysiological processes. The second section includes information on the future perspectives of erythrocytes like their therapeutic applications in medicine. This book will be a stepping stone for scientists who are rapidly advancing their science journey.

Book excerpt: The sixth meeting on the use of resealed annealed red blood cells was held in Irsee, Germany by the International Society for the Use of Resealed Erythrocytes (ISURE) on July 25-28, 1996. Although earlier meetings focused on the technology toward develop ment of methods and standardization for efficient, consistent encapsulation, most of the present studies now are directed toward the application use of these carrier blood cells. Basic studies now have been directed toward exploration of commercial applications. In deed, clinical trials were initiated to evaluate the dose-response curves employing L asparagenase in human patients. Also, studies have shown the use of thrombolytic agent in erythrocyte carriers with the use of human red blood cells to provide a new conceptual ap proach in thrombolytic therapy to prevent thrombosis in individuals with higher risk fac tors. For example, with the use of carrier red blood cells, the thrombolytic agents will have a greater potential of acting on clot formation without systemic activation and thus lower the risk of hemorrhage, which is always prevalent in the thrombolytic therapy.

Book excerpt: In addition to carrying haemoglobin for gas exchange, red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes contain a number of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, making them capable of acting as peripheral biomarkers for many pathological conditions. Early identification of key changes in erythrocytes in response to inflammatory or infectious diseases saves millions of lives worldwide. As such, this book examines the role of RBCs in immunology. Chapters cover such topics as an iron deficiency in erythrocytes, the modulation of oxidative stress (OS) in erythrocytes in bacterial and viral infections, using human foetal astrocytes (HFAs) as an experimental model to measure early predictive biomarkers for hypertension, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the respiratory function of vertebrate red cells. I have defined the phrase "respiratory function" broadly to include, in addition to the actual oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, erythropoiesis, haemoglobin synthesis, red cell structure, the deformability of red cells in circulation, ion and substrate transport across the cell membrane, cellular metabolism, and control of cellular volume and pH. All of these aspects of the red cell function may affect gas transport between the respiratory epithelia and the tissues. Throughout the book, I have tried to relate our current knowledge about the nucleated red cell function to the wealth of information about the function of mammalian red cells. However, whenever possible, I have placed the emphasis on the nucleated red cell function for two reasons. First, the erythro cytes of 90% of vertebrate species are nucleated, and, second, nucleated red cell function has not been reviewed earlier in a single volume. This being the case, I have tried to make the reference list as complete as I could with regard to nucleated red cells. I hope that the approach adopted is useful for both com parative and human physiologists. Many people have contributed to the making of this book directly or in directly. Antti Soivio started me in this field. Prof. Henrik Wallgren has always encouraged fresh scientific ideas in his department. My present ideas of red cell function have been influenced by work carried out with Prof. Roy E.

Book excerpt: There is an urgent need to uncover new therapies that will protect against malaria, as the parasite becomes increasingly resistant to available drugs and this book offers insights into three interrelated aspects of the malaria-infected erythrocyte: * The transport of solutes into and out of the infected cell and the use of specific trafficking pathways in drug targeting * The traffic of proteins produced by the intracellular parasite as an essential process for the biogenesis of transport systems. * The relationship between the transport of drugs into the infected cell and the mode of drug action and drug resistance.
