In einem Land, in welchem durch jahrzehntelange Migration vor allem durch die sogenannten Gastarbeiter, das demografische Bild so stark geprägt worden ist und vor allem in Anbetracht der Tatsache der seit Jahren anhaltenden Rückläufigkeit der Geburtenraten der deutschen Population, erhält die Bildungssituation von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund eine umso größere Bedeutung. Sowohl für die deutsche Wirtschaft als auch für die Gesellschaft stellt diese Gruppe eine enorm wichtige Ressource dar, die es zu nutzen und unterstützen gilt (vgl. Allemann-Ghionda, 2008:27). Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Bildungssituation von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund in Deutschland. Das dieser Einleitung vorangestellte Zitat von Gogolin macht deutlich, was sowohl in erziehungswissenschaftlichen als auch in öffentlichen Diskursen schon seit längerem bekannt ist: das deutsche Bildungssystem schafft es trotz mehreren Jahrzehnten nicht, sich auf die migrationsbedingte Heterogenität seiner Schülerschaft einzustellen und dieser gerecht zu werden. Statistiken und Studien belegen, dass in Deutschland Schüler mit Migrationshintergrund in vielen sozialen Bereichen benachteiligt sind, sodass Schulerfolg und höhere Bildungsabschlüsse oft ausbleiben. Insbesondere Schüler mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund weisen dabei hohe Leistungsdefizite auf. Die Forschungsfrage, welcher in der vorliegenden Arbeit demnach nachgegangen werden soll, behandelt die Frage, welche Faktoren den Bildungserfolg von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund in Deutschland bestimmen und welche Rolle dabei die Mehrsprachigkeit dieser Gruppe spielt. Um die Ursachen und Gründe dieser Problematik zu untersuchen, soll die These aufgestellt werden, dass bei türkischstämmigen Schülern eine Kombination von verschiedenen Faktoren zu ungünstigeren Bedingungen im Schulsystem führt. Im Gegenzug funktioniert das Bildungssystem in Deutschland durch seine vorherrschenden Strukturen so, dass Schüler mit türkischem Migrationshintergrund zurückbleiben und benachteiligt werden.

Book excerpt: Research literature concerning the effects of incorporating the heritage languages of minority students into the regular school curriculum either as subjects or as mediums of instruction is reviewed. Program evaluations from Canada, the United States, and Europe consistently show that the use of a minority language as a medium of instruction for all or part of the school day entails no long-term loss in the development of academic skills in the majority language. There is also evidence that bilingual programs can both encourage minority parent involvement in their children's schooling and facilitate the development of minority students' academic skills. However, this pattern does not invariably emerge in the evaluation data, and further research is required to understand fully the complex interactions that appear to exist between language of instruction and a range of individual, educational, and social factors. Virtually no research data are available on the academic effects of teaching heritage languages as subjects, as opposed to using the languages as a medium of instruction. Also, because most program evaluations focus primarily on academic outcomes, little or no data are available on the impact of bilingual or heritage language programs on the educational system as a whole. Indeed, the mismatch between the idealized hopes of the returning migrants and the high expectations for social integration by the new host country results in particular difficulties of adaptation for this group of immigrants, often with high societal costs. This interdisciplinary, comparative volume examines migration from German and Jewish Diasporas to Germany and Israel, examining the roles of origin, ethnicity, and destination in the acculturation and adaptation of immigrants. The book presents results from various projects within a large research consortium that compared the adaptation of Diaspora immigrants with that of other immigrant groups and natives in Israel and Germany.
