Book Synopsis Erratic Expressions by : Derek Cross
Download or read book Erratic Expressions written by Derek Cross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a poetic odyssey through expression, trauma, desire, and self-discovery. Erratic Expressions is a contemplation of how creativity and the arts can be used as a medium for self-expression, connection, and eventual self-actualization. In this poetic tour de force, the author begins with an explicit invitation to actively engage with his contemplations and, by extension, the author himself. Through the journey, the poems take a turn to a near hopeless acceptance that things may never change. Yet, despite all the fear, trauma, and self-hatred, the work coalesces into a cathartic resolution of healing and an authentic revelation of self, during which the author writes directly to the audience, his own mind, and various muses and personifications of his desire and demons, all the while confronting the dichotomy of wanting to directly connect with people but being unable to do so without the veil of poetry.
Book Synopsis The Value of Aesthetics by : Alanna Cant
Download or read book The Value of Aesthetics written by Alanna Cant and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many other handicrafts in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which have long cultural and historical trajectories, Oaxacan woodcarving began in the second half of the twentieth century and has always been done for the commercial market. In The Value of Aesthetics, Alanna Cant explores how one family’s workshop in the village of San Martín Tilcajete has become the most critically and economically successful, surpassing those of neighbors who use similar materials and techniques. The dominance of this family is tied to their ability to produce a new aesthetic that appeals to three key “economies of culture”: the tourist market for souvenirs, the national market for traditional Mexican artesanías, and the international market for indigenous art. Offering a new analytical model by which anthropologists can approach visual aesthetics and conceptualize the power of artworks as socially active objects, The Value of Aesthetics shows how aesthetic practices produce and redefine social and political relationships. By investigating the links between aesthetics and issues of production, authorship, ownership, and identity, Cant shows aesthetic change to be a process that ultimately repackages everyday life into commodified objects in Oaxaca.

Book Synopsis Toward a Definition of Antisemitism by : Gavin I. Langmuir
Download or read book Toward a Definition of Antisemitism written by Gavin I. Langmuir and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-02 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward a Definition of Antisemitism offers new contributions by Gavin I. Langmuir to the history of antisemitism, together with some that have been published separately. The collection makes Langmuir's innovative work on the subject available to scholars in medieval and Jewish history and religious studies. The underlying question that unites the book is: what is antisemitism, where and when did it emerge, and why? After two chapters that highlight the failure of historians until recently to depict Jews and attitudes toward them fairly, the majority of the chapters are historical studies of crucial developments in the legal status of Jews and in beliefs about them during the Middle Ages. Two concluding chapters provide an overview. In the first, the author summarizes the historical developments, indicating concretely when and where antisemitism as he defines it emerged. In the second, Langmuir criticizes recent theories about prejudice and racism and develops his own general theory about the nature and dynamics of antisemitism.
