Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The erosion of gun tubes is a very complex interdisciplinary problem involving several branches of engineering and science. Several mechanisms are responsible for this limitation to gun tube life, some of which are of thermal origin, some are mechanical and some chemical. The exact combination of these mechanisms will depend upon the following components of the gun system. (1) The gun barrel system; (2) The projectile system; (3) The charge assembly; (4) Wear reducing additives in the propellant; (5) Firing conditions. After reviewing the history of gun barrel erosion from these several points of view, possible mechanisms are discussed. Several other fields of engineering endeavors that are limited by severe wear problems are reviewed for possible sources of technology transfer. The report concludes by suggesting long and short range programs, including a number of specific ideas that should be evaluated.

Book excerpt: Confronted with problems associated with the continual upgrading of field guns, reducing the number of different items in supply and lowering overall costs, the Department of the Army has need for improved methods of reducing erosion and extending the wear life of long range cannon. The National Materials Advisory Board was asked to consider all facets of this need and to make recommendations. Erosion in Large Gun Barrels assesses the nature of the bore erosion problem; identifies fruitful areas of research; assesses the state of technology of materials and methods in areas which may become significant to gun tubes of improved performance; and suggests experimental techniques, devices, and instruments and methods of reducing data to enhance the continuing coordination of the activities of the three Services.

Book excerpt: Gun tube erosion can be defined as the bore surface damage and bore enlargement caused by firing, which can lead to loss in accuracy and the effectiveness of the weapon. It is one of the two major factors on the basis of which gun tubes are condemned; the other factor being fatigue life, Erosion is a complex phenomenon resulting from the interaction of propellant gases and the projectile with the surface of the bore. The bore surface is exposed for a short time to temperature approaching the melting point of steel, pressures as high as 50,000 psi, reactive atmosphere composed of CO, CO2, H2O, H2, N2, and numerous other identified and unidentified constituents. Superimposed on these conditions are the high velocity of gases and swaging action of the projectile rotating band. It is the objective of this presentation to review the physicochemical processes involved in erosion and indicate some critical areas which need further investigation. Also, various efforts to control erosion in barrels will be briefly discussed.

The chemical effect of a carburizing atmosphere in a gun tube was the main topic for investigation in this program. Experiments were conducted in the Shock Tube Gun (STG), a ballistic compressor, designed and developed by Calspan Corporation. This facility can compress mixtures of pure gases to simulate propellant gas flow condtions and cycle time experienced in large caliber guns. Test were conducted with a mixture of argon and nitrogen to delineate the threshold of simple melting erosion which served as a chemical inert baseline. Progressive substitution of carbon monoxide for nitrogen in the mix quantified the carburizing effect as a function of CO concentration. Subsequent tests were conducted with a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide, argon and helium to measure the carburizing effect as a function of cycle time. The basic carburizing effect was observed to be a shift in the erosion threshold to less severe convective heating conditions in response to surface chemistry. The magnitude of the shift appeared to be directly proportional to heating cycle time.

The thermochemical effects of altering the CO/CO2 ratio of a propellant gas in a gun tube was the main topic for investigation in this program. Experiments were conducted in the Shock Tube Gun (STG), a ballistic compressor, designed and developed by Calspan Corporation. This facility can compress mixtures of pure gases to simulate propellant gas flow conditions and cycle times experienced in large caliber guns. Tests were conducted with mixture ratios of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide that characterize the normal range of CO/CO2 ratios found in propellant gas, i.e., 2.0 to 8.1. Progressive substitution of carbon monoxide for nitrogen in the mix quantified erosion as a function of increasing Co concentration or CO/CO2 ratio. Subsequent tests were conducted with gas mixtures containing double the amount of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide but with the same effect CO/CO2 ratio, to measure erosion as a function of absolute reactant concentration for the two gas species. The basic chemical effect was observed to be a shift in the erosion threshold to less severe convective heating conditions in response to increasing the CO/CO2 ratio above a value of 5.6. The magnitude of the shift appeared to be directly proportional to the absolute concentrations of the two reactant gases. Variation of both CO/CO2 ratio and absolute amounts of the two gases resulted in distinct changes in specimen surface characteristics, both at near threshold and above threshold flow conditions.

Book excerpt: Experiments to determine the individual contributors to gun barrel erosion in an oxidizing atmosphere were conducted in the Shock Tube Gun (STG), a ballistic compressor, designed and developed by Calspan Corporation. This facility can compress mixtures of pure gases and can generate flow conditions and cycle times similar to those experienced in large caliber guns. Tests were conducted with a mixture of argon and nitrogen to define the threshold erosion for an inert baseline. Small concentration of oxygen were substituted for nitrogen in the mix to quantify the oxidation effect. Subsequently, tests were conducted with various gas mixtures containing carbon dioxide, which dissociates to produce oxygen when compressed to high temperatures. The basic oxidation effect was observed to be nearly linear increase in erosion with oxygen concentration. A corresponding shift in the erosion threshold to less severe convective heating conditions was observed in response to surface chemistry. A similar effect was observed for carbon dioxide mixture where erosion was correlated in terms of the equilibrium concentration of oxygen at peak pressure. Surface cracking was observed and found to be most severe near the erosion threshold where the oxide layer was thickest. A white layer was observed in tests with oxygen in the absence of carbon dioxide.

Book excerpt: An analysis was conducted on the performance of M16A1 rifles made by three manufacturers with the use of two kinds of ammunition and three rates of fire. Data include extreme spread and bore erosion gage measurements, each as a function of the number of rounds fired. Consistency is lacking in the experimental data, even though identical tests were performed. Probably, random vibrations of the gun barrel or other unknown phenomena may be the reason for inconsistency of spread data. Inconsistency in the penetration of erosion gages may be due to fouling deposits on the bore surface and to lack of properly designed tools for unique measurements. Large variations occur in the useful life of the barrels due to variations in manufacturing, ammunition, and firing rate. The typical rate of erosion is about one-thousandth of an inch per thousand rounds of fire. Gage Number 6 may be used to measure barrel erosion and ultimately to indicate when to discard the barrel. Erosion increases and useful life of the weapon decreases with increase in rate of fire. The useful life of the weapon may be approximated as inversely proportional to the two-third power of the firing rate.

Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of the principles and practical methods applicable to transient temperature measurements in engineering and science. Transient temperatures are taken to be in the range from about 200K to 6000K and with timescales from tenths of nanoseconds to tens ofseconds. Within these limits is a very large field of combustion and gas dynamics and these are the principle areas which are addressed. Several new experimental and theoretical techniques are introduced and various modes of thermal failure are described. The chapters move from undergraduate material to the latest methods and are designed to be of use to the widest possible range of engineers, scientists, and students working in universities or in chemical or mechanical engineering. Many applications are described.

While several new promising concepts and formulations have emerged in recent years, the Department of Defense is concerned about the nation's ability to maintain and improve the knowledge base in this area. To assist in addressing these concerns, two offices within DOD asked the NRC to investigate and assess the scope and health of the U.S. R&D efforts in energetic materials. This report provides that assessment. It presents several findings about the current R&D effort and recommendations aimed at improving U.S. capabilities in developing new energetic materials technology. This study reviewed U.S. research and development in advanced energetics being conducted by DoD, the DoE national laboratories, industries, and academia, from a list provided by the sponsors. It also: (a) reviewed papers and technology assessments of non-U.S. work in advanced energetics, assessed important parameters, such as validity, viability, and the likelihood that each of these materials can be produced in quantity; (b) identified barriers to scale-up and production, and suggested technical approaches for addressing potential problems; and (c) suggested specific opportunities, strategies, and priorities for government sponsorship of technologies and manufacturing process development.

Book excerpt: Eight commercially available ceramic materials were procured and evaluated for potential application as gun barrel liners. These materials included an alumina, zirconia, and SiAlON, as well as three silicon carbides and two silicon nitrides. Preliminary evaluation determined the strengths, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. An uncensored Weibull analysis was performed on all of the strength data. These databases were developed for use in the probabilistic modeling and design efforts of the program to predict performance, identify optimum gun barrel designs, and to rank and down select ceramics for further evaluation.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between gun design and advanced materials as they might be applied to improve guns were reviewed. The gun barrel environment is discussed in terms of possible applicability of ceramics and composites for the gun barrel. Prospects for lightening gun mounts, such as by the use of composites, are also considered. Among the conclusions reached are that new materials will be needed to cope with the extreme and abusive environment of a gun barrel. The new materials will require new design concepts. Erosion in gun barrels is a complex, poorly understood phenomenon. Similarly, the erosion-resistant capabilities of alternate materials are known. Ceramics have potential as liners, but they have the limitation that they must always be kept in compression to avoid fracture. It is premature to state that this can be achieved, since no comprehensive analysis exists that accounts for all thermal and mechanical loading in a multi-material gun tube. Both polymer- and metal-matrix composites are regarded as unsuitable for tubes, but they could be used with advantage in mounts, particularly in large-caliber guns.

Book excerpt: A former firearms executive pulls back the curtain on America's multibillion-dollar gun industry, exposing how it fostered extremism and racism, radicalizing the nation and bringing cultural division to a boiling point. As an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist–all things that the firearms industry was built on–Ryan Busse chased a childhood dream and built a successful career selling millions of firearms for one of America’s most popular gun companies. But blinded by the promise of massive profits, the gun industry abandoned its self-imposed decency in favor of hardline conservatism and McCarthyesque internal policing, sowing irreparable division in our politics and society. That drove Busse to do something few other gun executives have done: he's ending his 30-year career in the industry to show us how and why we got here. Gunfight is an insider’s call-out of a wild, secretive, and critically important industry. It shows us how America's gun industry shifted from prioritizing safety and ethics to one that is addicted to fear, conspiracy, intolerance, and secrecy. It recounts Busse's personal transformation and shows how authoritarianism spreads in the guise of freedom, how voicing one's conscience becomes an act of treason in a culture that demands sameness and loyalty. Gunfight offers a valuable perspective as the nation struggles to choose between armed violence or healing.
