Book excerpt: Copper and aluminium alloys are widely used in marine engineering in areas such as pipelines, storage tanks, ships’ hulls and cladding for offshore structures. This important book reviews key factors affecting the corrosion and service life of these materials in the marine environment. The book is divided into five parts, with part one reviewing key aspects of the corrosion behaviour of both these alloys. Part two discusses the use of copper and copper-nickel alloys in seawater, whilst Parts 3 and 4 cover aluminium bronzes and alloys. The final section of the book covers the use of aluminium-based materials as anodes for the cathodic protection of marine structures. Corrosion behaviour and protection of copper and aluminium alloys in seawater is an important reference for marine engineers concerned with the corrosion and service life of these materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuable information on corrosion fundamentals and applications of aluminum and magnesium Aluminum and magnesium alloys are receiving increased attention due to their light weight, abundance, and resistance to corrosion. In particular, when used in automobile manufacturing, these alloys promise reduced car weights, lower fuel consumption, and resulting environmental benefits. Meeting the need for a single source on this subject, Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum and Magnesium Alloys gives scientists, engineers, and students a one-stop reference for understanding both the corrosion fundamentals and applications relevant to these important light metals. Written by a world leader in the field, the text considers corrosion phenomena for the two metals in a systematic and parallel fashion. The coverage includes: The essentials of corrosion for aqueous, high temperature corrosion, and active-passive behavior of aluminum and magnesium alloys The performance and corrosion forms of aluminum alloys The performance and corrosion forms of magnesium alloys Corrosion prevention methods such as coatings for aluminum and magnesium Electrochemical methods of corrosion investigation and their application to aluminum and magnesium alloys Offering case studies and detailed references, Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum and Magnesium Alloys provides an essential, up-to-date resource for graduate-level study, as well as a working reference for professionals using aluminum, magnesium, and their alloys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribocorrosion causes the degradation or alteration of materials through the combined action of corrosion and wear. It limits the performance and life-time of installations, machines and devices with moving parts, and controls certain manufacturing processes such as chemical–mechanical polishing. The effects of tribocorrosion are most pronounced on passive metals which owe their corrosion resistance to a thin protecting oxide film. Most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys belong to this category. This book provides an introduction to the developing field of tribocorrosion and an overview of the latest research. Part one reviews basic notions of corrosion and tribology, before presenting the most recent results on the growth and structure of passive oxide films. Tribocorrosion mechanisms under fretting, sliding and erosion conditions, respectively, are then discussed. Part two focuses on methods for measuring and preventing tribocorrosion. It includes chapters on electrochemical techniques, the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of materials’ properties for tribocorrosion systems. Part three presents a selection of tribocorrosion problems in engineering and medicine. Three chapters address the tribocorrosion of medical implants including test methods and clinical implications. Other chapters examine tribocorrosion issues in nuclear power plants, marine environments, automotive cooling circuits, elevated-temperature metal working and chemical–mechanical polishing. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors Tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings is an invaluable reference tool for engineers and researchers in industry and academia confronted with tribocorrosion problems. Comprehensively reviews current research on the tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings, with particular reference to the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of materials’ properties for tribocorrosion systems Chapters discuss tribocorrosion mechanisms under fretting, sliding and erosion conditions before focussing on methods for measuring and preventing tribocorrosion Includes a comprehensive selection of tribocorrosion problems in engineering and medicine, such as the tribocorrosion of medical implants, and tribocorrosion issues in nuclear power plants, marine environments, automotive cooling circuits and elevated-temperature metal working

Book excerpt: The object of this program is to develop a fundamental understanding of the influence of applied potential on mechanisms for erosion-corrosion as applied to copper and copper-based alloys. This work is intended to allow application of laboratory experiments to predict the onset of erosion-corrosion failure under field conditions and to guide development of workable strategies for prevention of erosion-corrosion. This program is being transferred to the University of Florida; therefore, this report provides a summary of the activities at the University of Virginia. In the first year of the program, an electrochemical cell incorporating a scanning ellipsometer was designed and built. The cell uses a submerged electrolyte jet impinging on an electrode. The laser spot size is around 25 x 70 micro meters, and the position of the electrode-jet assembly relative to the laser spot can be controlled by stepping motor stages without altering the hydrodynamic environment.
