Book Synopsis Malthus, Medicine & Morality by : Brian Dolan
Download or read book Malthus, Medicine & Morality written by Brian Dolan and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Robert Malthus's reputation has lately been rehabilitated in the fields of social biology, demography, environmentalism, and economics. In the midst of this current interest and with the chance to mark the occasion of the bicentenary of the first edition of the Essay on Population (1798), the contributors to this volume take this timely opportunity to examine the historical conditions in which Malthus constructed his theory, and in which the concept of a 'Malthusian' and 'Neo-Malthusian' philosophy first emerged. The essays redress the balance between Malthus's original argument, the immediate responses to Malthus by medics and theologians in Britain and on the Continent, and some of the ways that his ideas were later attacked, appropriated, or misrepresented. Included here are essays that not only re-evaluate the development of Malthus's theory, but also offer critical perspectives on the generation of the 'Malthusian league' and debates about birth control in Britain and on the Continent, and Malthus's influence on the emergence of social science and Darwinian evolutionary biology.
Book Synopsis The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass by : Jean-Jacques Olier
Download or read book The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass written by Jean-Jacques Olier and published by Angelico Press. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olier's The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass, first published in 1657, and presented here with an Introduction by Abbé Claude Barthe, is an outstanding example of the application-to the liturgy and its actions-of the search for a deeper meaning that has also been so influential throughout the history of contemplative Christianity in the resonant, anagogical reading of the Bible. Olier shows us that there is nothing in the traditional Catholic Mass that lacks its own progressively deeper levels of meaning, and that for this reason cannot inspire in us new spiritual insights: new "visions of heaven." Olier writes as eloquently as he spoke; the flow of his eloquence carries us with him as he brings to light many a sparkling gem lying too long concealed in the spiritual treasure-trove of the Mass. To follow him in his inspired excavations is an unforgettable spiritual adventure of discovery.

Download or read book The Text of Marcion’s Gospel written by Dieter T. Roth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Text of Marcion’s Gospel Dieter T. Roth offers a new, critical reconstruction of Marcion’s Gospel including various levels of certainty for readings in this Gospel text. An extensive history of research, overview of both attested and unattested verses in the various sources, and methodological considerations related, in particular, to understanding the citation customs of the sources set the stage for a comprehensive analysis of all relevant data concerning Marcion’s Gospel. On the basis of this new reconstruction significant issues in the study of early Christianity, including the relationship between Marcion’s Gospel and Luke and the place of Marcion in the history of the canon and the formation of the fourfold Gospel, can be considered anew.
Book Synopsis Prometheus Rebound by : Joseph C. McLelland
Download or read book Prometheus Rebound written by Joseph C. McLelland and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1989-01-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern atheism is a further act in the ancient drama of Prometheus vs Zeus. This book argues that the antagonism is false, as proved by the "irony": in which atheism turns into antitheism, transferring divine qualities to Humanity. The drama is framed by the "classicla dilemma," a conflict of wills: Tyrant and Rebel. The Unbinding of Prometheus is traced through Western history, to the Enlightenment "death of God," both speculative (Hegel) and practical (Marx). Finally, four types of "idols" are examined, in which Prometheus is rebound: Freud's Oedipus, Nietzsche's Dionysus, Camus' Sisyphus and Sartre's Orestes. The revision of both theism and atheism demands re-casting Zeus and Prometheus, breaking the impasse of heteronomy/autonomy and omnipotence/free will. Only thus may we affirm Humanity without denying God.
