Book excerpt: Erasing The Orange Line, is the sequel to the previous book, The Orange Line. This book is a continuation of their lives, their hopes and dreams after the Championship Football Game in their senior year. Views about segregation changed for some and because of that change, many lives improved. Experience the fun and laughter; the heartbreak and sadness encountered by the troubled years of nineteen fifty and nineteen fifty-one. After graduation, decisions had to be made by young adults concerning their future, but because of the draft their plans took second place to the war in Korea. It was very difficult to plan a future with the Korean Conflict in full swing, therefore, for some, it was just better to volunteer for the service and complete your duty before making plans for the future. Jimmy Ray, (Fatso) and Sammy elected to put their plans on hold and go ahead and enlist in their chosen branch of service. Both were sent to Korea after basic training, where their paths crossed many times. This was a lasting friendship that lasted until tragedy struck because of a war that was not called a war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first heard about Haymakers for Hope, I was overtaken with two conflicting emotions: excitement and trepidation. The latter, of course, was natural considering the fact that few of us will ever box three two-minute rounds in a ring at The House of Blues in Boston in front of 1,500 screaming fans. The former, however, was aided and abetted by Jimmy McGrail, a friend from Charlestown who competed at the 2012 event and would become my mentor for this challenge. After listening to his stories about training and the amazing group of people associated with Haymakers for Hope, I was hooked. Soon, I learned that two friends-of-friends had fought in previous years and that an acquaintance of mine was also signed up for this year's card. I have done some crazy athletic stunts in the past, but this one had to be the most daring. Whatever bravery I needed to muster, though, paled in comparison to the struggles of several people I know who have battled cancer in the past and are fighting for their lives now. I boxed for them because they have inspired me with courage and candor throughout their treatments and recoveries. Lyn Ackerly, this one was for you! Beyond the personal test of conditioning oneself for a bout, it was the mission of supporting The Jimmy Fund and The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute that made taking a few punches all the more rewarding. I was fortunate to get into the ring with fellow participants Matt Smith, Maria Tedeschi, Judd Smith, Michelle Kalas, and Ned Hare - and to spar with a great boxer like Jesse Rasid - at Quietman Sports Gym under the direction of our trainer, Dan Parks. We did our best to make one another better and collectively raised over $40K to fight cancer. This poetry journal/journey details the emotions of a five-month, irreproducible saga and includes photographs of and commentary from many of the Boston '13 boxers. Best of all, part of the proceeds from sales will benefit Haymakers for Hope. Follow @StandsABoxer on Twitter. George Aaron Cuddy @cuddyboston September 2013

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do literary dystopias reflect about the times? In Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase, contributors address this amorphous but pervasive genre, using diverse critical methodologies to examine how North America is conveyed or portrayed in a perceived age of crisis, accelerated uncertainty, and political volatility. Drawing from contemporary novels such as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, and the work of Margaret Atwood and William Gibson (to name a few), this book examines dystopian literature produced by North American authors between the signing of NAFTA (1994) and the tenth anniversary of 9/11 (2011). As the texts illustrate, awareness of and deep concern about perceived vulnerabilities—ends of water, oil, food, capitalism, empires, stable climates, ways of life, non-human species, and entire human civilizations—have become central to public discourseover the same period. By asking questions such as “What are the distinctive qualities of post-NAFTA North American dystopian literature?” and “What does this literature reflect about the tensions and contradictions of the inchoate continental community of North America?” Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase serves to resituate dystopian writing within a particular geo-social setting and introduce a productive means to understand both North American dystopian writing and its relevant engagements with a restricted, mapped reality.

Book excerpt: What does it take to become a great artist? Is it simply a matter of unlocking our innate talent, or is it something developed through training and experience? What obstacles must you overcome, especially if you are a woman in a male dominated art world? This novel explores those questions through the story of a woman who grew up in rural Texas during the Great Depression. Although suffering the trauma of poverty, childhood abuse, and marriage to an unfaithful and domineering husband, she dedicates her life to becoming an artist. But that road is far from easy. Ultimately it will mean leaving her family and her home in Texas and venturing on a journey filled with many obstacles to overcome. This novel, told by the owner of a prestigious New York art gallery, will follow the life of this courageous woman in her quest to reach greatness as an artist and overcome her past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Clearing the Air, Gregory Wood examines smoking's importance to the social and cultural history of working people in the twentieth-century United States. Now that most workplaces in the United States are smoke-free, it may be difficult to imagine the influence that nicotine addiction once had on the politics of worker resistance, workplace management, occupational health, vice, moral reform, grassroots activism, and the labor movement. The experiences, social relations, demands, and disputes that accompanied smoking in the workplace in turn shaped the histories of antismoking politics and tobacco control. The steady expansion of cigarette smoking among men, women, and children during the first half of the twentieth century brought working people into sustained conflict with managers’ demands for diligent attention to labor processes and work rules. Addiction to nicotine led smokers to resist and challenge policies that coldly stood between them and the cigarettes they craved. Wood argues that workers’ varying abilities to smoke on the job stemmed from the success or failure of sustained opposition to employer policies that restricted or banned smoking. During World War II, workers in defense industries, for example, struck against workplace smoking bans. By the 1970s, opponents of smoking in workplaces began to organize, and changing medical knowledge and dwindling union power contributed further to the downfall of workplace smoking. The demise of the ability to smoke on the job over the past four decades serves as an important indicator of how the power of workers’ influence in labor-management relations has dwindled over the same period.
