Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every church is called to some form of family ministry, but this calling requires far more than adding another program to an already-packed schedule. The most effective family ministries refocus every church process to engage parents in discipling their children and to draw family members together instead of pulling them apart. In this second edition, Jones expands the definition of family ministry, and broadens the book's focus to address urban perspectives and family ministry in diverse settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visionary book for the emergent church. The church must be like water--flexible, fluid, changeable. This book is a vision for how the church can embrace the liquid nature of culture rather than just scrambling to keep afloat while sailing over it. Ward urges us to move away from the traditional notion of church as a gathering of people meeting in one place at one time to the dynamic notion of the emergent church as a series of relationships and communications. In the Liquid Church, membership is determined by participation and involvement. Liquid Church is continually on the move, flowing in response to the Spirit and the gospel of Jesus, the imagination and creativity of its leaders, and the choices and experiences of it worshippers. In this provocative, insightful, and challenging book, Pete Ward presents his vision of a Liquid Church that addresses the needs of the isolated consumer-Christian by providing connection and community, located in common cause and similar desire for God.

In this follow-up book to The Complete Worship Leader, veteran worship leader and pastor Kevin Navarro helps church leaders create a complete worship service by implementing a four-part pattern of worship: longing for, preparing for, experiencing, and talking about a taste of heaven. Approaching the worship service as an act of hospitality, Navarro emphasizes clearing away obstacles and communicating the gospel. He shares practical ideas for churches of all kinds and sizes-everything from assisting guests to using the arts to centering the preaching on Christ. Pastors, worship leaders, and church leaders of any denomination and worship style will benefit from this practical guide.

Book excerpt: The one great obsession of A.W. Tozer's life was worship. Many have written about worship, but Tozer surpassed them all in simple passion and supreme purpose. Compiled from material never before published, this book presents A.W. Tozer's systematic teaching on worship. His thoughts on the subject were deeply rooted in biblical doctrine and historic writings, blending Scripture with some of the great devotional writers throughout history. Be inspired to not only understand worship but also experience it in your own heart. This will be the best teaching in my ministry. I want to deliver my soul as a prophet of God to the people, and to explain why we were created and why we are here, not to the satisfaction of the needed appetite only but to something bigger, grander and more eternal, that we might worship God and enjoy Him forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do you lead worship? Often the motives are mixed. You find yourself wanting to point people to Jesus but also feeling a desire to be noticed and praised, to make yourself the center of attention. Stephen Miller is the worship pastor for a large church of young, energetic Christians. He and his band record albums and lead worship for conferences all over the country. He knows the temptation to make himself the show, to pursue fame, to seek the applause of other people. And he has learned to want nothing to do with it. In this book, Miller exhorts his fellow worship leaders to make Jesus the center of all their efforts. He teaches how to do this with Scripture, teaching, prayer, story, and song. In all, Miller’s call for worship leaders is to lead worship, whole-hearted and whole-minded exalting of God, rather than making a spectacle out of it. Worship Leaders, We’re Not Rock Stars will encourage and challenge worship leaders by clarifying their purpose and identity, and by doing so will bless those they lead.

Chapter 3 considers the variety of ministry models in modern churches that seek to equip parents as primary disciple-makers of their children and seeks to promote the Family-Equipping Model as strongest. Chapter 4 describes the project as the teaching series is carried out week-by-week. Chapter 5 evaluates the project based on completion of the specified goals. The final purpose of this project is to equip parents to understand the urgency of carrying out discipleship in their home with their children and not relying on anyone else, even the church, to do this important work for them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brunner sees St Paul's Epistle to the Romans as 'the chapter of destiny of the Christian Church'. Here, in Luther's words, is the 'purest gospel' upon which the very existence of the Christian faith depends and from which it draws its life. Concentrated, decisive and instructive, nothing within the New Testament is more closely argued both theological and personal. Out of his years of scholarly wisdom Brunner meditates on the great Question: What is wrong with the Churches? Brunner finds an answer in thecontrast between the virile Spirit-filled fellowship of the New Testament and the institutions which are now called 'churches'. He writes in his preface: 'The title of the book, The Misunderstanding of the Church, is equivocal. Is it a question of a misunderstanding of which the Church is guilty, or of a misunderstanding of which it is the victim? Or is it that the Church itself, as such, is perhaps the product of a misunderstanding? The author is not responsible for this ambiguity; it is intrinsic in the theme itself.

Book excerpt: "The opening section of "Music and the Arts in Christian Worship" offers an overview of the current worship practices of most of the major denominations in this country, each prepared by a person active in that particular church. Read individually, they furnish a wealth of fresh ideas; collectively, they give evidence that, while each denomination remains theologically focused on its tradition and centers its worship on the familiar, there is hardly one which is not actively re-examining its worship philosophy and experimenting with new forms, music, and visual art. Style is becoming more and more eclectic, and there is a healthy regard for the special contribution that every individual may make. Worship, once almost the property of the officiating clergyman rigorously hewing to a prescribed pattern, has rightly become the responsibility of every person." " Philip Beggrov Peters, Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While staying in the United States in 1884 at the age of 23, Kanzo Uchimura (1861-1930) felt a sense of religious calling that led him to devote the rest of his life to Christian mission in Japan. His subsequent life and work earned him recognition as one of the most important Japanese thinkers, essayists, and theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Uchimura claimed that Japan adopted Western civilization at the reopening of the country in the late nineteenth century but did not adopt Christianity itself -- the very cause, spirit, and life of Western civilization. This was the origin of all the difficulties Japan had been experiencing. There is no question that Uchimura believed Christianity would save Japan and the Japanese; the real question was "What kind of Christianity?" In his view Christian faith entails a radical dependence on the gospel; baptism, communion, and the other sacraments are not necessary. He also believed that God's truth can be revealed directly to each individual, so that an intermediary between God and people, such as a minister, priest, or pope, is not required. This argument led Uchimura to start the Mukyokai-shugi (Non-churchism), a denial of the institutional church. Miura here explores in depth this theme in Uchimura's thought as well as Uchimura's particular vision of Japan's mission to the world. This study not only offers Western readers new information about Kanzo Uchimura and the Japanese Non- church Movement; it also provides important insights into the way Christianity can be indigenized in a new culture, such as that of modern Japan.

The originator and proponent of a particularly"Japanese" form of Christianity known as mukyôkai, Uchimurastruggled with the tensions between his love for the homeland and hislove for God. Articulate, prolific, passionate, and profound, he earneda reputation as the most consistent critic of his society andknowledgeable Japanese interpreter of Christianity and its Bible.Through this exceptional man’s life, John Howes charts what itmeant to live during the introduction of Christianity to Japan.
