This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Bridges, Pathways and Transitions by : Mahsood Shah
Download or read book Bridges, Pathways and Transitions written by Mahsood Shah and published by Chandos Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges, Pathways and Transitions: International Innovations in Widening Participation shows that widening participation initiatives and policies have had a profound impact on improving access to higher education to historically marginalized groups of students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The research presented provides a source of inspiration to students who are navigating disadvantage to succeed in higher education against the odds. There are stories of success in difficult circumstances, revealing the resilience and determination of individuals and collectives to fight for a place in higher education to improve chances for securing social mobility for next generations. The book also reveals that more work and policy interventions are needed to further equalize the playing field between social groups. Governments need to address the entrenched structural inequalities, particularly the effects of poverty, that prevent more academically able disadvantaged students from participating in higher education on the basis of the circumstances of their birth. Across the globe, social reproduction is far more likely than social mobility because of policies and practices that continue to protect the privilege of those in the middle and top of social structures. With the gap between rich and poor widening at a rate previously unseen, we need radical policies to equalize the playing field in fundamental ways. - Focuses on collaborations with schools, families, and communities - Highlights tools and methods to aid in the creation of pathways, bridging initiatives into higher education - Includes case studies that show how students are supported during the transition into high education systems

This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to help jump-start an urgently needed conversation about fairness and justice in access to higher education to counteract the ubiquitous mantras of neoliberal globalization and managerialism. The book seeks to carve out a strong moral and normative basis for opposing mainstream developments that engender increasing inequality and market-dependency in higher education. The book’s chapters consider how different national communities channel access to higher education, what their “implicit social contracts” are, and what outcomes are produced by different policies and methods. The book is essential reading for scholars of higher education and students concerned with increasing inequality in a globalizing educational marketplace.

Book Synopsis Understanding Southern Social Movements by : Simin Fadaee
Download or read book Understanding Southern Social Movements written by Simin Fadaee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern social movements have played an important role in shaping world history and politics. Nevertheless, scholarly literature on movements of the global South remains limited and restricted to testing the social movement theory which was developed in the North. This Northern-centric approach largely fails to provide a meaningful understanding of Southern movements because it is not directly applicable to the differing historical backgrounds, culture and socio-economic structures found in the South. Much of the uniqueness and complexity of Southern social movements has therefore been overlooked. This collection analyses recent events and developments in Southern social movements, introducing well-researched case studies from fifteen countries of the global South. Arranged in two parts, the volume examines firstly movements which focus on rights and quality of life issues, and secondly the post-2011 wave of uprisings which started with Tunisian and Egyptian movements. Contributing to ongoing discussions about the Northern-centric nature of social movement theory and the social sciences more generally, the authors enter into dialogue with the debate on local and national levels, as well as globalizing processes. Through an interdisciplinary approach this book broadens the theoretical and empirical perspectives for the study of social movements and will appeal to sociologists, political scientists, scholars and students of social movements, and social activists.
Book Synopsis Quality and Qualities: Tensions in Education Reforms by : Clementina Acedo
Download or read book Quality and Qualities: Tensions in Education Reforms written by Clementina Acedo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality and Qualities: Tensions in Education Reforms is a provocative call for understanding and further exploring the elusive concept of quality in education. Although education quality has acquired high priority in the past few decades, the multiplicity of conceptualizations of quality also reflects the concerns and foci of multiple stakeholders. Coming to an understanding of quality education involves careful analysis of the context from which any particular reform or program emerges and of the continuing struggle to define and achieve it. Two main questions persist: who benefits from particular policies focused on quality? And what are the potential tradeoffs between a focus on quality, equitable distribution of education, and inclusion of various traditional expectations? This book explores notions of quality as understood within various systems of national, formal, and nonformal education. Also it considers the tensions that arise with the introduction of new standardized notions of quality in relation to international measures and educational reforms in developing countries. In all cases, specific national issues and concerns compete with global agendas.Challenges to quality that are given particular attention in the book chapters include changing definitions of quality, high expectations for education and issues with implementation, and the introduction of English as a means to achieve quality in a globalizing world. Special attention is also given to possible actions that support a more equitable education without ignoring the requisite of quality. The final chapter suggests three models/choices for seeking higher quality and guiding the educational future of nations.

Furthermore, the book provides an overview of the development of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean, to advance understanding of the changes observed in the institutional strategic management setting. The book examines and compares the types of strategic management processes used, as well as the models of applicability of strategy-making. Additionally, the book introduces a methodology for the identification and implementation of best practice in university strategic management, and presents practical suggestions about the ways in which processes and models can be used to increase quality and competitive advantage.
