Book excerpt: Equality in law between men and women in the European Community is an integral part of the EC's social policy and crucial to its economic and social cohesion. This encyclopaedia analyzes the legal framework for equal opportunities in Portugal which now exists in the Community due to the adoption of EC Directives on equal treatment, equal pay and social security, and to the work of the European Court of Justice in this area. It looks at how the EC Directives have been implemented and interpreted in each Member State, and at the other legislative and constitutional provisions affecting the principle of equality. All the principal legal provisions are reproduced or translated. Extracts from or digests of national case law are also included. Each volume in the series is structured so that Member States's provisions on equality can be directly compared.

Book Synopsis Country Report, Gender Equality by :
Download or read book Country Report, Gender Equality written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portuguese legal system is mainly a statutory law system, headed by the Portuguese Constitution (PC) and developed by state legislation. Where employment and industrial relations are concerned, the Labour Code (LC) is the essential statutory piece of legislation and it also integrates the main provisions in the field of gender equality and non-discrimination principle on other grounds related to employment. In the field of employment and industrial relations (including in relation to gender equality and non-discrimination principles in this field), collective agreements are also a key element of the system, but they cannot go against mandatory legal provisions. European Directives are generally transposed into national legislation by statutory law and not by collective agreements, which also applies to equality legislation. Apart from the area of employment, gender equality provisions are found in several acts, according to the various fields.
Download or read book Violence Against Women written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Violence against women undermines women's core fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. For example, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15; one in five women has experienced stalking; every second woman has been confronted with one or more forms of sexual harassment. What emerges is a picture of extensive abuse that affects many women's lives but is systematically underreported to the authorities. The scale of violence against women is therefore not reflected by official data. This FRA survey is the first of its kind on violence against women across the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU). It is based on interviews with 42,000 women across the EU, who were asked about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including incidents of intimate partner violence ('domestic violence'). The survey also included questions on stalking, sexual harassment, and the role played by new technologies in women's experiences of abuse. In addition, it asked about their experiences of violence in childhood. Based on the detailed findings, FRA suggests courses of action in different areas that are touched by violence against women and go beyond the narrow confines of criminal law, ranging from employment and health to the medium of new technologies."--Editor.
