Book excerpt: Aerobic Granular Sludge has recently received growing attention by researchers and technology developers, worldwide. Laboratory studies and preliminary field tests led to the conclusion that granular activated sludge can be readily established and profitably used in activated sludge plants, provided 'correct' process conditions are chosen. But what makes process conditions 'correct'? And what makes granules different from activated sludge flocs? Answers to these question are offered in Aerobic Granular Sludge. Major topics covered in this book include: Reasons and mechanism of aerobic granule formation Structure of the microbial population of aerobic granules Role, composition and physical properties of EPS Diffuse limitation and microbial activity within granules Physio-chemical characteristics Operation and application of granule reactors Scale-up aspects of granular sludge reactors, and case studies Aerobic Granular Sludge provides up-to-date information about a rapidly emerging new technology of biological treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we design more sustainable industrial and urban systems that reduce environmental impacts while supporting a high quality of life for everyone? What progress has been made towards reducing resource use and waste, and what are the prospects for more resilient, material-efficient economies? What are the environmental and social impacts of global supply chains and how can they be measured and improved? Such questions are at the heart of the emerging discipline of industrial ecology, covered in Taking Stock of Industrial Ecology. Leading authors, researchers and practitioners review how far industrial ecology has developed and current issues and concerns, with illustrations of what the industrial ecology paradigm has achieved in public policy, corporate strategy and industrial practice. It provides an introduction for students coming to industrial ecology and for professionals who wish to understand what industrial ecology can offer, a reference for researchers and practitioners and a source of case studies for teachers.

Book Synopsis Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture by : Hiroshan Hettiarachchi
Download or read book Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture written by Hiroshan Hettiarachchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a broad and global level description of the current status of wastewater use in agriculture and then brings the readers to various places in the MENA Region and Europe to explain how some countries and regions have addressed the challenges during implementation. On a global scale, over 20 million hectares of agricultural land are irrigated using wastewater. This is one good, and perhaps the most prominent, example of the safe use potential of wastewater. Water scarcity and the cost of energy and fertilisers are among the main factors driving millions of farmers and other entrepreneurs to make use of wastewater. In order to address the technical, institutional, and policy challenges of safe water reuse, developing countries and countries in transition need clear institutional arrangements and more skilled human resources, with a sound understanding of the opportunities and potential risks of wastewater use. Stakeholders in wastewater irrigation who need to implement from scratch or improve current conditions, find it difficult to gather the necessary information on practical implementation aspects. The main objective of this book is to bridge that gap.
Book Synopsis Europe's Environment by : European Environment Agency
Download or read book Europe's Environment written by European Environment Agency and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third review in the series of reports on the state of the environment throughout the European continent, which also provides an assessment of how the main economic driving forces put pressure on the environment and identifies key areas where further action is needed. It was prepared for the meeting of European environmental ministers held under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe in Ukraine in May 2003. For the first time, this review covers the entire Russian Federation and the 11 other Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian (EECCA) states. Chapters consider: developments in socio-economic sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, transport and tourism; prominent environmental problems such as climate change, ozone depletion, air pollution and soil degradation; cross-cutting issues of biological diversity and human health impacts; and policy management aspects.
Book Synopsis Food Waste Reduction and Valorisation by : Piergiuseppe Morone
Download or read book Food Waste Reduction and Valorisation written by Piergiuseppe Morone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adds a new dimension to the sustainability assessment of food waste reduction and valorisation: policy analysis. Featuring a transdisciplinary analysis by key experts in the field, it identifies the drivers of change in food-waste reduction and valorisation technologies by looking, for example, at the regulatory framework and at policy actions undertaken by local and global actors. The book explores the development of regulations and policies for food-waste prevention, management, and valorisation at a global as well as European Union level. It also discusses the notion of food waste in legal terms and investigates the effects of the lack of a standard, universal definition of food waste on the efficient use of by-products, promising processes and products for technological and commercial exploitation. Utilising mathematical mapping methods to assess food consumption impacts and providing supply chain models that allow the testing of consumption scenarios, the book goes on to discuss a series of emerging technologies (tested at lab scale and/ or pilot scale) and opportunities for the valorisation of food waste.

Book Synopsis Water Governance in the Netherlands by : Oecd
Download or read book Water Governance in the Netherlands written by Oecd and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the extent to which Dutch water governance is fit for future challenges and sketches an agenda for the reform of water policies in the Netherlands. It builds on a one-year policy dialogue with over 100 Dutch stakeholders, supported by robust analytical work and drawing on international best practice. The Netherlands is a pioneer country in water management. It is widely known for its track record in reclaiming land from the sea, as well as its world-class engineering, strong water industry, and agricultural performance. But are these assets enough to cope with current and future challenges? Or do these challenges call for different organisational settings? It is the purpose of the OECD-Netherlands water policy dialogue to address this question,by applying a lens to the current state of play in Dutch water management and identifying ways in which the governance framework can be adjusted so that it is "fit for the future". This report on the outcomes of the policy dialogue focuses on the close interconnection between water governance and water security, both now and in the future. It outlines an agenda for future water policies in the Netherlands, which can improve the country's capacity to cope with future trends driven by climate change, economic growth, demographic patterns or innovation.
Book Synopsis Advanced Gas Turbine Cycles by : J.H. Horlock
Download or read book Advanced Gas Turbine Cycles written by J.H. Horlock and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primarily this book describes the thermodynamics of gas turbine cycles. The search for high gas turbine efficiency has produced many variations on the simple "open circuit" plant, involving the use of heat exchangers, reheating and intercooling, water and steam injection, cogeneration and combined cycle plants. These are described fully in the text. A review of recent proposals for a number of novel gas turbine cycles is also included. In the past few years work has been directed towards developing gas turbines which produce less carbon dioxide, or plants from which the CO2 can be disposed of; the implications of a carbon tax on electricity pricing are considered. In presenting this wide survey of gas turbine cycles for power generation the author calls on both his academic experience (at Cambridge and Liverpool Universities, the Gas Turbine Laboratory at MIT and Penn State University) and his industrial work (primarily with Rolls Royce, plc.) The book will be essential reading for final year and masters students in mechanical engineering, and for practising engineers.
Book Synopsis Cult Objects of the Neolithic Lengyel Culture by : Eszter Bánffy
Download or read book Cult Objects of the Neolithic Lengyel Culture written by Eszter Bánffy and published by Archaeolingua. This book was released on 1997 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Altarpieces" are artefacts characteristic of the Lengyel and Moravian Painted cultures, extending across central Europe from 4800-4300 BC. Ranging from 4-12 cm high, cubic in shape, with a small depression in the top, these clay objects have puzzled archaeologists. After cataloguing the published finds under a new typological system, the author examines the surroundings of those examples found in closed contexts in order to work her way towards an understanding of their function. She examines their relationship to identical shapes in the Bronze Age of south eastern Europe and their temporal variation in the process.
