This book was released on 1999 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agreement on the ministry is one of the most elusive facets of the search for the visible unity of the church. And among the differences which separate churches in this area, one of the hardest to resolve is how the ministry of oversight or episkope is exercised. Recognizing that new forms of exercising oversight were emerging and new questions about episkope arising, the Fifth World Conference on Faith and Order (Santiago de Compostela, 1993) urged renewed ecumenical study of this theme. The present volume is the fruit of the resulting process of exchange and discussion undertaken by the WCC's Faith and Order Commission, focusing in two consultations - in Strasbourg, France in April 1997, and in Cret-Berard, Switzerland, in September 1997.

Book Synopsis Theological Foundations for Collaborative Ministry by : Rt Revd Dr Stephen Pickard
Download or read book Theological Foundations for Collaborative Ministry written by Rt Revd Dr Stephen Pickard and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theological foundations of a collaborative approach to Christian ministry. The discovery that Christians are members 'one of another' creates energy and joy in ministry and empowers the Church in an age of mission. Outlining the present challenges for ministry, Stephen Pickard offers an historical perspective on ministry over the last century; develops a theory of collaborative ministry based on a dialogue between theology and science; and explores some implications of collaborative ministry for lay and ordained people of the Church. This book breaks new ground in its theory of collaborative ministry through a dialogue with the sciences of emergence. It also offers fresh insights on important texts in ministry; relationships between Christology, pneumatology and ministry; a relational ontology of ministry; episcopacy, ecumenism, ordination vows and wisdom for team ministry.

Book Synopsis For the Communion of the Churches by : Groupe des Dombes
Download or read book For the Communion of the Churches written by Groupe des Dombes and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-17 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded by Abb Paul Couturier in 1937, the Groupe des Dombes is a Protestant-Catholic coalition in French-speaking Europe uniting Reformed, Lutheran, and Catholic scholars in a common spirit of prayer, dialogue, and discernment. Its pioneering work of reconciliation has influenced many other official ecumenical dialogues. This volume presents six statements produced by the Groupe des Dombes from 1971 to 1991, which appear here together in English translation for the first time. These substantial documents express the Groupe s keen insights into the renewal of theology and church life that is necessary for progress toward full ecclesial unity and they invite churches to pursue fruitful dialogue, mutual understanding, harmony, and the hopeful vision of a future in full communion. In the journey of the churches toward the unity for which Christ prayed, no other informal group of scholars has been so influential or long-standing in their service as the French Groupe des Dombes. We can be grateful to have this group of texts drawn together, including one newly translated, which have had such a historic role in developing agreements among the churches. The skillful introduction makes these texts a useful resource for teaching, exploring ecumenical history, and providing resources for church leaders in their response to Christ s prayer that they all may be one. Jeffrey Gros, FSC Memphis Theological Seminary Until now, most of these Groupe des Dombes documents have not been readily accessible to English-language readers. . . . We are very grateful to Catherine E. Clifford for collecting these important documents and for translating the text on the papal ministry. This book will help many people to progress toward the communion of the churches. Joseph Famere Catholic University of Louvain
Book Synopsis Laity and Participation by : Thomas Hoebel
Download or read book Laity and Participation written by Thomas Hoebel and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right across denominational boundaries lay theology is dominated by negatives: the laity simply defined as the non-ordained, the alleged exclusion of the laity from full participation, the sole focus on what they cannot or should not do, and, above all, the total absence of an ecumenical lay theology. In a unique approach, this volume sets out to find ways of overcoming these negatives so predominant in current lay theology. The author explores positions and perspectives put forward in Roman Catholic theology from Vatican II up to the present. These are compared and contrasted with concepts and suggestions of present-day Anglican Theology as well as with those of liberative theologies in Latin America and Asia. Rethinking the content, language, and metaphors of lay theology, in the final part of this volume the author proposes a new image for discussing the Church, a model focusing on the interdependence and collaboration of all the people in the Church. This is then used to sketch out the framework for a new type of lay theology. Imbedded in ecclesiology, in the concept of all believers together being the Church, the author endeavours to suggest a lay theology that is indeed positive, ecumenical and universal.
Book Synopsis Amt, Ordination, Episkopé und theologische Ausbildung / Ministry, ordination, episkopé and theological education by : Mario Fischer
Download or read book Amt, Ordination, Episkopé und theologische Ausbildung / Ministry, ordination, episkopé and theological education written by Mario Fischer and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume documents three sets of findings by the CPCE which were accepted by the 2012 and 2018 General Assemblies. The report of the doctrinal conversation on "Ministry, Ordination, Episkope" defines the Protestant position on these issues, which are of vital ecumenical interest. At the same time, it seeks to deepen the church communion of CPCE member churches. This is also the aim of the studies "Training for the ordained ministry in the CPCE" and "Continuing education for the ordained ministry in the CPCE". They outline a common understanding of good training that the member churches can take as a guideline.

Book Synopsis Interpreting Together by : World Council of Churches. Commission on Faith and Order
Download or read book Interpreting Together written by World Council of Churches. Commission on Faith and Order and published by World Council of Churches. This book was released on 2001 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that people read and understand texts in different ways is surely one of the main sources of Christian division, and one of the reasons Christians remain divided today. What is the role of culture in shaping our ways and means of interpretation? A certain diversity in interpretations is to be expected and celebrated. But can there be agreed criteria for setting the limits to diversity? Could there be guidelines for interpreting texts and symbols ecumenically, in a way that bridges some of our confessional and cultural differences? Questions such as these have formed the basis of the work of the World Council of Church's Faith and Order commission in the area of ecumenical hermeneutics. This book brings together the text of Faith and Order's study process (A Treasure in Earthen Vessels) as well as several essays contributed along the way by participants from different confessional and regional backgrounds These essays speak to the complexity and depth of 'the hermeneutical problem' in the ecumenical task, offering insights, raising still further questions, and laying the ground for further work.

Book Synopsis A Ministry Shaped by Mission by : Paul D. L. Avis
Download or read book A Ministry Shaped by Mission written by Paul D. L. Avis and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book falls into three symmetrical parts, each of which is subdivided (the subdivisions are listed in the analytical Contents, making a Subject Index redundant). The first part, 'The Mission of God that Shapes our Ministry', draws on the missiological insights of Karl Barth and the Second Vatican Council concerning the missio Dei and directly relates this theme to the tasks entrusted to the Church in 'The Great Commission' of Matthew 28: the ministry of the Word, the celebration of the sacraments and the exercise of pastoral responsibility. It shows how Christians share in the ministry of Christ himself. The second part, 'A Ministry Shaped by the Mission of God', carries the argument forward by clarifying the much abused term 'ministry' and offering a more rigorous and somewhat controversial definition of ministry as work for the Church that is mandated by the Church and explicitly related to its core tasks. Ministers therefore represent both Christ and his Church. The third part, 'Ordained to a Ministry Shaped by Mission', applies the insights of the earlier parts to ordained and lay ministry and offers a cogent answer to the question, What difference does ordination make? The book concludes with an agenda for the reform and development of ministry in the light of the arguments advanced.

Book Synopsis One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic by : Tamara Grdzelidze
Download or read book One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic written by Tamara Grdzelidze and published by World Council of Churches. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic stands in continuity with such ecumenical documents as Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) in examining aspects of ecclesiology-the theological understanding of the church. The chapters consist of contributions by authors from many Christian traditions. Twenty-four theologians and church leaders provide multiple perspectives on the issues of the church's sacramentality, authority and ordained ministry. Drawing on more than seventy-five years of Faith and Order conversations, the book identifies areas of agreement and challenges posed for churches as they seek common ground. This volume traces the next steps in dialogue and provides a resource to aid reception of the results as Christian communities frame their own discussions of what it means to be the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Collins and Michael Fahey present a collection of responses to The Nature and Mission of the Church, a major study on Ecclesiology published by the World Council of Churches in 2006. The study seeks to express common convictions about the Church's nature and mission, and to identify the ecclesiological issues which continue to divide the various branches of the Christian Church today. Stemming from a wide denominational and geographical range of contributors the responses offer doctrinal, theological and hermeneutical perspectives and analysis on the study's formation and content. The book also provides a valuable consideration of the ecumenical ramifications posed and the development of ecumenical ecclesiology in general. This presents a rich and diverse assessment of the issues at hand and strong focus on the future of ecclesiology. (back cover).
