La hipertension arterial es un fenomeno clinico frecuente que afecta a ambos sexos y a todas las edades, pero sobretodo a los adultos mayores de riesgo para la arteriosclerosis, su evaluacion y manejo permite encontrar un dano importante en varios organos, sobre todo como resultado de un tratamiento mal llevado y de la irregularidad. Sin embargo se pone de relieve que si la hipertension es bien controlada, se puede obtener a largo plazo una disminucion importante de la morbilidad y la mortalidad de estos pacientes, que de otra forma es sumamente elevada.
