Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a thematic collection of papers dealing with the Stone Age and Bronze Age archaeology of the Ionian Sea, situated off the south western Balkan peninsula. It is based on an international conference held in Athens, Greece in January 2020. The eastern Ionian occupies a geographically complex area, which since the Pleistocene has undergone significant alterations due to tectonic activity and sea-level fluctuations. This dynamic environment, where islands, mainland, and sea intertwined to present different landscapes and seascapes to the human communities exploring the region at different times in the past, provides an ideal setting for their study from a diachronic perspective. This book deals thematically with the processes of circulation of people, materials, artefacts and ideas by examining patterns of settlement, burial and multi-layered interconnections between the different communities via land and sea. It investigates aspects of regional and interregional communication, isolation, collective memory and the creation of distinct identities within and between different cultural and social groups. It focuses on the islands of the Central Ionian Sea, offering new data from excavations and surveys on Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaki and the smaller islands of the Inner Ionian Archipelago between Lefkada and Akarnania. The cultural interchange between the islands and the continental coasts is reflected in the volume with the addition of chapters dealing with contemporary sites in west Greece and southeast Italy. The Ionian, often regarded as 'at the fringes' of the Aegean, the Balkan and the central Mediterranean archaeological discourse, has lately offered new and exciting data that not only enrich but also alter our perceptions of mobility, settlement and interaction. The collection of papers in this book enhances theoretical discussions by offering a geographically and culturally comparative approach, ranging from the earliest Palaeolithic evidence of human presence in the region to the end of the Bronze Age.

Book excerpt: This book is a very scholarly archaeological detective story. The most eminent archeologists of the past century are the superstars of the detective story -- Heinrich Schliemann, Arthur Evans, and Carl Blegen. Their quest led them through a complicated series of historical puzzles that can be called by the term "Mycenaean Civilization, the fabulous era of Greek prehistory that form the basis for the background of the Homeric poems, "Iliad" and the "Odyssey". This book is a step-by-step full account of their dedicated search to solve on of the great mysteries of antiquity, how Mycenaean civilization grew and flourished and died between 1600 and 1100 BC. The book is completely adheres to and photographs or renders in illustration everyone of their archaeological findings that helped them put the story together. Their work is supported by an enormous bibliography and and extensive index. This detective story leaves us with current theories and references to Homeric poetry to resolve and prove with further archaeological discoveries.

Book excerpt: A careful application of Karl Polanyi's approach to the economies and communities of ancient peoples. Robert Kuttner, in the New York Times Book Review, February 28, 1999, observed that even those on the right have taken up criticism of undermanaged and unrestrained global capitalism. He concluded: "The seminal work in this tradition is Karl Polanyi's 1944 masterpiece, The Great Transformation, which is overdue for rediscovery." Stretching from the Mycenaean Greeks of the second millennium to the Athenians of the fourth century B.C.E., this volume features the work of prominent scholars in the fields of classics, history, and archaeology. The essays stem from the International Karl Polanyi Conference held in Montreal, and from the joint meetings of the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Philological Association. What they have in common is a careful application of Karl Polanyi's approach to economies and communities. They look at how ancient communities generated and managed their resources; how they acquired and how they allocated; and, how they talked about these activities and thereby integrated these activities into their everyday lives. Essays include a study of the Bronze Age site of Glykys Limin in Epirus; the economy of Iron Age Cyprus; the nature of early Greek economic development, with a particular emphasis on a Greek settlement on the mouth of the Nile; traders and the economy of Athens in the fourth century B.C. and the idea of ethnic identity, as much a function of the nineteenth century as of the ancient world itself. Abstracts/Contributors include: Thomas Tartaron, Jeremy McInerney, David W. Rupp, Astrid Moeller, Darrel Tai Engen. David Tandy is Professor of Classics, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN and editor of, with Colin Duncan, From Political Ecology to Anthropology, (Black Rose Books, 1994). Book excerpt: This volume provides a study of the burial mound phenomenon which emerged in large parts of Europe during the Copper and Bronze Ages, with a major focus on the Mediterranean and eastern European regions. 51 papers are grouped into sections dealing with the symbolism of burial mounds, the relationship between landscapes, landmarks and cultural identity, burial customs as rituals and a new look at theories on diffusionism. They define the natural and cultural contexts in which tumulus burial architecture first appeared and attempt to explain the ideological, social and ritual meaning of burial mounds as community monuments. Most contributions include new evidence from excavations and surface surveys; some provide a re-examination of old data, including skeletal remains. The subjects discussed concern not only funerary practices and beliefs but also further archaeological issues such as landscapes and land use, early exploitation of metal resources, the organization of long-distance exchange, interaction networks, and the emergence of complexity in human societies.
