Book excerpt: Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.

Book excerpt: National Emissions Standards - Radon Emissions from Operating Mill Tailings (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the National Emissions Standards - Radon Emissions from Operating Mill Tailings (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking final action to revise certain portions of the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for Radon Emissions from Operating Mill Tailings. The revisions for this final action are based on the EPA's determination as to what constitutes generally available control technology or management practices (GACT) for this area source category. We are also adding new definitions to the NESHAP, revising existing definitions and clarifying that the NESHAP also applies to uranium recovery facilities that extract uranium through the in-situ leach method and the heap leach method. This book contains: - The complete text of the National Emissions Standards - Radon Emissions from Operating Mill Tailings (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

This book was released on 1999-07-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the quality of drinking water, including its concentration of radon, an acknowledged carcinogen. This book presents a valuable synthesis of information about the total inhalation and ingestion risks posed by radon in public drinking water, including comprehensive reviews of data on the transfer of radon from water to indoor air and on outdoor levels of radon in the United States. It also presents a new analysis of a biokinetic model developed to determine the risks posed by ingestion of radon and reviews inhalation risks and the carcinogenesis process. The volume includes scenarios for quantifying the reduction in health risk that might be achieved by a program to reduce public exposure to radon. Risk Assessment of Radon in Drinking Water, reflecting research and analysis mandated by 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act, provides comment on a variety of methods to reduce radon entry into homes and to reduce the concentrations of radon in indoor air and in water. The models, analysis, and reviews of literature contained in this book are intended to provide information that EPA will need to set a new maximum contaminant level, as it is required to do in 2000.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US. Department of Energy (DOE), Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL), is a department, agency, or instrumentality of the executive branch of the Federal Government and must comply with the requirements of the Clean Air Act (CAA) of 1955, as amended, and the implementing regulations. On December 15, 1989, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promulgated in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) the ''National Emission Standards for Emissions of Radionuclides Other Than Radon From Department of Energy Facilities'' (40 CFR Part 61, Subpart H). Subpart H requires that the emissions of radionuclides from any DOE Facility shall not exceed those amounts that would cause any member of the public to receive an effective dose equivalent (EDE) of 10 mrem in a year. In addition, potential emissions of radionuclides from a stack or vent that exceed 0.1 mrem/year to the maximum exposed individual (MEI) require continuous monitoring. The requirement for calculating potential emissions is to compute the emissions, which could occur without control devices in place but with operations otherwise normal. In 1998, an assessment was performed of the Project Hanford Management Contract (PHMC) and Bechtel Hanford, Inc. (BHI) stacks (HNF-1974). Since then, changes have occurred in the location of the MEI, in the status of onsite facilities, in the unit dose factor in closing stacks, in the emissions, and in the addition of new stacks and vents. Because of these changes, an updated assessment was warranted. This assessment provides an update for the 44 stacks on the Hanford Site under management of Fluor Hanford, Inc. (FH) and BHI.
