Book excerpt: Environmental risks associated with large-scale marine finfish cage aquaculture cast doubt on the sustainability of the industry. This book divides the topic into its broad parts: Eutrophication; Sedimentation and Benthic Impacts; Changes in Trophic Structure and Function; and Managing Environmental Risks, and goes further to analyze methods and models currently used to measure near and far-field environmental effects of finfish mariculture and and their implications for management.

Book excerpt: The demand for advanced management methods and tools for marine ecosystems is increasing worldwide. Today, many marine ecosystems are significantly affected by disastrous pollution from industrial, agricultural, municipal, transportational, and other anthropogenic sources. The issues of environmental integrity are especially acute in the Mediterranean and Red Sea basins, the cradle of modern civilization. The drying of the Dead Sea is one of the most vivid examples of environmental disintegration with severe negative consequences on the ecology, industry, and wildlife in the area. Strategic management and coordination of international remedial and restoration efforts is required to improve environmental conditions of marine ecosystems in the Middle East as well as in other areas. The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Nice in October 2003 was designed to: (1) provide a discussion forum for the latest developments in the field of environmentally-conscious strategic management of marine environments, and (2) integrate expertise of ecologists, biologists, economists, and managers from European, American, Canadian, Russian, and Israeli organizations in developing a framework for strategic management of marine ecosystems. The ASI addressed the following issues: Key environmental management problems in exploited marine ecosystems; Measuring and monitoring of municipal, industrial, and agricultural effluents; Global contamination of seawaters and required remedial efforts; Supply Chain Management approach for strategic coastal zones management and planning; Development of environmentally friendly technologies for coastal zone development; Modeling for sustainable aquaculture; and Social, political, and economic challenges in marine ecosystem management.

Book excerpt: This report presents a project outline, completion report, extended abstracts from oral presentations and reviewer's comments arising from a symposium held at the completion of a three year (2000-2003) study (Environmental Studies for Sustainable Aquaculture, or ESSA) conducted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Participants from federal and provincial government departments, the salmon aquaculture industry, universities and the general public met from 27 to 29 January, 2004 at Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth. Presentations summarized research related to assessing potential far field effects of salmon aquaculture. Study sites were located in three areas (Bay d'Espoir in Newfoundland, Letang Inlet in New Brunswick and south-central British Columbia's Broughton Archipelago) where salmon aquaculture is concentrated in Canada. Physical circulation models describing the distribution of dissolved oxygen, nutrients and particulate matter provided a framework for considering chemical and biological variables in water and sediments that might be used as tracers for dispersion of dissolved and particulate wastes from farm sites. The observations were related to habitat management questions that require predictions and advice for monitoring of far field environmental effects of salmon aquaculture. An over-view and summary of research results from science and management perspectives are included.--Document.

Book excerpt: During the period from September 2000 to September 2001 we conducted monthly sediment interfacial and profile sampling at two stations within Lime Kiln Bay. This Bay has been utilized for salmon culture since 1981. Station R was seaward of a bar, which separated the two basins within the bay and station E was located in the inner, landward basin. Both stations were close to salmon lease sites, but were >100 m away from cages and so were not exposed to direct, near-field deposition (waste food, salmon feces) from the cages. Reported here are the monthly results for redox, total sulfide, chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, enzymatically hydrolyzable amino acids, sediment interfacial temperature, sediment profile imaging and macrofaunal community characteristics, for stations R and E.

Book excerpt: The waters of the Indo-Pacific were at the centre of the global expansion of marine capture fisheries in the twentieth century, yet surprisingly little has been written about this subject from a historical perspective. This book, the first major study of the history of fishing in Asia and Oceania, presents the case-studies completed through the History of Marine Animal Populations (HMAP) initiative. It examines the marine environmental history and historical marine ecology of the Indo-Pacific during a period that witnessed the dramatic escalation of industrial fishing in these seas.

Book excerpt: There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before. The trends and developments in science, technology and innovation policy and governance between 2009 and mid-2015 described here provide essential baseline information on the concerns and priorities of countries that could orient the implementation and drive the assessment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the years to come.
