Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2001 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, Note: mdl. 2,2 schriflt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines whether shareholders are sensitive to corporations' environmental footprint. Specifically, we conduct an event study around the announcement of corporate news related to environment for all U.S. publicly-traded companies from 1980 to 2009. We find that companies that are reported to behave responsibly towards the environment experience a significant stock price increase, whereas firms that behave irresponsibly face a significant stock price decrease. When we examine how the stock market reaction has evolved over the past three decades, we find that punishment for corporate irresponsible behavior has increased, while the reward for responsible behavior has decreased. These results indicate that, over time, shareholders have become more conscious of the environment and also more demanding towards companies' environmental responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the value consequences of corporate social responsibility through the lens of institutional shareholders. We find a sharp asymmetry between corporate policies that mitigate the firm's exposure to environmental risk and those that enhance its perceived environmental friendliness (“greenness”). Institutional investors shun stocks with high environmental risk exposure, which we show have lower valuations as predicted by risk management theory. These findings suggest that corporate environmental policies that mitigate environmental risk exposure create shareholder value. In contrast, firms that increase greenness do not create shareholder value and are also shunned by institutional investors.

Book Synopsis The Possible Impacts of "enlightened Shareholder Value" on Corporations' Environmental Performance by : Gail Henderson
Download or read book The Possible Impacts of "enlightened Shareholder Value" on Corporations' Environmental Performance written by Gail Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that "enlightened shareholder value" ("ESV") offers a "third way" between the shareholder primacy and stakeholder theories of the corporation; one that maintains the creation of shareholder value as the corporation's primary function, but requires directors to take into account the environmental impact of the corporations' operations. ESV requires directors to "have regard to", among other things, "the impact of the company's operations on...the environment." The obligation to "have regard to" should be interpreted as a procedural duty requiring directors to inform themselves as to the environmental impact of the corporation's operations, which may in itself cause directors to reallocate corporate resources to environmental protection. ESV may also improve corporations' environmental disclosure and impact social norms of corporate behaviour with respect to the environment. Any negative impact of ESV on present shareholder returns is justified by the obligation to avoid imposing foreseeable severe or irreparable environmental harm on future generations.

Book Synopsis Environmental Protection and the Social Responsibility of Firms by : Bruce L. Hay
Download or read book Environmental Protection and the Social Responsibility of Firms written by Bruce L. Hay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone agrees that firms should obey the law. But beyond what the law requires-beyond bare compliance with regulations-do firms have additional social responsibilities to commit resources voluntarily to environmental protection? How should we think about firms sacrificing profits in the social interest? Are they permitted to do so, given their fiduciary responsibilities to their shareholders? Even if permissible, is the practice sustainable, or will the competitive marketplace render such efforts and their impacts transient at best? Furthermore, is the practice, however well intended, an efficient use of social and economic resources? And, as an empirical matter, to what extent do firms already behave this way? Until now, public discussion has generated more heat than light on both the normative and positive questions surrounding corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the environmental realm. In Environmental Protection and the Social Responsibility of Firms, some of the nation‘s leading scholars in law, economics, and business examine commonly accepted assumptions at the heart of current debates on corporate social responsibility and provide a foundation for future research and policymaking.
