Book excerpt: This document is intended to assist farm operators to avoid or minimize environmental impacts. It outlines B.C. Ministry of Environment (MoE) regulatory requirements and procedures which should be followed by all operators. Together with the Ministry's Environmental Monitoring Program for Marine Fish Farms and the Aquaculture Waste Control Regulation, it should help to ensure that environmental concerns under MoE jurisdiction are addressed and the industry is treated by MoE in a manner which is fair and consistent with other waste generating coastal activities. MoE emphasizes appropriate siting, acceptable waste management and other operational practices, and environmental monitoring at all farms to determine whether or not environmental impacts are occurring or are likely to occur. In addition, MoE is engaged in or supporting several studies into potential environmental impacts associated with marine fish farming.

Book excerpt: This book provides a scientific forecast of development in aquaculture with a focus on the environmental, technological, social and economic constraints that need to be resolved to ensure sustainable development of the industry and allow the industry to be able to feed healthy seafood products to future generations. The chapters discuss the most critical bottlenecks of the development. They encompass subjects of understanding the environmental impacts, the current state-of-the-art in monitoring programs and in coastal zone management, the important interactions between wild and cultured organisms including release of non-native species into the wild.

Book excerpt: Reports of closed beaches, restricted shellfish beds, oil spills, and ailing fisheries are some of the recent evidence that our marine environment is in trouble. More than $133 million is spent on marine environmental monitoring annually in the United States, but officials still do not have enough accurate information to make timely decisions about protecting our waters. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of marine monitoring, providing practical information and a model for revamping the nation's marine monitoring apparatus. The volume explores current monitoring programs and whether or not they work; the benefits and limitations of monitoring; the critical need for greater coordination among local, regional, and national monitoring programs; and a recommended conceptual model for developing more effective monitoring programs.

Book excerpt: Environmental Monitoring theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Environmental and Ecological Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme on Environmental Monitoring is largely concerned with strategies in the preparation of environmental impact assessments, as well as in many circumstances in which human activities carry a risk of harmful effects on the natural environment.. All monitoring strategies and programmes on environment have reasons and justifications which are often designed to establish the current status of an environment or to establish trends in environmental parameters. The content of the Theme provides the essential aspects and a myriad of issues that are great relevance to our world with respect to environmental monitoring. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs

Book excerpt: From the reviews: "This is now the definitive, authoritative text on applied foraminiferal micropaleontology and should be in the library of all practicing micropaleontologists." (William A. Berggren, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Micropaleontology, 47:1 (2001)"During the last 20 years there has been an explosion of publications about foraminifera from an amazing variety of disciplines: basic cell biology, algal symbiosis, biomineralization, biogeography, ecology, pollution, chemical oceanography, geochemistry, paleoceanography, and geology. This book summarizes contributions by leading researchers in these diverse fields. It is not just another text on the biology of foraminifera. Rather, Barun Sen Gupta has accomplished his objective to "write an advanced text for university students that would also serve as a reference book for professionals"." (Howard J. Spero, University of California at Davis in Limnology and Oceanography, 45:8 (2000).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2006, the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (NS DFA) reported on the results of their Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) for the marine aquaculture industry from 2003 to 2005. For regulatory purposes, total dissolved sulphide levels in sediments are the main parameter used to determine direct impact of an aquaculture operation. Monitoring results (2003-2005) indicated that only a few finfish monitoring stations reported sulphide levels in the B - hypoxic (polluted) category and one station reported sulphides in the C - anoxic (grossly polluted) range. Virtually all of the shellfish sites reported sulphides in the A - oxic (normal) range. An update on sulphide monitoring results for finfish aquacultures sites from 2006 to 2011 indicated a significant increase in the number of finfish monitoring stations reporting B - hypoxic (or polluted) and C - hypoxic (or grossly polluted) conditions compared to the 2003-2005 monitoring period. The results also indicated that overall environmental quality associated with finfish sites had decreased since the 2003-2005 reporting period. The effectiveness of NS DFA's new 2011 Environmental Monitoring Program Framework to ensure aquaculture sites maintain oxic levels has yet to be demonstrated or evaluated"--Summary.

This book divides the topic into its broad parts: Eutrophication; Sedimentation and Benthic Impacts; Changes in Trophic Structure and Function; and Managing Environmental Risks, and goes further to analyze methods and models currently used to measure near and far-field environmental effects of finfish mariculture and and their implications for management.

Book excerpt: This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Methodologies are presented for the assessment and monitoring of environmental hazards and impacts of coastal aquaculture. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.
