Book Synopsis Health and Sustainability in the Canadian Food System by : Rod MacRae
Download or read book Health and Sustainability in the Canadian Food System written by Rod MacRae and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil society organizations are among the most vociferous critics of the modern food system. Yet even after decades of campaigns, governments have failed to address health and sustainability issues in a systematic way. New approaches are in order, and this volume showcases the research of experts from various disciplines who argue that solutions lie not just in lobbying elected officials but rather in initiatives at the subparliamentary level. Case studies on a range of topics, from breastfeeding and sustainable pest management promotion to programs such as Canada’s Action Plan on Food Security, tell a story of misguided campaigns and missed opportunities. Real change, this inspiring volume suggests, is possible. It will come when advocacy groups develop innovative strategies of influencing decision makers more resistant to public pressure: business lobbies well connected to government agencies, middle managers, and ministries unused to collaborating across departmental mandates.

Book excerpt: In farming systems across Canada, effective risk management is necessary to deal with drought, flooding, and extreme weather, and to adapt to altered climate and weather conditions. Unfortunately, climate change risks and opportunities are not always well understood among researchers and policy makers in the Canadian agri-food sector. This book addresses that gap by providing a wide-ranging synopsis of what climate change means for Canadian agriculture, exploring different approaches to the topic, and presenting examples of current research. It covers all agricultural regions and a wide variety of commodity production and farming systems. This comprehensive survey synthesizes twenty years of research on climate change and Canadian agriculture.

Book Synopsis Agricultural Policies and Soil Degradation in Western Canada by : Aziz Bouzaher
Download or read book Agricultural Policies and Soil Degradation in Western Canada written by Aziz Bouzaher and published by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Policy Branch. This book was released on 1994 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated agro-ecological economic modeling system is being constructed around the Canadian Regional Agriculture Model (CRAM) for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. As an initial application, and to test its performance, the system was used to evaluate the resource neutrality of the Gross Revenue Insurance Program (GRIP) in the Prairie Provinces. The report discusses the interactions between the major system components of agricultural decision (RS-CRAM) and environmental decision; imposes the policy scenario being simulated on RS-CRAM, where management decisions are simulated based on expected producer response to risk and options available in the input substitution component; interfaces management parameters such as tillage level, crop, and crop sequence from RS-CRAM with the environmental metamodels; and then performs an analysis to evaluate the overall economic and environmental impacts of the simulated policy scenario.

Through various initiatives, AAFC strives to strengthen linkages between the three pillars to ensure a seamless approach to sustainable development. The fourth SDS highlights the ongoing implementation of the Agricultural Policy Framework and illustrates how the Department integrates sustainable development into decision-making. The SDS also helps lay the groundwork for the next generation of agricultural policies and programs. This book was released on 1998-03-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The socio-economic development of rural areas has become an important issue for agricultural policy design in many OECD countries. Yet there is still a lack of comprehensive analysis of the inter-linkages between the agro-food sector and the rural economy. What consequences have ongoing structural changes in agriculture have for rural areas? What is the role of agricultural policies? This report, comprising a main report and case studies on Canada, France, Greece, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland, addresses these questions. How to strike the right balance between the need for greater economic efficiency, and social and environmental concerns in rural areas is a key challenge facing policy makers.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural decision makers at all levels require good quality information to address complex economic and environmental issues. In response, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has developed a set of science-based agri-environmental indicators that integrate information on soils, climate and topography with statistics on land use and crop and livestock management practices. The indicators provide valuable information on the overall environmental risks and conditions in agriculture and how these change over time. The indices are presented here to draw broad, national-level observations on the status and trends of agrienvironmental sustainability of the agriculture and agri-food sector. The regional variations are more explicitly discussed in the body of the report. This publication can be used as a report card of agri-environmental performance for producers, consumers and the international community and can be used to highlight areas where further efforts are required. It can also provide valuable information that decision makers can draw from when developing and evaluating agricultural policy.--Document.
