Knowledge of these mechanisms is a vital component in performing a risk assessment. Volume I will deal with the physical and chemical properties of a material and how these influence the degradation and dissipating reactions. Volume 2 will address the transport of the chemical as it moves through the environment from the source to the final sink.

This book was released on 1997-07-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determining the health risks to humans of exposure to toxic substances in the environment is made difficult by problems such as measuring the degree to which people have been exposed and determining causationâ€"whether observed health effects are due to exposure to a suspected toxicant. Building on the well-received first volume, Environmental Epidemiology: Hazardous Wastes and Public Health, this second volume continues the examination of ways to address these difficulties. It describes effective epidemiological methods for analyzing data and focuses on errors that may occur in the course of analyses. The book also investigates the utility of the gray literature in helping to identify the often elusive causative agent behind reported health effects. Although gray literature studies are often based on a study group that is quite small, use inadequate measures of exposure, and are not published, many of the reports from about 20 states that were examined by the committee were judged to be publishable with some additional work. The committee makes recommendations to improve the utility of the gray literature by enhancing quality and availability.

Book excerpt: In order to assess the health and environmental effects of a chemical, you need to determine the exposure of the chemical to sensitive organisms as well as to assess the likely effects. The chemicals in Volume V of the Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals set are mostly solvents and cover many of the natural products and hydrochlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons being considered as replacements for harmful chlorinated solvents and chlorofluorocarbons. The chemicals are listed in alphabetical order by their most easily recognized names. A cumulative index allows you to look up each chemical by chemical name synonym, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, and chemical formula. Like all of the volumes in the series, this new volume details how individual chemicals are released, transported, and degraded in the environment, as well as how they are exposed to humans and environmental organisms. Features Provides useful information for hazardous waste cleanup Helps you to make exposure assessments Provides workplace exposure and ambient monitoring data as well as detection in foods Includes information on environmental persistence and transport Includes highly reliable data prepared by a well-known firm in environmental fate

Book excerpt: This completely updated edition of Exposure Assessment in Environmental Epidemiology offers a practical introduction to exposure assessment methodologies in environmental epidemiologic studies. In addition to methods for traditional methods -- questionnaires, biomonitoring -- this new edition is expanded to include geographic information systems, modeling, personal sensoring, remote sensing, and OMICs technologies. In addition, each of these methods is contextualized within a recent epidemiology study, maximizing illustration for students and those new to these to these techniques. With clear writing and extensive illustration, this book will be useful to anyone interested in exposure assessment, regardless of background.

Book excerpt: This book provides concise and cutting-edge studies on threats resulting from exposure to environmental chemicals that can affect human health and development, with a particular emphasis on the DOHaD concept. The book is divided into five main parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the impacts of developmental exposure to environmental chemicals and historical perspectives, while the second focuses on how environmental chemicals can affect human organs, including neurodevelopment, immune functions, etc. In turn, the third part addresses the characteristics of specific chemicals and their effects on human health and development, while the fourth part provides a basis for future studies by highlighting the latest innovations in toxicology, remaining challenges, and promising strategies in children’s environmental health research, as well as ideas on how to bridge the gap between research evidence and practical policymaking. The fifth and last part outlines further research directions and related policymaking aspects. Health Impacts of Developmental Exposure to Environmental Chemicals will appeal to young and veteran researchers, students, and physicians (especially gynecologists and pediatricians) who are seeking comprehensive information on how children’s health can be affected by harmful chemicals and other environmental toxicants.
