Book excerpt: The pertinent literature on the effects of the environment on the performance of epoxy matrix composites is surveyed with emphasis on information useful to the designer. The topics surveyed include (a) the moisture absorption and desorption characteristics of single and multilayered composites exposed both to steady and to transient ambients, and (b) the resulting changes in tensile strength, elastic moduli, fatigue, creep, stress rupture, and response to dynamic impact. Sources of available analytical results and test data are identified, and areas in need of further investigation are indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of polymeric matrix composite materials in marine environments has been experimentally investigated. Carbon/epoxy, carbon/bismaleimeide-epoxy, glass/epoxy and glass/PPS, and neat PPS were examined. The environments considered were distilled water and natural seawater at room temperature and 35°C. Water absorption was monitored during seven months of immersion. Several specimen geometries were investigated which allowed determination of longitudinal and transverse diffusivities. Degradation of mechanical performance due to water absorption was examined through transverse tension testing of dry and wet composites. The transverse modulus of the thermoset composites remained virtually unaffected by water absorption, while the modulus of glass/PPS dropped substantially, apparently due to extensive fiber/matrix debonding induced by water absorption. Transverse tensile strength was drastically reduced after water absorption for all composites. The composites degraded similarly in distilled water and seawater. Inspection of the fracture surfaces of dry and wet composites in a scanning electron microscope indicated that fiber/matrix adhesion was adequate in the dry composites, while in the wet composites numerous bare debonded fibers were observed, which substantiates that the reduction in transverse strength is largely due to fiber/matrix interfacial degradation.

Book excerpt: Aerospace and naval applications of polymers in conditions once thought too harsh for them, take center stage in the survey of how polymer composites react to environmental conditions. A dozen papers from a symposium in San Diego, October 1991, describe damage mechanisms and failure, materials behavior under combined effects, and constitutive models, sometimes considering polymers as a whole, but more often specific groups or composites. Book excerpt: The effect of absorbed moisture on the mechanical properties of a neat epoxy resin and derived graphite/epoxy composites is investigated. Glass transition temperature and modulus as a function of moisture content and temperature is determined for both the neat resin and composite. In addition, elastic modulus for the neat resin, and strength and elastic moduli for unidirectional composites and quasi-isotropic laminates are determined as a function of absorbed moisture and temperature. A method for predicting moisture content and through-the-thickness profile for a laminate exposed to a constant humidity and temperature is discussed. Particular attention is also given to the details of environmental testing. Data indicates that absorbed moisture and temperature effects on the neat resin translate directly to matrix dominated properties of the composite and can lead to a change in failure mode, while filament dominated properties show very little environmental sensitivity. Results also indicate that resin glass transition temperature is a function of processing as well absorbed moisture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the research results on space environmental effects including vacuum, temperature, and radiation on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), stiffness, creep, and material damping in graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy composite laminates, obtained over the period 1 November 1981 to 31 October 1982 under AFOSR-78-3694 funding. This submission is intended to supplement the previous three annual reports and thus should be read in context with those documents. The main accomplishments in this 12 month period have been in the study of UV and electron radiation effects on composites in a thermo-vacuum environment, and the development and experimental validation of viscoelastic and laminate damping models for composites. In hard vacuum, matrix stiffness increases over a wide temperature range, matrix creep compliance and material damping decrease, and CTE changes depending on laminate configuration. Combined UV radiation in hard vacuum along with some Beta-radiation testing produced only minor variation in matrix stiffness, creep compliance, and CTE iwth exposures up to 300 equivalent solar days. Thermal-vacuum cycling resulted in matrix stiffness and tensile strength reduction, and CTE drift. Laminate models used were quite accurate in predicting CTE, damping, creep, and strength of arbitrary laminate configurations based on material property data obtained under different environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: The program was designed to assess the effects of temperature and absorbed moisture on the static compression behavior of epoxy matrix composites under loading conditions wherein the dominant failure modes are those which occur in structural applications. Compression test fixtures providing varying degrees of geometrical constraint were employed in order to conduct a complete series of column tests ranging from perfectly elastic to fully restrained. Two graphite/epoxy materials were evaluated, T300/5208 and AS/3501-5A. Both longitudinal and transverse orientations of three specimen types, a 0-degree unidirectional, a quasi-isotropic and a 67%-0-degree laminate were evaluated at four temperatures, -54 C ( -65 F), 22 C (72 F), 93 C (200 F) and 135 C (275 F) after exposure to one of two environmental conditions: dry, (22 C (72 F) and 40% R.H.) and wet (82 C (180 F) and 90% R.H.). Both materials were characterized under static-tension and shear loading and Tg, thermal expansion and moisture distributions were determined. Analytical procedures for predicting the column buckling behavior under various conditions were developed. Elastic buckling of the laminates investigated were relatively unaffected by moisture and temperature. The inelastic buckling curve revealed a drop due to moisture and temperature which was dependent upon material and laminate type. (Author).
