Book Synopsis When We're Sixty-Four by : Rafael Rofman
Download or read book When We're Sixty-Four written by Rafael Rofman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American countries are in the midst of a demographic transition and, as a consequence, a population-aging process. Over the next few decades, the number of children will decline relative to the number of older adults. Population aging is the result of a slow but sustained reduction in mortality rates, given increases in life expectancy and fertility. These trends reflect welcome long-term improvements in welfare and in economic and social development. But this process also entails policy challenges: many public institutions—including education, health, and pension systems and labor market regulations—are designed for a different demographic context and will need to be adapted. When We’re Sixty-Four discusses public policies aimed at overcoming the two main challenges facing Latin American countries concerning the changing demographics. On one hand, older populations demand more fiscal resources for social services, such as health, long-term care, and pensions. On the other, population aging produces shifts in the proportion of the population that is working age, which may affect long-term economic growth. Aging societies risk losing dynamism, being exposed to higher dependency rates, and experiencing lower savings rates. Nonetheless, in the interim, Latin American countries have a demographic opportunity: a temporary decline in dependency rates creates a period in which the share of the working-age population, with its associated saving capacity, is at its highest levels. This constitutes a great opportunity in the short term because the higher savings may result in increases in capital endowment per worker and productivity. For that to happen, it is necessary to generate institutional, financial, and fiscal conditions that promote larger savings and investment, accelerating per capita economic growth in a sustainable way.
Book Synopsis Aging in the Global South by : Maria Carinnes P. Alejandria
Download or read book Aging in the Global South written by Maria Carinnes P. Alejandria and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of work on aging and development from authors from the global south. Aging is steadily evolving as a public health and social crisis for which countries of the global south are ill-prepared. The forces of development and improved public health services have ensured that human being live longer. But there is enough evidence that such longevity do not commensurate with good health. As such, many countries of the global south are seeing a booming population who are aging in poor health, without the necessary safety net to ensure quality of life. This book discusses work from Asia, Africa, and South America to explore the challenges facing older adults. Topics include: aging in institutions, living arrangements of older adults, food insecurity, social isolation, end of life migration, and policy papers. This is the first book to bring together varied perspectives on the situation of older adults, and the challenges and opportunities that lie in developing innovative, sustainable programs to support elderly care services.
Book Synopsis Environmental Gerontology in Europe and Latin America by : Diego Sánchez-González
Download or read book Environmental Gerontology in Europe and Latin America written by Diego Sánchez-González and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the relationships between the physical-social environment and the elderly in Europe and Latin America, from the Environmental Gerontology perspective and through geographical and psychosocial approaches. It addresses the main environmental issues of population ageing, based on an understanding of the complex relationships, adjustments and adaptations between different environments (home, residence, public spaces, landscapes, neighbourhoods, urban and rural environment) and the quality of life of the ageing population, associated with residential strategies and other aspects related to health and dependency. The different levels of socio-spatial analysis are also explored: macro (urban and rural environments, regions and landscapes), meso (neighbourhood, public space) and micro (personal, home and institution). New theoretical and methodological approaches are proposed to analyse the attributes and functions of the physical-social environment of the elderly, as well as new ways of living the ageing process. All will have to respond to the challenges of urbanisation, globalisation and climate change in the 21st century. Also, the different experiences and challenges of public planning and management professionals involved with the growing ageing population are presented, and will require greater association and collaboration with the academic and scientific fields of Environmental Gerontology.
Book Synopsis Ageing, Physical Activity and Health by : Karin Volkwein-Caplan
Download or read book Ageing, Physical Activity and Health written by Karin Volkwein-Caplan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most pressing questions facing society today is how to care for its burgeoning elderly population. By the year 2050, experts predict that one-third of the world’s population will be over 60 years old. Health promotion for the elderly is therefore becoming an increasingly important topic in public policy and planning. This book examines the challenges presented by an ageing global population, our varying expectations of healthy ageing, and the importance of exercise and physical activity for the elderly. Drawing on empirical research from around the world, it considers the factors that influence health and well-being in later life and compares practices and policies designed to promote healthy ageing. It presents case studies from 15 countries spanning Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia, and sheds light on how attitudes to physical activity differ across nations, regions and cultures. Ageing, Physical Activity and Health: International Perspectives is important reading for all students, researchers and practitioners with an interest in physical activity, public health, exercise science or gerontology.

Book Synopsis Towards the sustainability of the Mexican National Health System by : Yessica Pamela Flores Subias
Download or read book Towards the sustainability of the Mexican National Health System written by Yessica Pamela Flores Subias and published by Editorial Fontamara S. A. de C. V.. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was oriented towards achieving two main objectives. The first of them was to create a description of the main changes that have been made to the system since the beginning of the 2018-2024 Administration in Mexico. The diversity of the reforms and their scope make it difficult for the population to follow up on them and know how their right to health protection will be guaranteed. Thus, understanding the impact and extension of the reforms was one of the priorities of this study. Consequently, it was sought to develop a consultation document that allows identifying the current state of the SNS. The World Health Organization (who) has pointed out that health systems comprise all the institutions, organizations and resources used to produce actions aimed at improving health. Its performance can be measured based on its ability to respond to the needs of the population through actions such as increasing equality in access to health, reducing health risks and protecting individuals from the financial consequences caused by hight costs deseases. In this way, it is imperative that health systems have an efficient design that allows guaranteeing the protection of the right to health.
