Book Synopsis Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place by : National Research Council
Download or read book Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-16 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The usefulness of the U.S. decennial census depends critically on the accuracy with which individual people are counted in specific housing units, at precise geographic locations. The 2000 and other recent censuses have relied on a set of residence rules to craft instructions on the census questionnaire in order to guide respondents to identify their correct "usual residence." Determining the proper place to count such groups as college students, prisoners, and military personnel has always been complicated and controversial; major societal trends such as placement of children in shared custody arrangements and the prevalence of "snowbird" and "sunbird" populations who regularly move to favorable climates further make it difficult to specify ties to one household and one place. Once, Only Once, and in the Right Place reviews the evolution of current residence rules and the way residence concepts are presented to respondents. It proposes major changes to the basic approach of collecting residence information and suggests a program of research to improve the 2010 and future censuses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of 2003 through the first quarter of 2006, real gross domestic product in the U.S. grew at an average annual rate of 3.4% As expected, unemployment during the period fell. Over the course of the next year, average growth slowed to less than half its earlier rate -- but unemployment continued to drift downward. This situation presented a puzzle, who expected the unemployment rate to increase as the economy slowed. This negative correlation between GDP growth & unemployment has been named ¿Okun¿s law.¿ This article considers the usefulness of Okun¿s law for policymakers & economists. Okun¿s relationship can be useful as a forecasting tool -- provided that one takes its instability into account. Charts & tables.
Book Synopsis Modeling of Photochemical Reactions in a Focused Laser Beam by : A. K. Gaigalas
Download or read book Modeling of Photochemical Reactions in a Focused Laser Beam written by A. K. Gaigalas and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescent materials play a prominent role in the measurement of scientific phenomena. Photodegradation of fluorophores is a process that determines the accuracy and sensitivity of such measurements. Recently, illumination consisting of short pulses has been used to examine the decay of photochemical reaction products. However, the time resolved measurements are difficult to interpret since the photodegradation process usually involves multiple time scales. The frequency domain measurement technique discussed here looks at the frequency response of a fluorescent sample to a frequency modulate illuminating light. In the measurements described here, a focused laser beam is used to illuminate a sample of slowly flowing fluorescent solution. Illus.
