Emotionale Kompetenz hilft in der Interaktion mit anderen, in persönlichen Beziehungen, im Berufsleben und sie hat Einfluss auf eine positive schulische Entwicklung. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der emotionalen Entwicklung von Säuglingen und Kleinkindern und zeigt Fördermöglichkeiten auf, die sich den Eltern bieten, um die emotionale Entwicklung bei ihren Kindern bestmöglich zu begleiten. Zu Beginn kläre ich den Terminus Emotion und erläutere den Unterschied zwischen primären und sekundären Emotionen. In diesem Zusammenhang werde ich auf die Entstehung von Emotionen eingehen, indem ich zuerst die Emotionen bei Säuglingen betrachte und dann zu den Emotionen bei Kleinkindern übergehe. Darauffolgend werde ich die Entwicklung von Emotionsregulationsstrategien anhand von verschiedenen Phasen, die durchlaufen werden, erläutern. Am Ende meiner Arbeit stelle ich Handlungsmöglichkeiten für Eltern vor, da diese in den ersten Lebensjahren eines Kindes den größten Einfluss auf die emotionalen Fertigkeiten der Kinder haben. Diese Möglichkeiten sollen Hilfestellungen sein, mit denen Eltern ihren Kindern zu einem emotional kompetenten Verhalten verhelfen.

Wahrscheinlich hat sich jeder Mensch schon einmal die Frage gestellt, wie diese Emotionen ausgelöst werden und wie es überhaupt dazu kommt, dass wir diese ausdrücken und anderen damit etwas vermitteln können. Es bestehen mehrere Emotionstheorien, welche alle auf ihre Art zu erklären versuchen, wie Emotionen entstehen, wie sie sich auswirken und wodurch sie überhaupt verursacht werden. Der Evolutionsbiologische Ansatz betrachtet die Emotionen als ein Ergebnis der Entstehungsgeschichte und stellt sich die Frage, ob Emotionen erblich sind und inwiefern sie einen Wert für das Überleben eines Individuums haben. Für Darwin waren Emotionen bewusste, mentale Zustände, welche durch Einschätzung und Bewertung von Situationen, Objekten und Einstellungen entstehen. Außerdem war er der Meinung, dass der Emotionsausdruck und die Fähigkeit, diesen zuerkennen, vererbt sind.

Und was ware die Welt ohne das Lacheln der Kinder? Durch mein Praktikum im Kindergarten wunderte ich mich taglich, wie vielseitig, wandelbar und auch wie sensibel die emotionale Welt der Kinder ist. Vom einen zum nachsten Augenblick verwandeln sich Tranen in befreites Lachen oder das Lachen in Arger und in nahezu unkontrolliertes Schreien. Ich versuchte, dies durch genaues Beobachten zu begreifen und machte es folglich zum Thema meiner Arbeit. Die passende Literatur fand ich, neben einigen Missgriffen, nahezu vollstandig in der Wurttembergischen Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart. Bei den Missgriffen handelte es sich eher um Elternratgeber und Padagogische Lehrbucher, die die psychologischen Aspekte des Themas zu kurz behandelten. Mit dem Lehrbuch "Entwicklungspsychologie" von Rolf Oerter konnte ich mir, meiner Meinung nach, eine gute und prazise Basis aufbauen. Die restliche von mir gelesene sowie auch benutzte Literatur war allzu oft zu stark durch vorherrschende Theorien gepragt, die es nur schwer erlaubten, eine Basiszusammenfassung des Themas zuzulassen, nach der ich jedoch strebte.

The complexity of emotional change, when grasped, will reveal the elusive nature of development itself. At the outset, we know that development is complex. We must take seriously what is present at any given phase, including the newborn period, because a developmental analysis disallows something emerging from noth ing. Still, it is equally nondevelopmental to posit that new forms of new processes were simply present in their precursors. Rather, development is characterized by transformations in which more complex structures and organization "emerge" from new integration of prior components and new capacities. These new forms and organizations cannot be specified from prior conditions but are due to transactions of the evolving organism with its environment over time. They are not simply in the genome, and they are not simply conditioned by the environment. They are the result of the develop mental process.
