Book excerpt: This monograph, by now a standard reference in the field, provides a complete overview of quantum entropy theory, from the early days of quantum mechanics up to the most recent developments. It employs mathematical formalism based on operator theory and functional analysis with a goal of creating a comprehensive account of the different entropy concepts, their interrelations and use. Among the ideas discussed are entropy of a quantum state, relative entropy, mutual entropy, entropy of a coarse graining and dynamical entropy. Numerous fundamental properties of quantum information measurement are developed, including the von Neumann entropy of a statistical operator and its limiting normalized version, the entropy rate. Use of quantum-entropy quantities is made in perturbation theory, central limit theorems, thermodynamics of spin systems, entropic uncertainty relations, and optical communication. Book Synopsis Entropy in Foundations of Quantum Physics by : Marcin Pawłowski
Download or read book Entropy in Foundations of Quantum Physics written by Marcin Pawłowski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of outstanding papers on various aspects of entropy at the foundation of quantum physics. The covered topics range from purely foundational issues such as contextuality and Bell and Leggett–Garg inequalities to applications such as quantum key distribution, teleportation, and image encoding. The main ingredient binding them together in this book is that in all of the contained papers, entropy plays a key role either as a mathematical tool or as a link which bridges the gap between different fields of science.
Book Synopsis The Biggest Ideas in the Universe by : Sean Carroll
Download or read book The Biggest Ideas in the Universe written by Sean Carroll and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Most appealing... technical accuracy and lightness of tone... Impeccable.”—Wall Street Journal “A porthole into another world.”—Scientific American “Brings science dissemination to a new level.”—Science The most trusted explainer of the most mind-boggling concepts pulls back the veil of mystery that has too long cloaked the most valuable building blocks of modern science. Sean Carroll, with his genius for making complex notions entertaining, presents in his uniquely lucid voice the fundamental ideas informing the modern physics of reality. Physics offers deep insights into the workings of the universe but those insights come in the form of equations that often look like gobbledygook. Sean Carroll shows that they are really like meaningful poems that can help us fly over sierras to discover a miraculous multidimensional landscape alive with radiant giants, warped space-time, and bewilderingly powerful forces. High school calculus is itself a centuries-old marvel as worthy of our gaze as the Mona Lisa. And it may come as a surprise the extent to which all our most cutting-edge ideas about black holes are built on the math calculus enables. No one else could so smoothly guide readers toward grasping the very equation Einstein used to describe his theory of general relativity. In the tradition of the legendary Richard Feynman lectures presented sixty years ago, this book is an inspiring, dazzling introduction to a way of seeing that will resonate across cultural and generational boundaries for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years enormous effort was invested in proving ergodicity, but for a number of reasons, con?dence in the fruitfulness of this approach has waned. — Y. Ben-Menahem and I. Pitowsky [1] Abstract The basic motivation behind the present text is threefold: To give a new explanation for the emergence of thermodynamics, to investigate the interplay between quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, and to explore possible ext- sions of the common validity range of thermodynamics. Originally, thermodynamics has been a purely phenomenological science. Early s- entists (Galileo, Santorio, Celsius, Fahrenheit) tried to give de?nitions for quantities which were intuitively obvious to the observer, like pressure or temperature, and studied their interconnections. The idea that these phenomena might be linked to other ?elds of physics, like classical mechanics, e.g., was not common in those days. Such a connection was basically introduced when Joule calculated the heat equ- alent in 1840 showing that heat was a form of energy, just like kinetic or potential energy in the theory of mechanics. At the end of the 19th century, when the atomic theory became popular, researchers began to think of a gas as a huge amount of bouncing balls inside a box.

Book Synopsis Entropy and the Quantum II by : Robert Sims
Download or read book Entropy and the Quantum II written by Robert Sims and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the Entropy and the Quantum schools has been to introduce young researchers to some of the exciting current topics in mathematical physics. These topics often involve analytic techniques that can easily be understood with a dose of physical intuition. In March of 2010, four beautiful lectures were delivered on the campus of the University of Arizona. They included Isoperimetric Inequalities for Eigenvalues of the Laplacian by Rafael Benguria, Universality of Wigner Random Matrices by Laszlo Erdos, Kinetic Theory and the Kac Master Equation by Michael Loss, and Localization in Disordered Media by Gunter Stolz. Additionally, there were talks by other senior scientists and a number of interesting presentations by junior participants. The range of the subjects and the enthusiasm of the young speakers are testimony to the great vitality of this field, and the lecture notes in this volume reflect well the diversity of this school.

Book Synopsis Complexity, Entropy And The Physics Of Information by : Wojciech H. Zurek
Download or read book Complexity, Entropy And The Physics Of Information written by Wojciech H. Zurek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has emerged from a meeting held during the week of May 29 to June 2, 1989, at St. John’s College in Santa Fe under the auspices of the Santa Fe Institute. The (approximately 40) official participants as well as equally numerous “groupies” were enticed to Santa Fe by the above “manifesto.” The book—like the “Complexity, Entropy and the Physics of Information” meeting explores not only the connections between quantum and classical physics, information and its transfer, computation, and their significance for the formulation of physical theories, but it also considers the origins and evolution of the information-processing entities, their complexity, and the manner in which they analyze their perceptions to form models of the Universe. As a result, the contributions can be divided into distinct sections only with some difficulty. Indeed, I regard this degree of overlapping as a measure of the success of the meeting. It signifies consensus about the important questions and on the anticipated answers: they presumably lie somewhere in the “border territory,” where information, physics, complexity, quantum, and computation all meet.

Book Synopsis Maximum Entropy, Information Without Probability and Complex Fractals by : Guy Jumarie

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every thought is a throw of dice. Stephane Mallarme This book is the last one of a trilogy which reports a part of our research work over nearly thirty years (we discard our non-conventional results in automatic control theory and applications on the one hand, and fuzzy sets on the other), and its main key words are Information Theory, Entropy, Maximum Entropy Principle, Linguistics, Thermodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, Fractals, Fractional Brownian Motion, Stochastic Differential Equations of Order n, Stochastic Optimal Control, Computer Vision. Our obsession has been always the same: Shannon's information theory should play a basic role in the foundations of sciences, but subject to the condition that it be suitably generalized to allow us to deal with problems which are not necessarily related to communication engineering. With this objective in mind, two questions are of utmost importance: (i) How can we introduce meaning or significance of information in Shannon's information theory? (ii) How can we define and/or measure the amount of information involved in a form or a pattern without using a probabilistic scheme? It is obligatory to find suitable answers to these problems if we want to apply Shannon's theory to science with some chance of success. For instance, its use in biology has been very disappointing, for the very reason that the meaning of information is there of basic importance, and is not involved in this approach.

Book Synopsis Holographic Entanglement Entropy by : Mukund Rangamani
Download or read book Holographic Entanglement Entropy written by Mukund Rangamani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in the field of holographic entanglement entropy. Within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, it is shown how quantum entanglement is computed by the area of certain extremal surfaces. The general lessons one can learn from this connection are drawn out for quantum field theories, many-body physics, and quantum gravity. An overview of the necessary background material is provided together with a flavor of the exciting open questions that are currently being discussed. The book is divided into four main parts. In the first part, the concept of entanglement, and methods for computing it, in quantum field theories is reviewed. In the second part, an overview of the AdS/CFT correspondence is given and the holographic entanglement entropy prescription is explained. In the third part, the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in out-of-equilibrium systems, and applications to many body physics are explored using holographic methods. The last part focuses on the connection between entanglement and geometry. Known constraints on the holographic map, as well as, elaboration of entanglement being a fundamental building block of geometry are explained. The book is a useful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in string theory and holography, condensed matter and quantum information, as it tries to connect these different subjects linked by the common theme of quantum entanglement.
Download or read book Maxwell's Demon written by Harvey S. Leff and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 120 years ago, James Clerk Maxwell introduced his now legendary hypothetical "demon" as a challenge to the integrity of the second law of thermodynamics. Fascination with the demon persisted throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, information theory, and computer science--and linkages have been established between Maxwell's demon and each of these disciplines. The demon's seductive quality makes it appealing to physical scientists, engineers, computer scientists, biologists, psychologists, and historians and philosophers of science. Until now its important source material has been scattered throughout diverse journals. This book brings under one cover twenty-five reprints, including seminal works by Maxwell and William Thomson; historical reviews by Martin Klein, Edward Daub, and Peter Heimann; information theoretic contributions by Leo Szilard, Leon Brillouin, Dennis Gabor, and Jerome Rothstein; and innovations by Rolf Landauer and Charles Bennett illustrating linkages with the limits of computation. An introductory chapter summarizes the demon's life, from Maxwell's illustration of the second law's statistical nature to the most recent "exorcism" of the demon based on a need periodically to erase its memory. An annotated chronological bibliography is included. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Book Synopsis John von Neumann and the Foundations of Quantum Physics by : Miklós Rédei
Download or read book John von Neumann and the Foundations of Quantum Physics written by Miklós Rédei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John von Neumann (1903-1957) was undoubtedly one of the scientific geniuses of the 20th century. The main fields to which he contributed include various disciplines of pure and applied mathematics, mathematical and theoretical physics, logic, theoretical computer science, and computer architecture. Von Neumann was also actively involved in politics and science management and he had a major impact on US government decisions during, and especially after, the Second World War. There exist several popular books on his personality and various collections focusing on his achievements in mathematics, computer science, and economy. Strangely enough, to date no detailed appraisal of his seminal contributions to the mathematical foundations of quantum physics has appeared. Von Neumann's theory of measurement and his critique of hidden variables became the touchstone of most debates in the foundations of quantum mechanics. Today, his name also figures most prominently in the mathematically rigorous branches of contemporary quantum mechanics of large systems and quantum field theory. And finally - as one of his last lectures, published in this volume for the first time, shows - he considered the relation of quantum logic and quantum mechanical probability as his most important problem for the second half of the twentieth century. The present volume embraces both historical and systematic analyses of his methodology of mathematical physics, and of the various aspects of his work in the foundations of quantum physics, such as theory of measurement, quantum logic, and quantum mechanical entropy. The volume is rounded off by previously unpublished letters and lectures documenting von Neumann's thinking about quantum theory after his 1932 Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. The general part of the Yearbook contains papers emerging from the Institute's annual lecture series and reviews of important publications of philosophy of science and its history.
