Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: A, University of Calabar (Faculty of Arts & Social Science Education), course: The Structure and Organization of Social Studies and New Education Initiatives, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the effectiveness of entrepreneurship in job creation, hence, underlining the importance of the MSMEs sub-sector in the socioeconomic development of the Nigerian economy. Nowadays, the burden of job creation is not solely placed on the shoulders of the government alone but, has become a joint-venture effort between the public and private sectors. On this premise, the paper seeks an enduring answer to this prevalent phenomenon in entrepreneurship development. So, the paper is divided into subheadings, covering the introduction, conceptual explications, theoretical discourse on MSMEs as the driving force of socioeconomic development, and the role of entrepreneurship in the socioeconomic development of Nigeria. The paper concludes by noting that, the transformation of Nigeria's education system into entrepreneurial-based is a way of empowering the young generations with practical skills that could help them become self-reliant (self-employed), thus reducing the increasing social vices and consequences of unemployment. Among others, it was recommended to incorporate entrepreneurship in our school curriculum where vocational subjects would become compulsory right from Upper Basic Education level through tertiary education level to train, prepare, and develop the economic mindset of the younger generations and decrease the high level of unemployment.

Book excerpt: The increasing numbers of college and university graduates from Africa’s tertiary institutions and the declining prospects for jobs in the public and private sector have reinforced the importance of creating avenues for self-employment. But job creation exposes a serious gap in education policies, for basic skills in entrepreneurship are not taught in most tertiary curricula across the continent. This nineteen-chapter volume provides essential course text material for developing the field of entrepreneurship in tertiary institutions, thus addressing the issue of appropriate pedagogy critical for the emerging field of entrepreneurship development in higher education institutions in Africa. Drawing from Nigeria, West Africa and other parts of the developing world, the volume furnishes much needed empirical information to fashion out appropriate policies and projects within macroeconomic framework to nurture small and medium enterprises as a development tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship has been positioned as a panacea to the economic development challenges facing Nigeria. Subsequent Nigerian governments have sought to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial class by investing in entrepreneurship education at the tertiary level. While that investment has yielded increased levels of entrepreneurial participation, it has had limited impact in terms of entrepreneurial business growth. Thus, there emerges a need to understand what factors influence entrepreneurial business growth in Nigeria and how successful Nigerian entrepreneurs learn to grow their businesses to inform future national human resource development (NHRD) policy. Consequently, this study explored how successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria learn to grow a business and identified what knowledge, skills, and abilities they used to facilitate business growth. In addition, the study explored the factors that Nigerian entrepreneurs thought influenced business growth. Using grounded theory as a research methodology, I conducted interviews with twenty successful Nigerian entrepreneurs to obtain data. The data indicated that successful Nigerian entrepreneurs are self-directed learners who engaged in a range of learning activities in which micro-learning processes incidentally occur. Further, participants identified eight task-related knowledge, skills, and abilities they relied on to succeed. They described five factors they believed influenced entrepreneurial business growth and noted that these factors influenced business growth in different ways. The data suggested that the human capital of the entrepreneur mediates the influence of the business environment on enterprise growth. Further, the data strongly indicated that the human capital of the entrepreneur, conceived as discrete task-related knowledge, skills, and abilities developed over time, was the most important factor that determined whether business growth occurred. Overall, the study advances our understanding of the role of learning in entrepreneurial growth in Nigeria and highlights the need to develop holistic NHRD policies that seek to develop the human capital of the entrepreneur, and the institutional environment to increase entrepreneurial success in Nigeria and engender economic development. The study offers recommendations for policy makers, educators in Nigerian Universities, entrepreneurs at large, and suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: In today's economies, global consciousness of entrepreneurial, democracy, is spurring increasing realization that small business entrepreneurship should assume a new dimension in Nigeria, due to its prime contribution to economic development. The study examined the impact of entrepreneurial activities on economic development. The survey research design method was employed. The primary research instrument used was a validated structured questionnaire in which all items were assessed on a 5-point Likert Scale, ranging from 1-5 (strongly disagree to strongly agree). Stratified random sampling technique was employed to select 180 small business entrepreneurs from Ika South Local Government and Ika North East Local Areas in Delta State Nigeria. The analytical tools used were correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis. The study revealed that entrepreneurial activity is a multidimensional construct whose aspects have significant positive relationship with economic development. Specifically, establishment of diverse firms that fosters firms diversity enhances employment generation and economic growth. It is concluded that entrepreneurial activities foster wealth creation which resulted from entrepreneurial innovation, and enhances employment generation and competitive advantage. The study recommended amongst others that government should create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship to thrive and entrepreneurs should venture into diverse and innovative enterprises; because encouraging and releasing people's entrepreneurial energies are significant factors in the process of any counties growth and development.

Book excerpt: Although the absolute number of poor people in the world has declined significantly in recent decades, poverty reduction continues to be a very important issue. There still are very large numbers of poor people, relative poverty is an increasingly concerning problem, and progress on poverty reduction varies enormously from one part of the world to another. Factors contributing to poverty reduction include economic growth, economic integration, and specific poverty-reduction programs, which are often initiated by Western countries. This book considers poverty reduction from a global perspective. Development and Poverty Reduction looks at a wide range of specific subjects, across all continents. It highlights in particular how the issues are perceived from a non-Western perspective and especially how the rise of China is both having a profound impact on poverty reduction globally and also changing the overall way in which development and poverty reduction are approached.
