Book Synopsis Lowering Higher Education by : James Cote
Download or read book Lowering Higher Education written by James Cote and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to the liberal arts and science education when universities attempt to sell it as a form of job training? In Lowering Higher Education, a follow-up to their provocative 2007 book Ivory Tower Blues, James E. Côté and Anton L. Allahar explore the subverted 'idea of the university' and the forces that have set adrift the mission of these institutions. Côté and Allahar connect the corporatization of universities to a range of contentious issues within higher education, from lowered standards and inflated grades to the overall decline of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences instruction. Lowering Higher Education points to a fundamental disconnect between policymakers, who may rarely set foot in contemporary classrooms, and the teachers who must implement their educational policies—which the authors argue are poorly informed—on a daily basis. Côté and Allahar expose stakeholder misconceptions surrounding the current culture of academic disengagement and supposed power of new technologies to motivate students. While outlining what makes the status quo dysfunctional, Lowering Higher Education also offers recommendations that have the potential to reinvigorate liberal education.
Download or read book Complaint! written by Sara Ahmed and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Complaint! Sara Ahmed examines what we can learn about power from those who complain about abuses of power. Drawing on oral and written testimonies from academics and students who have made complaints about harassment, bullying, and unequal working conditions at universities, Ahmed explores the gap between what is supposed to happen when complaints are made and what actually happens. To make complaints within institutions is to learn how they work and for whom they work: complaint as feminist pedagogy. Ahmed explores how complaints are made behind closed doors and how doors are often closed on those who complain. To open these doors---to get complaints through, keep them going, or keep them alive---Ahmed emphasizes, requires forming new kinds of collectives. This book offers a systematic analysis of the methods used to stop complaints and a powerful and poetic meditation on what complaints can be used to do. Following a long lineage of Black feminist and feminist of color critiques of the university, Ahmed delivers a timely consideration of how institutional change becomes possible and why it is necessary.

Book Synopsis The Age of Entitlement by : Christopher Caldwell
Download or read book The Age of Entitlement written by Christopher Caldwell and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major American intellectual and “one of the right’s most gifted and astute journalists” (The New York Times Book Review) makes the historical case that the reforms of the 1960s, reforms intended to make the nation more just and humane, left many Americans feeling alienated, despised, misled—and ready to put an adventurer in the White House. Christopher Caldwell has spent years studying the liberal uprising of the 1960s and its unforeseen consequences and his conclusion is this: even the reforms that Americans love best have come with costs that are staggeringly high—in wealth, freedom, and social stability—and that have been spread unevenly among classes and generations. Caldwell reveals the real political turning points of the past half-century, taking you on a roller-coaster ride through Playboy magazine, affirmative action, CB radio, leveraged buyouts, iPhones, Oxycotin, Black Lives Matter, and internet cookies. In doing so, he shows that attempts to redress the injustices of the past have left Americans living under two different ideas of what it means to play by the rules. Essential, timely, hard to put down, The Age of Entitlement “is an eloquent and bracing book, full of insight” (New York magazine) about how the reforms of the past fifty years gave the country two incompatible political systems—and drove it toward conflict.
Book Synopsis Growing in Gratitude by : Mary Mohler
Download or read book Growing in Gratitude written by Mary Mohler and published by The Good Book Company. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to grow as thankful women of God. As women, we are often encouraged to "count our blessings". But truly biblical gratitude is much more than this. Mary K. Mohler unpacks Scripture to help us grow in gracious gratitude (thanking God for who he is) as well as natural gratitude (thanking him for his blessings) - and to identify and deal with some of the things that hinder us - to help us rediscover the joy of a thankful heart. This thoroughly Bible-centred unpacking of the reasons for gratitude builds on Mary K. Mohler's 25 years experience in mentoring seminary wives at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this book ideal for group use as well as for individuals.

Book excerpt: This casebook covers all topics in the first-year canon of civil procedure, and some topics in advanced litigation classes (e.g., class actions, appeals). It is organized with the reality and complexities of civil litigation in mind, and follows the litigation sequence, from pleading through preclusion. Each chapter takes a practical as well as analytical approach, through (a) a series of Supreme Court and lower court opinions, (b) notes preceding and following those opinions intended to explain the underlying doctrines and principles behind them, and (c) problems intended to assess and refine students’ understanding of doctrines and their rationales. Ultimately, this casebook demands that students read carefully and at a detailed level, analyze critically, and apply the law from the perspective of the theories underlying the various doctrines. Civil Procedure, Second Edition primes students to engage at a high level in the classroom. The authors offer clear explanations and frameworks to help students see what is important about each topic in civil procedure. By the time students arrive in the classroom, they will have a solid understanding not only of basic doctrine and mechanics, but also why each topic matters in the real world of litigation. The case selection reflects this commitment. Rather than rely exclusively on appellate cases exploring legal questions, the authors chose cases that would best help students understand the core functions and challenges of each aspect of civil procedure, including numerous decisions by district and magistrate judges applying the rules. The notes and questions guide students step by step to understand the implications of each case. Throughout, the authors offer insights on the implications of procedural rules as a matter of policy and as a matter of litigation strategy. New to the Second Edition: Revised chapter on personal jurisdiction based on Supreme Court’s decisions in Ford (2021) and Mallory (2023). New cases on issue preclusion, supplemental jurisdiction, personal jurisdiction, service of process, and venue. Updates and refinements throughout the book. Notes and Questions that guide students, step by step, not only to understand case holdings and procedural story lines, but also to appreciate nuances that may otherwise be invisible to first-year students. “Terminology Tips” to help students learn the sometimes-baffling language of civil procedure. “Strategy Sessions” to help students see how procedural rules affect litigation strategy and settlement dynamics. “The Big Picture” boxes to help students step back from each topic to see trends and implications.
