This volume is the first academic work to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to understanding this complex and boundary-crossing phenomenon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Almost invariably, media stories with the word evangelical in their headlines are accompanied by a familiar stock photo: a mass of middle-class worshippers with eyes closed, faces tilted upward, and hands raised to the sky. Yet, despite the fact that worship has become symbolic of evangelicalism's identity in the twenty-first century, it remains an understudied locus of academic inquiry. Historians of American evangelicalism tend to define the movement by its political entanglements (the "rise of the religious Right"), and academic trajectories (the formation of the "evangelical mind"), not its ecclesial practices. Theological scholars frequently dismiss evangelical worship as a reiteration of nineteenth-century revivalism or a derivative imitation of secular entertainment (three Christian rock songs and a spiritual TED talk). But by failing to engage this worship seriously, we miss vital insights into a form of Protestantism that exerts widespread influence in the United States and around the world. Evangelical Worship: An American Mosaic models a new way forward. Drawing together insights from American religious history and liturgical studies, and putting both in conversation with ethnographic fieldwork in seven congregations, this book argues that corporate worship is not a peripheral "extra" tacked on to a fully-formed spiritual/political/cultural movement, but rather the crucible through which congregations forge and negotiate the contours of evangelicalism's contested theological identity"--

Book excerpt: "We live in a world where many live by the “what have you done for me lately?” philosophy. Love, care, and concern is based on what a person has done for them, who that person is, or for what they can get out of a situation. We are self-centered in our love as a society. Against this kind of love comes unconditional love. It is the kind of love that expresses itself to everyone, no matter who they are, no matter what they have done, and expects nothing in return. When Jesus Christ walked the earth as the God/man this was the kind of love he exhibited to others. His death on the cross is God’s ultimate expression of unconditional love. As we live Christian lives, the call is upon us to practice unconditional love just as God does. This generation desperately needs to experience genuine, unselfish, Godly love. In UNCONDITIONAL, the author chronicles his journey seeking to practice unconditional love, sometimes successfully, sometimes struggling. May his journey inspire the reader to be God’s example of His unconditional love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Downs is honest. She’s sincere. And she’s funny. In this two-book ebook bindup of her bestselling titles Perfectly Unique and Speak Love, Annie takes on two topics central to every teen’s life: how we see ourselves when we look in the mirror, and how we use our words in everyday life to either build someone up or take them down. In Perfectly Unique, Annie focuses on the you that everyone sees. Perhaps you are struggling with your body image or are trying to make sense of why God made you as you are. Maybe you are looking for new ways to understand Scripture or to love God more fully. Either way, this book will take you on a thoughtful, funny, and spirit-filled exploration of the way you were designed and will help you better honor the Creator by learning to value his perfectly unique creation (yourself!). In Speak Love, Annie turns the focus to the you that sometimes slips out via your tongue. Because everything you say—from what tell your friends, whisper about your enemies, post online, mutter to yourself, or even say to the celebrity you ran into at the coffee shop—carries a whole lot of power. Through very funny stories, Scripture, and a real understanding of the good, bad, and ugly ways we can use our words, Annie Downs explores the difference you can make when you speak love to others, to God, and even to yourself. Because when you speak love, you speak life. And that's what matters.

She gives you permission to grieve your unmet expectations while opening your heart and life to unforeseen possibilities. Includes a Group Study Guide The author is committed to giving twenty percent of her profits from this book to AIDchild (www.aidchild.org), an orphanage in Uganda for children living with AIDS, and iEmpathize (www.iempathize.org), an organization that fights to eradicate child exploitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight setups. Eight awkward dates. Eight things God tried to teach her along the way. (Some of which she's still trying to figure out.) Stephanie Rische was starting to feel invisible. All around her, her friends were getting married, and she found herself decidedly alone. Stephanie couldn't help but wonder if there was something broken in her--was she not pretty enough? Not fun enough? Not dateable enough (whatever that meant)? So she started praying in earnest for God to bring the right man into her life. And instead, He brought her matchmakers. Eight of them, to be precise. Beloved blogger Stephanie Rische debuts with this charming, vulnerable, and (who are we kidding?) often mortifying true story of a girl who tried really hard to find someone to fall in love with--even when she mostly just ended up falling flat on her face. But amid the most cringeworthy setups and awkward encounters, Stephanie found God's grace and love meeting her there in ways she never could have imagined--once she opened her eyes to see.

Book excerpt: Though the emergent church was once viewed as a fringe movement with little to offer established congregations, it is now seen as one of the central driving forces shaping the future of postmodern Christianity in North America. As an increasing number of mainline communities wonder how the emergent church influences their own structures and practices, this book brings together the perspectives of several of the most prominent "Hyphenated Christians," i.e. those with one foot in the emergent conversation and the other foot in the mainline church - Presbymergents, Anglimergents, Luthermergents, Methomergents, etc. With a passion for both mainline traditions and the emergent conversation, "Hyphenateds" offer a vibrant and contagious vision of the ways in which the church might undergo the transformation necessary to faithfully embody the love of Christ in the midst of an ever-changing postmodern world. The contributors of this book offer wisdom from a variety of contexts and The Hypenateds reflects the changing dynamics currently taking place in the emergent conversation.
