Book Synopsis This Ghostly Poetry by : Daniel Aguirre-Otezia
Download or read book This Ghostly Poetry written by Daniel Aguirre-Otezia and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Civil War was idealized as a poet’s war. The thousands of poems written about the conflict are memorable evidence of poetry’s high cultural and political value in those historical conditions. After Franco’s victory and the repression that followed, numerous Republican exiles relied on the symbolic agency of poetry to uphold a sense of national identity. Exilic poems are often read as claim-making narratives that fit national literary history. This Ghostly Poetry critiques this conventional understanding of literary history by arguing that exilic poems invite readers to seek continuity with a traumatic past just as they prevent their narrative articulation. The book uses the figure of the ghost to address temporal challenges to historical continuity brought about by memory, tracing the discordant, disruptive ways in which memory is interwoven with history in poems written in exile. Taking a novel approach to cultural memory, This Ghostly Poetry engages with literature, history, and politics while exploring issues of voice, time, representation, and disciplinarity.

Download or read book BILLIE HOLIDAY written by Carlos Sampayo and published by Nantier Beall Minoustchine Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Baltimore in 1915, and dead too early in New York in 1959, Billie Holiday became a legendary jazz singer, even mythical. With her voice even now managing to touch so many people, we follow a reporter on the trail of the artist on behalf of a New York daily. Beyond the public scandals that marred the life of the star (alcohol, drugs, violence...), he seeks to restore the truth, revisiting the memory of Billie. Through this investigation, Munoz and Sampayo trace, through the undertones of racism, and in the wake of the blues, the slow drift of a singer who expressed the deepest emotions in jazz. By internationally renowned Argentine artists, featuring Munoz strikingly raw heavy blacks, this is not just a biography but a spell-binding art book tribute."

Download or read book A City on a Lake written by Matthew Vitz and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A City on a Lake Matthew Vitz tracks the environmental and political history of Mexico City and explains its transformation from a forested, water-rich environment into a smog-infested megacity plagued by environmental problems and social inequality. Vitz shows how Mexico City's unequal urbanization and environmental decline stemmed from numerous scientific and social disputes over water policy, housing, forestry, and sanitary engineering. From the prerevolutionary efforts to create a hygienic city supportive of capitalist growth, through revolutionary demands for a more democratic distribution of resources, to the mid-twentieth-century emergence of a technocratic bureaucracy that served the interests of urban elites, Mexico City's environmental history helps us better understand how urban power has been exercised, reproduced, and challenged throughout Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Catholicism and Politics in Argentina, 1810-1960 by : Austen Ivereigh
Download or read book Catholicism and Politics in Argentina, 1810-1960 written by Austen Ivereigh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare study of Catholicism in Latin-American politics prior to Vatican II, this work examines the role of Catholics and Catholic theology in the development of Argentine political history. The author challenges standard interpretations in arguing that Argentine authoritarianism derives principally from the Enlightenment offshoots of liberalism and popular nationalism. The author argues that the tension between these strains, and a broad humanistic cultural framework informed by the Catholic tradition, helps to explain Argentine political instability, while shedding new light on leaders and movements, and especially Peronism.
Book Synopsis Cervantes, the Golden Age, and the Battle for Cultural Identity in 20th-Century Spain by : Ana María G. Laguna
Download or read book Cervantes, the Golden Age, and the Battle for Cultural Identity in 20th-Century Spain written by Ana María G. Laguna and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies that connect the Spanish 17th and 20th centuries usually do so through a conservative lens, assuming that the blunt imperialism of the early modern age, endlessly glorified by Franco's dictatorship, was a constant in the Spanish imaginary. This book, by contrast, recuperates the thriving, humanistic vision of the Golden Age celebrated by Spanish progressive thinkers, writers, and artists in the decades prior to 1939 and the Francoist Regime. The hybrid, modern stance of the country in the 1920s and early 1930s would uniquely incorporate the literary and political legacies of the Spanish Renaissance into the ambitious design of a forward, democratic future. In exploring the complex understanding of the multifaceted event that is modernity, the life story and literary opus of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) acquires a new significance, given the weight of the author in the poetic and political endeavors of those Spanish left-wing reformists who believed they could shape a new Spanish society. By recovering their progressive dream, buried for almost a century, of incipient and full Spanish modernities, Ana María G. Laguna establishes a more balanced understanding of both the modern and early modern periods and casts doubt on the idea of a persistent conservatism in Golden Age literature and studies. This book ultimately serves as a vigorous defense of the canonical as well as the neglected critical traditions that promoted Cervantes's humanism in the 20th century.
