Book excerpt: Seeds for Enlightenment 101 is a compilation of reflective thoughts, aspirations, and hopes that were inspired by life experiences and meditations with the Lord. Gaining inspiration and revelation mostly from the book of Ecclesiastes—a time and season for all things, and nothing new under the sun—this book explores how the author views the world. Take note, as you read, hopefully seeds will be planted in your heart that will take root, thrive, and grow, leading you to find your purpose, and fulfill it with passion. You will gain a new perspective, and strength to be steadfast and unmovable, as you are the light that might lead others to our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. “May these words, and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).

Book excerpt: The Bhagavad Gita (or "Song of God") is one of the richest, most complete, and most important spiritual works ever composed. Its teachings have been a timeless source of inspiration, wisdom, and guidance for over a thousand years. The Gita (as it is affectionately known) is laid out as the story of a regular person, Arjuna, who has become despondent after coming to see life as a meaningless, pointless, and never-ending struggle. Arjuna is ready to quit. Sound familiar? Krishna (a mysterious friend and hero of the story) comes to Arjuna in his time of need and counsels him on the meaning of life as well as the path that leads to purpose and deliverance. What does Arjuna find at the end of his journey? Meaning. Tranquility. Enlightenment. Because the struggles Arjuna faced and suffered from are the same as those we face today, the teachings of the Gita are every bit as pertinent in our era as they were over a thousand years ago when it was first recorded. I designed my version of this enduring classic to be concise, modern, and accessible to all readers, even those with no prior knowledge of Hindu philosophy. Book excerpt: A fresh new look at the Enlightenment intellectual who became the most controversial of America's founding fathers Despite his being a founder of both the United States and the French Republic, the creator of the phrase "United States of America," and the author of Common Sense, Thomas Paine is the least well known of America's founding fathers. This edifying biography by Craig Nelson traces Paine's path from his years as a London mechanic, through his emergence as the voice of revolutionary fervor on two continents, to his final days in the throes of dementia. By acquainting us as never before with this complex and combative genius, Nelson rescues a giant from obscurity-and gives us a fascinating work of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kybalion is probably the most controversial spiritual work of the twentieth century. Its teachings are based on the works of Hermes, an ancient Egyptian philosopher. Like Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Socrates and a few other philosophical and religious founders, Hermes is said to have received his knowledge in a vision during a period of deep concentration. During his "awakening", Hermes claimed to have been exposed to the truth of the world, how it works, and what lies beyond. He believed that he had experienced "the Soul of the Universe". The Kybalion is a categorization and explanation of the seven main laws of life, as expressed to Hermes during his vision. Legend has it that these laws have been passed down in secret for centuries from teacher to students considered ready for the information, much like Jesus's passing on of inner knowledge only to his closest disciples. The initial publishing of The Kybalion by "The Three Initiates" is reported to be the first time the general public has had access to these inner teachings. The seven laws of The Kybalion will sound familiar to many, for they are the underlying themes of this existence. But learning the exact significance and meaning of these laws has been a closely guarded secret for millennia. A secret that, once understood, has the potential to transform your life, and your understanding of life. The immediate effect of the teachings is believed to be an enhanced ability to live a better life, in all areas of concern. The long term effect is an evolution of consciousness and awareness toward higher and higher levels. In the Bible, it is said that Adam fell into a deep sleep. Nowhere does it ever say that he woke up. An "awakening" that carries us beyond our current level of cognition and perception is the ultimate goal of the teachings of The Kybalion."We know what we are, but know not what we may be."-Shakespeare

Book excerpt: This booklet is the Introduction to my forthcoming book Enlightenment 101: A Guide to God-Realization and Higher Human Culture. It begins: Enlightenment. What is it? How do we get it? Why should we try? How do we know when we're enlightened? What do we do when we're enlightened? What would happen to society if a large number of people were enlightened? What if that occurred on a global scale? I'll try to answer these questions clearly and comprehensively, but nontechnically. I'll also try to answer them in a way which connects with your own life and makes enlightenment personally valuable to you. Hopefully speaking, it will become the most valuable thing in life for you-because in the big scheme of things, it truly is just that.

Book excerpt: The Emerald Tablet is purported to be a fourteen step instruction manual for the Alchemical process of turning ordinary metals like lead into something much more valuable, like gold. If you can decipher the meaning, that is. Over the centuries, many have tried.I believe the fourteen statements of the Emerald Tablet to be a symbolic guide to a far greater treasure...Legend has it that this guide was written by Hermes Trismegistus, an ancient Egyptian philosopher whose discoveries were said to have transformed him, through knowledge of this world, into a god among men, so to speak. The Egyptians thought so highly of him that they equated him with their god Thoth (see front cover) and the Greeks, in similar fashion, equated him with ther god Mercury. What is the goal of the Emerald Tablet, as transmitted to us by Hermes through the fourteen cryptic statements? To tranform those of us who can decipher its meaning into a higher level of human consciousness. To transform the reader, through knowledge, into what the Egyptians would have called a god among men."This world is a holographic unity that repeats itself in an endless, infinite continuum in every direction forever."

Book excerpt: The Thirty Years War: A Documentary History fills a gap in recent studies of the great pan-European conflict, providing fresh translations of thirty-eight primary documents for the student and general reader. The selections are drawn from the standard political documents, from the Apology of the Bohemian Estates for the Defenestration of Prague to the text of the Treaty of Westphalia, as well as from imperial edicts, trial records, letters, diary entries, and satirical broadsheets, all directly translated from the Early New High German, French, Swedish, and Latin. The volume contains some ten illustrations and one map . . . and on the whole is well organized and well presented with a judicious amount of footnotes and a slim For Further Reading section. A succinct introduction introduces the four sections, each with its own substantial introduction: (1) Outbreak of the Thirty Years War (1618-1623), (2) The Intervention of Denmark and Sweden (1623-1635), and (3) The Long War (1635-1648). The concluding section (4) Two Wartime Lives (1618-1648), interestingly juxtaposes the journals of a wandering mercenary and a settled townsman. The first is the diary of Peter Hagendorf, kept between the years 1624 and 1649 and only rediscovered in 1993. Hagendorf experienced the war as a common mercenary from the Baltic to Italy, from France to Pomerania. His counterpart is Hans Heberle, a shoemaker from a small town in the territory of the free imperial city of Ulm whose Zeytregister chronicled happenings both in the neighborhood and further afield. The engrossing accounts of their shifting fortunes over the three decades of the war really help to give this collection of texts, and the troublesome period itself, a human face. They are the stuff from which Grimmelshausen would craft his great novel of the war, The Adventuresome Simplicissimus (1668). Tryntje Helfferich is to be applauded for this consistently interesting and eminently useful volume. --Martin W. Walsh, University of Michigan, in Sixteenth Century Journal

Book excerpt: THE ANKH IS THE EGYPTIAN SYMBOL OF ETERNAL LIFE More specifically, the ankh symbol looks like and represents a "key"- a key to unlocking the door to eternal life. How do you get this key? Through knowledge- a very specific knowledge that was a closely and jealously guarded secret. Mirrors were often made in the shape of the ankh key in order to remind the user of the existence of a perception of life that extended into another world, into another reality. The teachings within this book are aimed at expressing, in modern and plain terms, the ancient Egyptian knowledge that was believed to be this key- the key to unlocking the door to eternal life, and for bestowing upon the user the perception of life beyond this World. From the book: "Just as we were developed for this world in the womb, so too are we being developed for the next world within these bodies. "Just as we emerged from the world of our mother's womb into this world, so too will we emerge from the world of these bodies into the next..."

Lam rim chen mo) is one of the brightest jewels in the world’s treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa, completed it in 1402, and it soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Because it condenses all the exoteric sūtra scriptures into a meditation manual that is easy to understand, scholars and practitioners rely on its authoritative presentation as a gateway that leads to a full understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. Tsong-kha-pa took great pains to base his insights on classical Indian Buddhist literature, illustrating his points with classical citations as well as with sayings of the masters of the earlier Kadampa tradition. In this way the text demonstrates clearly how Tibetan Buddhism carefully preserved and developed the Indian Buddhist traditions. This second of three volumes covers the deeds of the bodhisattvas, as well as how to train in the six perfections.

Book excerpt: Finally, here's a book about postmodernism that you don't need a philosophy degree to understand. In Postmodernism 101: A First Course for the Curious Christian, Heath White offers a brief and accessible introduction to the ideas of postmodernism and its relationship to Christianity. White paints the historical and philosophical background underlying postmodernism in understandable, but not oversimplified, language. He then describes what postmodernism means to our view of self, language, thought, the search for knowledge, and culture. White invites Christians who otherwise might have avoided postmodern theorizing into this important dialogue with questions for further thought after each chapter and suggestions for future reading. This book is ideal for students as well as curious pastors and lay readers.
