Book excerpt: Management strategies for fish populations in small impoundments are reviewed with consideration given to intensification techniques applied throughout the United States and Canada. The concept of balance in fish populations is used as a basis for illustrating the importance of maintaining desirable predator/prey relationships through stocking and harvest regulation of keystone predators. Generally, harvest levels for predators are reduced when species diversity and structural complexity of the environment are increased. Intensification is also achieved by enhancing water fertility through liming and fertilization. Case studies are presented representing contrasting climatic regions of North America while demonstrating similarities in management style. Principles and practices presented in this paper should be adaptable to the management of fisheries in small water bodies over a wider geographical range than discussed.

Book excerpt: Small indigenous fish species (SIS) are an important source of essential macro- and micronutrients that can play an important role in the elimination of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the populations of many South and Southeast Asian countries. Of the 260 freshwater fish species in Bangladesh, more than 140 are classified as SIS and are an integral part of the rural Bangladeshi diet. As many SIS are eaten whole, with organs and bones, they contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, and iron and zinc. Some SIS, such as mola, are also rich in vitamin A. SIS are often cooked with vegetables and a little oil, so they contribute to the food diversity of the rural poor.SIS are recognized as a major animal-source food group, contributing to improved food and nutrition security and livelihoods of the people of South and Southeast Asia. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together policy makers, extension agents, researchers, non-governmental and development organizations to share knowledge about small fish, their contribution to better nutrition, production technologies, and strategies for wider dissemination of pond culture and wetland based-production and conservation technologies. The workshop is expected to generate ideas for further research and development of sustainable technologies for production, management and conservation of SIS for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh as well as the South and Southeast Asian region.

In many regions of the world, marine and lacustrine hydrosystems are (or have been) the object of severe or fatal alterations, from changes in regional hydrological regimes and/or modifications of the quantity or the quality of water resources associated with (natural or man-made) land reclamation, deterioration of geochemical balances (increased salinity, oxygen's depletion .. . ), mutations of ecosystems (eutrophication, dramatic decrease in biological diversity ... ) to geological disturbances and to the socio-economic perturbations which have been - or may be in the near future - the consequences of them. Seas and lakes are dying all over the world and some may be regarded as already dead and there is an urgent need to try to understand how this is happening and identify the causes of the observed mutations, weighing the relative effects of climatic evolution and anthropic interferences. This book is the outcome of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, held in Liege in May 2003. The Workshop was organized at th the University of Liege as a follow on meeting to the 35 International Liege Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics, dedicated in 2003 to Dying and Dead Seas. This book is comprised of 26 chapters and begins with a discussion on natural phosphate sources in relation to phosphate budgets, paying particular attention to eutrophication and soil erosion. The significance of man-made sources of phosphorus, such as fertilizers and farming, detergents and sewage, is then examined. Subsequent chapters focus on the role of phosphorus in the growth of plants and animals in rivers, lakes, and the sea; the hydrogeochemical cycling of phosphorus; phosphorus analysis in sea water; and safety evaluation of substitutes for phosphates in detergents. The microbiology of an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant chemically treated for phosphorus removal is also explored. This monograph will be of interest to policymakers concerned with water pollution control.
