Book Synopsis Land Use Law for Sustainable Development by : Nathalie J. Chalifour
Download or read book Land Use Law for Sustainable Development written by Nathalie J. Chalifour and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-20 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 book surveys the global experience to date in implementing land-use policies that move us further along the sustainable development continuum. The international community has long recognized the need to ensure ongoing and future development is conducted sustainably. While high-level commitments towards sustainable development such as those included in the Rio and Johannesburg Declarations are politically important, they are irrelevant if they are not translated into reality on the ground. This book includes chapters that discuss the challenges of implementing sustainable land-use policies in different regions of the world, revealing problems that are common to all jurisdictions and highlighting others that are unique to particular regions. It also includes chapters documenting new approaches to sustainable land use, such as reforms to property rights regimes and environmental laws. Other chapters offer comparisons of approaches in different jurisdictions that can present insights which might not be apparent from a single-jurisdiction analysis.

Book Synopsis Towards a "second Generation" in Environmental Laws in the Asian and Pacific Region by : Lin Heng Lye
Download or read book Towards a "second Generation" in Environmental Laws in the Asian and Pacific Region written by Lin Heng Lye and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2003 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laws in the twentieth century were based on economic growth and development. This new century calls for the reassessment of all laws from an environmental perspective in consideration of such looming environmental concerns as global warming, degradation of biodiversity and pollution. This book captures some provoking thoughts raised during a symposium on second generation environmental laws held in Japan in 2002. The wide range of articles will promote greater understanding of what has been achieved with the first generation of environmental laws, what is needed for the second generation, and how to bridge the two.

Book Synopsis Legal frameworks for sustainable aquaculture by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Legal frameworks for sustainable aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-05-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture, the farming in water of aquatic animals and aquatic plants, has seen extraordinary growth over recent years in terms of production levels and as regards its share of production of aquatic animals and algae. Although the most recent figures show a slight slowdown in the rate of growth of the sector (FAO, 2022), aquaculture is still seen to have tremendous potential. Many developing countries have high aspirations for rapid aquaculture development in order to feed their fast-growing populations and to increase export earnings. The aim of this study is to identify the essential elements of a legal framework for sustainable aquaculture. For the fact is that in many countries the growth of aquaculture appears to have outpaced the development of the legislation and legal frameworks to govern aquaculture. This study is intended both to act as a guide to the complexity of legal frameworks for aquaculture and also to serve as the background or resource document for the Aquaculture Legal Assessment and Revision Tool (ALART).
Book Synopsis A Road Map for Scaling Private Sector Financing for the Blue Economy in Thailand by : Asian Development Bank

This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the importance of Thailand’s blue economy, this report considers ways to mobilize and scale up private sector investment in areas such as aquaculture and marine renewable energy to help bolster sustainable blue development. It explains why factors such as limited awareness of ocean economy opportunities, a lack of investment-ready at-scale projects, and insufficient monitoring are proving a barrier to investors. The report shows how creating an enabling environment and developing products such as sustainability-linked loans and technical assistance grants could help drive investment flows to the sector and safeguard Thailand’s blue economic growth.

Book Synopsis The Law of Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses by : Nahid Islam
Download or read book The Law of Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses written by Nahid Islam and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Présentation de l'éditeur : "Despite Asia's large share of global water resources, and the importance of its water for sustaining one of the largest agrarian populations in the world, Asia's trans boundary water resource management regimes are poorly developed. There are only two working international regimes in South and South-east Asia: the Mekong and the Indus regimes. The remaining international watercourses in Asia are used by riparian countries in a self-interested manner, without much consideration for the interests of other states or for the environment. These national interests do not often represent the interests and needs of the local people. This book is divided into three Parts. Part I discusses the different contexts of law-making in the industrialized west and in agrarian societies in Asia, as well as the changing context of law-making following the emergence of the concept of sustainable development. Part II discusses the regime of international watercourses. Part III of the book presents two case studies in Asia: the Mekong and the Ganges. The main argument is that in the absence of public participation in decision-making and resource management, the basin states revert to using the watercourses according to the principles of the classical regime. The result, so far, has been unsustainable development, environmental degradation and growing poverty of local user communities."
