Book excerpt: Synthetic Vision Systems and Enhanced Flight Vision System (SVS/EFVS) technologies have the potential to provide additional margins of safety for aircrew performance and enable operational improvements for low visibility operations in the terminal area environment with equivalent efficiency as visual operations. To meet this potential, research is needed for effective technology development and implementation of regulatory standards and design guidance to support introduction and use of SVS/EFVS advanced cockpit vision technologies in Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) operations. A fixed-base pilot-in-the-loop simulation test was conducted at NASA Langley Research Center that evaluated the use of SVS/EFVS in NextGen low visibility approach and landing operations. Twelve crews flew approach and landing operations in a simulated NextGen Chicago O'Hare environment. Various scenarios tested the potential for using EFVS to conduct approach, landing, and roll-out operations in visibility as low as 1000 feet runway visual range (RVR). Also, SVS was tested to evaluate the potential for lowering decision heights (DH) on certain instrument approach procedures below what can be flown today. Expanding the portion of the visual segment in which EFVS can be used in lieu of natural vision from 100 feet above the touchdown zone elevation to touchdown and rollout in visibilities as low as 1000 feet RVR appears to be viable as touchdown performance was acceptable without any apparent workload penalties. A lower DH of 150 feet and/or possibly reduced visibility minima using SVS appears to be viable when implemented on a Head-Up Display, but the landing data suggests further study for head-down implementations. This final rule permits operators to use an EFVS in lieu of natural vision to continue descending from 100 feet above the TDZE to the runway and to land on certain straight-in IAPs under instrument flight rules (IFR). This final rule also revises and relocates the regulations that permit operators to use an EFVS in lieu of natural vision to descend to 100 feet above the TDZE using certain straight-in IAPs. Additionally, this final rule addresses provisions that permit operators who conduct EFVS operations under parts 121, 125, or 135 to use EFVS-equipped aircraft to dispatch, release, or takeoff under IFR, and revises the regulations for those operators to initiate and continue an approach, when the destination airport weather is below authorized visibility minimums for the runway of intended landing. This final rule establishes pilot training and recent flight experience requirements for operators who use EFVS in lieu of natural vision to descend below the DA/DH or MDA. EFVS-equipped aircraft conducting operations to touchdown and rollout are required to meet additional airworthiness requirements. This final rule also revises pilot compartment view certification requirements for vision systems using a transparent display surface located in the pilot's outside field of view. The final rule takes advantage of advanced vision capabilities, thereby achieving the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) goals of increasing access, efficiency, and throughput at many airports when low visibility is the limiting factor. Additionally, it enables EFVS operations in reduced visibilities on a greater number of approach procedure types while maintaining an equivalent level of safety. This document does not include consideration of detection and/or display of air targets or integration of systems such as TCAS. The use of enhanced visual scene content as both a tool to increase situation awareness and as a sole flight guidance display has increased and will continue to increase. Correct implementation of these types of displays is essential and critical to safe operation.SAE G-10 Aerospace Behavior Engineering Technology (ABET) Committee, specifically the Enhanced Vision/Synthetic Vision (EV/SV) Subcommittee, has been tasked to provide implementation document guidance associated with the human interface considerations in the design, development and implementation of enhanced synthetic vision systems.

Book excerpt: Research literature are reviewed and summarized to evaluate the awareness and detection of traffic and obstacles when using Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS) and Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS). The study identifies the critical issues influencing the time required, accuracy, and pilot workload associated with recognizing and reacting to potential collisions or conflicts with other aircraft, vehicles and obstructions during approach, landing, and surface operations. This work considers the effect of head-down display and head-up display implementations of SVS and EVS as well as the influence of single and dual pilot operations. The influences and strategies of adding traffic information and cockpit alerting with SVS and EVS were also included. Based on this review, a knowledge gap assessment was made with recommendations for ground and flight testing to fill these gaps and hence, promote the safe and effective implementation of SVS/EVS technologies for the Next Generation Air Transportation System.

The model particularly examines a pilot's visual scan during an instrument approach in conditions where the pilot may be looking 'down' at the instrument panel or may be looking 'up', through a Heads-Up Display (HUD) overlaid with the sensor returns of Enhanced Flight Vision Systems (EFVS). With this, it can capture where pilots direct their visual scan during a precision approach in conditions that require them to shift their visual attention and relate these shifts in visual attention to their likely cause (e.g., expecting that the EFVS sensor is coming in range) and to their impact on how pilots control the aircraft. A fixed-based flight simulator of a general aviation aircraft with an EFVS system and eye-tracking glasses were used to measure a pilot's control activity and visual attention. During the data collection, the EFVS sensor range was varied. Three sets of data were collected: Aircraft Dynamic State, Pilot Control Inputs (elevator, aileron and rudder deflection, and throttle and flap settings); and Pilot's Visual Attention Allocation (time history of which instrument or flight information the pilot scanned). The sets of data were combined to create the final dataset comprising multivariate time series data. The dataset was divided into 3 phases (Before the EFVS is in range, After the EFVS is visually acquired, and Expectation of the EFVS coming into range). A machine learning algorithm known as Vector Auto Regression (VAR) was utilized to model this behavior. VAR is a common method used for multivariate time series analysis. It is important to this thesis because it can explain past and casual relationships among multiple variables over time. The model was of two parts: a visual attention model and a control input model. Results showed that, overall, the pilot showed a consistent pattern of attention: Before the EFVS was in range, the majority of his visual attention was directed towards the instrument panel. When the EFVS was expected to come into range, his attention was divided between the instrument panel and the HUD, and finally once the EFVS was acquired, his attention was directed mostly towards the HUD. When the pilot could transition from one pattern of attention to another thus depends on the range of the EFVS. In addition, this thesis demonstrated 1) No two flights are the same, and a different model can be made for every single flight; 2) It is possible to build one sufficient model for all flights by a pilot that is capable of describing that pilot and seeing how the EFVS changes the pilots behavior within the different phases. Future work could examine making a model that describes the flights of a wide range of pilots, for the broadest utility of the modeling to support engineering design and certification.
