Book Synopsis English Prepositions Explained by : Seth Lindstromberg
Download or read book English Prepositions Explained written by Seth Lindstromberg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and expanded edition of English Prepositions Explained (EPE), originally published in 1998, covers approximately 100 simple, compound, and phrasal English prepositions of space and time – with the focus being on short prepositions such as at, by, in, and on. Its target readership includes teachers of ESOL, pre-service translators and interpreters, undergraduates in English linguistics programs, studious advanced learners and users of English, and anyone who is inquisitive about the English language. The overall aim is to explain how and why meaning changes when one preposition is swapped for another in the same context. While retaining most of the structure of the original, this edition says more about more prepositions. It includes many more figures – virtually all new. The exposition draws on recent research, and is substantially founded on evidence from digitalized corpora, including frequency data. EPE gives information and insights that will not be found in dictionaries and grammar handbooks.

That's just how we speak.""There's no logic to prepositions. You just have to memorize them."Here's a secret for you: English prepositions are logical. Why your English Teacher was WrongImagine a farm that grows a lot of different plants. On the surface, you see all the leaves and branches. These leaves and branches are the different dictionary definitions that seem to be disconnected and random. These "surface meanings" are what native speakers are aware of. However, underground we find the root of each plant. The root is the logic that all the dictionary definitions are based on. This underground level is part of the subconscious mind, so native speakers aren't consciously aware of it. This book teaches you the hidden, logical relationships that give prepositions their meaning. What's in this Book? This book contains seventeen of the most common and confusing prepositions in the English language. Each preposition has its own chapter that's divided into sections that guide you through the process and help you learn more easily and more effectively. The sections are: A) Example Sentences (there are over 450 examples); B) The Logic, which includes the key idea(s), an explanation, and etymology notes; C) Detailed explanations of how the logic works in the example sentences from section A; D) Verbs that often use each preposition; E) Phrasal verbs; and F) Idioms. At the end of the book are a few maps of the logical relationships.
Book Synopsis Understanding the Concepts of English Prepositions by : Andrew Bruckfield
Download or read book Understanding the Concepts of English Prepositions written by Andrew Bruckfield and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENGLISH PREPOSITIONS are the most frequently occurring type of essential words in the English language and should be learned by everyone who wants to speak English fluently-whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner. Prepositions have a strategic function in the English discourse-especially for nonnative speakers. These (often logical) connectors have tremendous power and are of critical importance in the English language learning processes, as well as in grammar studies. Prepositions are an indispensable part of the English sentence structure and perhaps the most efficient tool for international students in the environment of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), for teachers and students of English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Spatial and nonspatial relations are conceptual in nature. We use prepositions to describe these relations and the interaction between words and meanings in a sentence, clause, or phrase. But context makes it almost impossible for us to grasp the meanings of these words without understanding the concepts behind these logical or contextual connectors. Understanding the Concepts of English Prepositions explores the seven key concepts and their contextual implications encompassing the spatial and nonspatial senses of English prepositions. __________ Andrew Bruckfield's English Language Reference Library: - Prepositions: The Ultimate Book - Mastering English Prepositions, The Key to Fluency in English Conversation - Prepositions by Example - The Quickest Way to Learn and Practice English Prepositions - Understanding the Concepts of English Prepositions - The Container Effect, Dimensional Prepositions, The Proximity Effect, The Concept of Magnitude, The Sound-Wave Effect, The Platform Effect, Complex Prepositions: including Spatial, Nonspatial & Temporal Uses - Essential & Practical English Grammar - A Compendium of Verbs, Phrasal Verbs, Idioms, Prepositions, Vocabulary, Punctuation & more.

Download or read book Pattern Grammar written by Susan Hunston and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an approach to lexis and grammar based on the concept of phraseology and of language patterning arising from work on large corpora. The notion of 'pattern' as a systematic way of dealing with the interface between lexis and grammar was used in Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1995) and in the two books in the Collins Cobuild Grammar Patterns series (1996; 1998). This volume describes the research that led to these publications, and explores the theoretical and practical implications of the research. The first chapter sets the work in the context of work on phraseology. The next two chapters give several examples of patterns and how they are identified. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss and exemplify the association of pattern and meaning. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 relate the concept of pattern to traditional approaches to grammar and to discourse. Chapter 9 summarizes the book and adds to the theoretical discussion, as well as indicating the applications of this approach to language teaching. The volume is intended to contribute to the current debate concerning how corpora challenge existing linguistic theories, and as such will be of interest to researchers in the fields of grammar, lexis, discourse and corpus linguistics. It is written in an accessible style, however, and will be equally suitable for students taking courses in those areas.
Book Synopsis Prepositions and Particles in English by : Elizabeth M. O'Dowd
Download or read book Prepositions and Particles in English written by Elizabeth M. O'Dowd and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth M. O'Dowd offers a new, discourse-functional account of the categories "preposition" and "particle" in English. She explains why certain words have membership in both categories, and solves many intriguing puzzles long associated with the syntax and semantics of these words. Based on linguistic data extracted from a series of actual conversations, O'Dowd provides new insights into how prepositions and particles are used, and how their meanings can change across different discourse contexts over time.
Book Synopsis Getting at GET in World Englishes by : Elisabeth Bruckmaier
Download or read book Getting at GET in World Englishes written by Elisabeth Bruckmaier and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its exceptional frequency and versatility, GET has never been a focus of research in its entire variability, which goes from lexical to grammatical uses, nor in large amounts of data from different varieties of English. The present corpus-based study deals with over 11,600 tokens of GET in written and spoken language from three varieties of English and thus provides new insights for variationist linguistics. Firstly, it offers a comprehensive semasiological-syntactic analysis of GET, i.e. an analysis of all its meanings and all the constructions into which it enters, suggesting ten categories as being necessary for its complete description. Secondly, it contributes to the understanding of factors that are at work in variation in World Englishes and lead to quantitative differences between regional standard varieties. Thus, the present study demonstrates that the use of GET in the New Englishes analysed is less affected by substrate effects than by the effects of Second Language Acquisition and the varying influence of British and American English norms. Moreover, it can be shown that the New Englishes display more grammatical uses of GET than does British English.
