Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 6: Scott, Burns, Coleridge Ir will be observed that the greater part of this little book has been taken in one form or other from Lockhart's Life of Sir Walter Scott, in ten volumes. N o introduction to Scott would be worth much in which that course was not followed. Indeed, excepting Sir Walter's own writ ings, there is hardly any other great source of information about him; and that is so full, that hardly anything need ful to illustrate the subject of Scott's life remains nu touched. As regards the only matters of controversy, Scott's relations to the Ballantynes, I have taken care to check Mr. Lockhart's statements by reading those of the representatives of the Ballantyne brothers; but with this exception, Sir walter's own works and Lockhart's life of him are the great authorities concerning his character and his story. Download or read book English Men of Letters, Vol. 6 written by John Morley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 6: Bunyan; Johnson; Bacon From the time when the Reformation brought them a translation of it, the Bible was the book most read - it was Often the only book which was read - in humble English homes. Familiarity with the words had not yet trampled the sacred writings into practical barrenness. NO doubts or questions had yet risen about the Bible's nature or origin. It was received as the authentic word of God Himself. The Old and New Testament alike rep resented the world as the scene of a struggle between good and evil spirits; and thus every ordinary incident of daily life was an instance or illustration of God's provi dence. This was the universal popular belief, not admit ted only by the intellect, but accepted and realised by the imagination. N 0 one questioned it, save a few speculative philosophers in their closets. The statesman in the House of Commons, the judge on the Bench, the peasant in a midland village, interpreted literally by this rule the phe nomena which they experienced or saw. They not only believed that God had miraculously governed the Israelites, but they believed that as directly and immediately He governed England in the seventeenth century. They not only believed that there had been a witch at Endor, but they believed that there were witches in their own villages, who had made compacts with the devil himself. They believed that the devil still literally walked the earth like a roaring lion that he and the evil angels were perpetually labouring to destroy the souls of men; and that God was equally busy overthrowing the devil's work, and bringing sin and crimes to eventual punishment. Book Synopsis Mark Twain's Letters, Volume 6 by : Mark Twain
Download or read book Mark Twain's Letters, Volume 6 written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain's letters for 1874 and 1875 encompass one of his most productive and rewarding periods as author, husband and father, and man of property. He completed the writing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, published the major collection Sketches, New and Old, became a leading contributor to the Atlantic Monthly, and turned The Gilded Age, the novel he had previously coauthored with Charles Dudley Warner, into one of the most popular comedies of the nineteenth-century American stage. His personal life also was gratifying, unmarred by the family tragedies that had darkened the earlier years of the decade. He and his wife welcomed a second healthy daughter and moved into the showplace home in Hartford, Connecticut, that they occupied happily for the next sixteen years. All of these accomplishments and events are vividly captured, in Mark Twain's inimitable language and with his unmatched humor, in letters to family and friends, among them some of the leading writers of the day. The comprehensive editorial annotation supplies the historical and social context that helps make these letters as fresh and immediate to a modern audience as they were to their original readers. This volume is the sixth in the only complete edition of Mark Twain's letters ever attempted. The 348 letters it contains, many of them never before published, have been meticulously transcribed, either from the original manuscripts (when extant) or from the most reliable sources now available. They have been thoroughly annotated and indexed and are supplemented by genealogical charts, contemporary notices of Mark Twain and his works, and photographs of him, his family, and his friends.

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism: Volume 6, The Nineteenth Century, c.1830–1914 written by M. A. R. Habib and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, literary criticism first developed into an autonomous, professional discipline in the universities. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative study of the vast field of literary criticism between 1830 and 1914. In over thirty essays written from a broad range of perspectives, international scholars examine the growth of literary criticism as an institution, and the major critical developments in diverse national traditions and in different genres, as well as the major movements of Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism and Decadence. The History offers a detailed focus on some of the era's great critical figures, such as Sainte-Beuve, Hippolyte Taine and Matthew Arnold, and includes essays devoted to the connections of literary criticism with other disciplines in science, the arts and Biblical studies. The publication of this volume marks the completion of the monumental Cambridge History of Literary Criticism from antiquity to the present day.
