Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Home So many things go to the making of an ideal house, and yet how little do many of us concern our selves with its construction or with the reasons for the particular design of each separate part, the nature of the floors we walk over, the walls which protect us from the cold and heat, and the roofs that afford us shelter from the weather! It is but too true that the education of most of us includes but little study of architecture - the oldest of all the arts - Which throughout successive ages has been the outcome of progressive civilization. It is the one art upon which we are always depen dent, Whether in the secluded village or the crowded town. The lowly country cottage, the stately town house or castle, all in their place must have their suit able architectural form. In our public schools we are taught something of the dwellers in many lands With various climates, and but little of their dwellings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Renaissance Architecture in England The church series are intended to provide information in an interesting as well as an accurate form about the various arts which have clustered round the public worship of god in the Church of christ. Though few have the oppor tunity of knowing much about them, there are many who would like to possess the main outlines about those arts whose productions are so familiar to the Chris tian, and so dear. The authors will write for the average intelligent man who has not had the time to study all these matters for himself; and they will therefore avoid technicalities, while endeavouring at the same time to present the facts with a fidelity which will not, it is hoped, be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consortium of British architects and their patrons rebelled against the early eighteenth century's Baroque excesses and turned instead toward the Renaissance works of Andrea Palladio for inspiration. These Neo-Palladians guided the course of British architecture toward classical principles, and the Vitruvius Britannicus (British Vitruvius) reflects their vision. A sumptuous collection of magnificent copperplate engravings, it depicts great English country houses and public buildings. Published between 1715 and 1725 in a three-folio set, the Vitruvius Britannicus documents in meticulous detail many of the buildings from the previous two centuries. Its 300 illustrations include facades, ground plans, exterior elevations, and perspective views. Featured buildings include those designed by Inigo Jones, the seventeenth-century architect who introduced Palladianism to England; the work of Sir John Vanbrugh, whose innovative Classical-Revival architecture retained a Baroque flair; and contemporary designs, including those of the author, Scottish architect Colen Campbell. The popularity of this volume fostered the development of the Neo-Palladian movement, and Vitruvius Britannicus continues to influence architects and designers. Handsome and modestly priced, this new edition is an essential complement to any design library.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of Architecture in England, From the Conquest to the Reformation The practical value of this work has now been so long established, and is so well known, that it is only necessary to mention the alterations which have been made in the present edition. The text of Mr. Rickman's last edition has been scrupulously preserved, the additional matter being inserted between brackets, or as foot notes. Several years having elapsed since the last edition was published, and those years having been remarkable for a very great and rapid extension of the study of Gothic Architecture, it might be expected that great changes would have been required in this work, which was the first systematic treatise on the subject in any language, and formed the original basis and ground of the study. But notwithstanding the numerous works which have appeared within the last five or six years, it is surprising to observe how very little real information has been added to that which Mr. Rickman collected and digested. The general accuracy of his observations, and the acuteness with which he made use of the facts he had collected, are really quite wonderful, considering that he was the first to examine the ground, and may be said to have invented a new science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the English House It would be useless for any one writer to pretend to accomplish this task, though when the way is cleared a social history connecting more closely and summarizing the work of all the contributors will be possible; but at present it is intended to ask each of them to bring his special knowledge to bear upon the explanation of social life, and, in treating his portion of the work, to look at original authorities to see not merely what light they throw on his own branch separately, but how they affect its conception considered in relation to the whole, that is, to the development of the life of the English people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Examples of the Modern School of English Architecture: The Travellers' Club House Very little is required in the way of Preface, as the Essay which accompanies the Plates consists, for the most part, of general prefatory matter, sewing to explain the views with which the work has been undertaken; nor is it at all necessary to state any thing here with regard to certain of the opinions there brought forward, for hardly can the purport of them be misunderstood; and should they be deemed censurable, hardly would any kind of apology procure for them approbation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of English Architecture, From the Conquest to the Reformation: Preceded by a Sketch of the Grecian and Roman Orders, With Notices of Nearly Five Hundred English Buildings As a text-book for the architectural student, little need be said of this publication. The want of such a work, particularly as it respects the English styles, is generally acknowledged; and it has been the aim of the Author, by a constant reference to buildings, to instil the principles of practice rather than mere theoretical knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Renaissance Architecture in England, 1500-1800 IN preparing this abridgment of my larger history I have endeavoured to supply the architectural student with a concise account of Renaissance architecture in England from 1500 to 1800. Extensive knowledge of detail is, in my opinion, of less importance to the student than a Clear grasp of the historical development of this movement. When he has mastered its general drift and the actual causes which determined its modi fications, his own observation will supply examples, which will fall naturally into their historical place. I have accordingly retained only such'instances as appear to me to have an im mediate bearing on the subject; and for fuller information as to facts and authorities and for some account of the architectural literature of the period, I must refer the student to my larger history. I have added plates of Palladio's orders, taken from Freart's Parallel, on account of their great technical import ance in the architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Hand-book of Architectural Styles, well known and appreciated in Germany, deserves the attention of those many English readers for whom the study of architecture possesses attractions. Its claims rest partly on the comprehensive range which the Author has taken, and the large amount of information which he has been able to condense into small compass; but chiefly in the fact that a familiar subject is here looked at from what, at least to the English readers, may now be called an almost new point of View.
