Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the broad context of Christianity as it developed over two millennia, and with special reference to the last three centuries, this discussion finds that Evangelicalism has repeatedly offered a reduced and distorted understanding of the faith. The evangelical outlook is much less scriptural than evangelicals generally assume. When it comes to appreciating the order of creation, our calling to develop integral Christian thinking and living, the religious significance of culture, and the coming of the kingdom, reductionist Evangelicalism struggles with its only rarely acknowledged deficiencies. As a result, we have all too often ended up with a Christianity shorn of its cosmic scope and wide cultural implications, and restricted to institutional church life and the cultivation of private spiritual experience. The consequences are frequently enervating and corrosive. Without disregarding what is important in the past, evangelicals are here challenged to take the Bible much more seriously, and thereby transcend the limitations of their habitual reductionism. Evangelicals are encouraged to embrace an integral and full-orbed understanding of Christian discipleship that will equip the faithful to address the deep and complex challenges of the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Heaven on Earth written by Martin Spence and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In nineteenth-century Britain, a large number of prominent Anglican and Presbyterian Evangelicals rejected the idea that salvation meant 'going to heaven when you die'. Instead, they proposed that God would establish his kingdom on earth, renewing the creation and reanimating embodied humans to live in a world of science and progress. This book introduces the writings and activities of these women and men, among whom were counted the ardent social reformer Lord Shaftesbury, the highly respectedclergyman Edward Bickersteth, the popular author Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, and the General Secretary of the Evangelical Alliance, Thomas Rawson Birks. The book shows that the catalyst for such theological revisionism was the end-times doctrine known as 'premillennialism'. While commonly characterised as a gloomy and sectarian belief, the book argues that remillennialism in Victorian Britain was actually an optimistic and often liberalising creed. It dissolved older Evangelical assumptions about the dissimilarities between time and eternity, body and soul, heaven and earth. The book demonstrates that, far from being eccentric pessimists, premillennialists were actually pioneers of trends in nineteenth-century Christian theology that stressed the importance of the incarnation, prioritized social justice, and even entertained the idea of universal salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text constitutes a thoroughly revised and re-written attempt at a historical romance which has at its core the ambition of painting an accurate picture of England's Great Protector: Oliver Cromwell. In this wonderfully insightful biography, Herbert illustrates that Cromwell was "a man misguided by his own over-boiling zeal, rather than a misleader of men; a chief, driven onward as he instrument of a paramount necessity forcing him to climb the bloody ladder of ambition, rather than a demagogue, a hypocrite and an usurper." A fascinating account sure to appeal to discerning historians, this scarce text concerning one of England most important historical figures will appeal to a range of readers and deserves a place on any bookshelf. Originally published in 1856, we are proud to republish this book with a new introductory biography of the author.
