Download or read book The Bedsers written by Alan Hill and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sporting twins Alec and Eric Bedser are a remarkable duo. From humble origins at Woking to their reign as key members of the Surrey team during the magnificent succession of seven championships in the 1950s, they share a rare and precious relationship. The Bedsers is Alan Hill's engrossing study which explores the puzzles of their identical twinship. Alec Bedser was England's bowling standard bearer in the years following the Second World War. His exceptional strength and prowess yielding almost 1,924 wickets, including 236 in 51 Tests. He was at the peak of his powers in the 1953 series against Australia, when his aggregate of 39 wickets beat the previous record held by Maurice Tate. It included match figures of 14 wickets for 99 runs at Nottingham - a feat only surpassed against Australia by Wilfred Rhodes, Hedley Verity and Jim Laker. High among his other distinctions was his record against Don Bradman whom he dismissed on eight occasions. After retirement, Alex maintained his connection with cricket in fulfilling administrative duties, which included a record term as Chairman of the Test selectors. Knighted in 1997 for his services to cricket, he is the only English bowler to receive the honour.

Book Synopsis Silence Of The Heart by : David Frith
Download or read book Silence Of The Heart written by David Frith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cricket has an alarming suicide rate. Among international players for England and several other countries it is far above the national average for all sports: and there have been numerous instances at other levels of the game. For thirty years, celebrated cricket author David Frith has collected data on this sad subject. Silence of the Heart is his compelling account of over a hundred cricketers - involving top names from the past hundred years - who have taken their own lives, with an explanation of factors that led to their premature deaths. Can the shocking rate of self-destruction among cricketers be reduced? Can those who run the game do something to save its participants from this dreadful fate? These are among the questions addressed within this catalogue of biographies. But the key question is whether cricket itself is to blame for its losses - or is that this summer game attracts people of a melancholic and over-sensitive nature? Stoddart, Shrewsbury, Gimblett, Bairstow, Trott, Iverson, Robertson-Glasgow, Barnes . . . There remains a sense of disbelief that these high-profile cricketers killed themselves. And many more cases are examined in this extraordinary book, which comes crammed with detail, is not devoid of humour, and must rank among the most intricately researched volumes in cricket's extensive library. With a foreword by former England captain Mike Brearley, now a psychotherapist, Silence of the Heart is a startling investigative narrative covering the phenomenon of cricket's unduly high level of suicide.

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Australian Sport written by Wray Vamplew and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is a nation of sporting enthusiasts, as famous throughout the world for its athletes as for its sporting obsessions. The Oxford Companion to Australian Sport is the first authoritative and encyclopaedic reference on sport in Australia. Produced by the Australian Society for Sports History, in association with the Australian Sports Commission, The Oxford Companion to Australian Sport provides the first cohesive overview of the temper and development of the innumerable codes that constitute the Australian sporting character. Associate Professor Wray Bamplew and his four co-editors - all noted sports historians and authors - provide readers with almost 1000 entries on everything from 'Bodyline' to pigeon-racing. All sports are covered, not just the major ones like cricket, Australian Rules, rugby, lawn tennis and horse-racing. The Companion offers succinct and informative entries on orienteering, parachuting, hang-gliding and korfball, as well as countless short entries on famous and influential sportsmen and women, and on significant institutions, competitions and venues. The Companion also offers major thematic essays on crucial aspects of the history, proliferation and increasing professionalisation of sport in Australia. There are entries on sports medicine and sports management, which are major growth areas. The cultural influence of sport, as represented in art and literature, is discussed in separate entries, as are more contentious subjects such as violence in sport, crowd disorder, and obsessiveness about sport. For the first time, readers have access to biographies of sporting champions from countless sporting codes. Philip Anderson, Raelene Boyle, Ron Barassi, theChappell brothers, Dawn Fraser, Joan Hammond, Keith Miller and John Newcombe all rub shoulders in this literary pantheon. Unrivalled in scope and scholarship, The Oxford Companion to Australian Sport presents a readable cultural history of Australian sport which captures its diversity, its scandals and legends, and its formidable hold on the Australian imagination. It is essential reading for sportsmen and women, sporting administrators, scholars, journalists, and the great mass of sports followers.
