Book excerpt: The Engineering Test of the Overhead Attachment System for Rappelling from UH-1B and UH-1D helicopters was conducted by Yuma Proving Ground, Yuma, Arizona, 5 October 1966 to 11 April 1967. The purpose of the test was to determine the structural adequacy of the overhead attachment beam in its in-use configuration, to determine the safe maximum simultaneous troop and cargo lowerings for the device and to establish criteria for a safety release. The test item was attached to a static ground-based mock-up simulating the helicopter. Shock loads of magnitudes and characteristics exceeding those expected in normal use were applied to the attachment rings of the extended arms. Deflections and stresses were measured. Dummies were lowered from the test item installed in a hovering UH-1D helicopter to gain in-use safety release criteria. The test item will safely support a maximum of two soldiers and equipment rappelling simultaneously from each end of the beam, or a maximum of one 500-pound external cargo package from each end simultaneously. Meticulous care is necessary in laying out and drilling the mounting holes in the beam. Criteria for a safety release were obtained during the hovering tests. No deficiencies or shortcomings were encountered in the installation or use of the test item. Internal cargo package size and weight will be limited to 14 inches in height and 300 pounds in weight.

Book excerpt: This publication represents the eighth volume in an operational and chronological series covering the Marine Corps’ participation in the Vietnam War. This particular volume details the gradual withdrawal in 1970-1971 of Marine combat forces from South Vietnam’s northernmost corps area, I Corps, as part of an overall American strategy of turning the ground war against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong over to the Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam. Although written from the perspective of III MAF and the ground war in I Corps, the volume treats the activities of Marine advisors to the South Vietnamese Armed Forces, the Seventh Fleet Special Landing Force, and Marines on the staff of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, in Saigon. There are separate chapters on Marine air, artillery, and logistics. An attempt has been made to place the Marine role in relation to the overall effort.

Book excerpt: July 2019 Printed in BLACK AND WHITE The Army's Weapon Systems Handbook was updated in July 2019, but is still titled "Weapon Systems Handbook 2018." We are printing this in black and white to keep the price low. It presents many of the acquisition programs currently fielded or in development. The U.S. Army Acquisition Corps, with its 36,000 professionals, bears a unique responsibility for the oversight and systems management of the Army's acquisition lifecycle. With responsibility for hundreds of acquisition programs, civilian and military professionals collectively oversee research, development and acquisition activities totaling more than $20 billion in Fiscal Year 2016 alone. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this so you don't have to. We at 4th Watch Publishing are former government employees, so we know how government employees actually use the standards. When a new standard is released, somebody has to print it, punch holes and put it in a 3-ring binder. While this is not a big deal for a 5 or 10-page document, many DoD documents are over 400 pages and printing a large document is a time- consuming effort. So, a person that's paid $25 an hour is spending hours simply printing out the tools needed to do the job. That's time that could be better spent doing mission. We publish these documents so you can focus on what you are there for. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of the Cold War, a popular parlor game in foreign ministries, think tanks, and academia has been to develop a theory of international relations that best explains the new international order. Although there is widespread agreement that the United States is the world's most powerful country in military, economic, and diplomatic terms, and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future, there is little agreement as to how the rest of the world will react to America's lead. Concepts such as "balancing," "bandwagoning," "buck-passing," and "free riding," to name just a few, have been advanced and debated. And although none presents a unified field theory, each explains some aspect of international relations. Theory has an even more difficult time explaining the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom (UK), especially its remarkable endurance over the past 6 decades. The U.S.-UK partnership flourished during World War II, deepened during the long twilight struggle...

Book excerpt: The National Wildfire Coordinating Group provides national leadership to enable interoperable wildland fire operations among federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners. Primary objectives include: Establish national interagency wildland fire operations standards. Recognize that the decision to adopt standards is made independently by the NWCG members and communicated through their respective directives systems; Establish wildland fire position standards, qualifications requirements, and performance support capabilities (e.g. training courses, job aids) that enable implementation of NWCG standards; Support the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy goals: to restore and maintain resilient landscapes; create fire adapted communities; and respond to wildfires safely and effectively; Establish information technology (IT) capability requirements for wildland fire; and Ensure that all NWCG activities contribute to safe, effective, and coordinated national interagency wildland fire operations. The objectives of the "Interagency Helicopter Operations Guide" (IHOG) are to: Promote safe, cost-efficient and effective aviation services in support of agency and interagency goals and objectives; Define and standardize national, interagency helicopter management and operational procedures for helicopter users from participating agencies; Through standardization, facilitate the ability of personnel from different agencies to work cooperatively on incidents or projects; and Provide a framework within which areas, regions, states, and local units can provide supplemental, site-specific guidance. The procedures contained in this guide apply to helicopter operations conducted by providers and users of helicopters from participating agencies. This guide addresses both incident and resource helicopter operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This aircrew training manual (ATM) standardizes aircrew training programs and flight evaluation procedures. This manual provides specific guidelines for executing CH-47D/F aircrew training based on Field Manual (FM) 7-1. It establishes crewmember qualification, and refresher, mission, and continuation training and evaluation requirements. This manual applies to all CH-47D/F crewmembers and their commanders. The CH-47D is not a similar aircraft to CH-47F. The CH-47F is a similar aircraft to the CH-47G. This is not a stand-alone document; all requirements contained in Army regulations (ARs) and Training Circular (TC) 1-210 must be met. This manual is the governing authority for training and flight evaluation purposes only if differences exist between the maneuver descriptions in Technical Manual (TM) 1-1520-240-10 or TM 1-1520-271-10 and this ATM. TM 1-1520-240-10 and TM 1-1520-271-10 are the governing authority for operation of the aircraft. Implementation of this manual conforms to AR 95-1 and TC 1-210. This manual (with applicable ARs and TC 1-210) will help all levels of aviation commanders develop a comprehensive aircrew training program. By using the ATM, commanders ensure individual crewmember and aircrew proficiency is commensurate with the unit's mission and that aircrews employ standard techniques and procedures. This manual will be used as a "how to" source for performing crewmember duties. It provides performance standards and evaluation guidelines so that crewmembers know the expected level of performance. Each task has a description of the performance required to meet the standard. Standardization officers, evaluators, and unit trainers will use this manual and TC 1-210 as the primary tools to develop and implement their aircrew training program (ATP). This manual applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. This ATM describes training requirements for crewmembers. It will be used with AR 95-1, AR 600-105, AR 600-106, NGR (AR) 95-210, TC 1-210, and other applicable publications. The tasks in this ATM enhance training in individual and aircrew proficiency. The training focuses on accomplishing tasks that support the unit's mission. The scope and level of training to be achieved, individually by crewmembers and collectively by aircrews, is dictated by the mission-essential task list (METL). Commanders must ensure aircrews are proficient in the METL.

Book excerpt: In these “thought-provoking visions of the future” (The Wall Street Journal), Joe Quirk and Patri Friedman of the Seasteading Institute explain how ocean cities can solve many of our environmental, technological, and civic problems, and introduce the visionaries and pioneers who are now making seasteading a reality. Our planet has been suffering from serious environmental problems and their social and political consequences. But imagine a vast new source of sustainable and renewable energy that would also bring more equitable economies. A previously untapped source of farming that could produce significant new sources of nutrition. Future societies where people could choose the communities they want to live in, free from the restrictions of conventional citizenship. This extraordinary vision of our near future as imagined in Seasteading attracted the powerful support of Silicon Valley’s Peter Thiel—and it may be drawing close to reality. Facing growing environmental threats, French Polynesia has already signed on to build some of the world’s first seasteads. Joe Quirk and Patri Friedman show us how cities built on floating platforms in the ocean will work, and they profile some of the visionaries who are implementing basic concepts of seasteading today. An entrepreneur’s dream, these floating cities will become laboratories for innovation and creativity. Seasteading “offers hope for a future when life on land has grown grim” (Kirkus Reviews), proving the adage that yesterday’s science fiction is tomorrow’s science fact.

Book excerpt: "Point Cook has helped shape modern Australia. Near Melbourne on the shore of Port Phillip, it has been the location for a significant number of the country's aviation 'firsts'. From the birth of Australia's military aviation, through the encouragement of fledgling civil air services, to the training of many of the country's top military and commercial pilots, Point Cook has played a role second to none. Social historian Steve Campbell-Wright skilfully weaves a tale spanning a century that gives a glimpse into the often secretive world behind the gates to the Birthplace of Military Aviation. The tale abounds with the personal stories of those who were there, providing a fascinating mix of triumph and tragedy in a world experienced by very few in the nation's history"--Back cover.
