Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Practice and Education Taking up next the ports and the waterways, we find that, their boats being small, the works that they needed, and that they therefore executed, would not look large from our modern point of view; but, considering the times, some of them were magnificent pieces of engineering. As to ports, when they could they built them in a river, erecting quays of stone or wood. They took advantage of the shelter afforded by natural features, and built protect ing breakwaters when they needed them. When they could reach dry land to build upon they always did So, but when not, they sunk large stones, or cradles filled with masonry, locating them by means of divers, or else they built dikes, and ran in liquid concrete, which, on solidifying, formed, as it were, a solid rock. They had a great many ports all along the Mediterranean. They had, however, no efficient system of dredging, and their ports were always silting up. Of course, their navigable rivers formed the natural com. Mercial highways, as indeed they did everywhere before the introduction of railroads; hence, they carried out such improvements as they could, and such as were needed at thetime, by removing obstructions from the river beds and by building sea walls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineer His Work and His Education This book is dedicated to those who are considering engineering as a life work. Over fifty thousand stu dents are now studying engineering in colleges and universities of the United States, and about fifteen thousand are each year entering such training courses. They should know something about engineering as a profession and about the college course which helps them to prepare for it. The recent investigation of engineering education carried out with the support of the Carnegie Corporation through the initiative of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Educa tion has disclosed that too frequently the applicant for an engineering course has an erroneous or a very vague notion of the nature of engineering practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Education, Vol. 10 After all, it is of little importance whether my reflections are of the one kind, the consensus of your thoughts put into words, or of the other kind, original. As is usual with the work of an engineer, it is relatively immaterial whether it is original or not. It is all important that it be right. I would like to help toward correct conclusions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Engineering Education: Prepared for the Joint Committee on Engineering Education of the National Engineering Societies The present bulletin has been prepared under conditions somewhat different from other publications and bulletins of the Carnegie Foundation. This study of Engineer ing Education arose out of the action of a joint committee on engineering education, representing the principal engineering societies. More than three years ago the Com mittee had gathered a considerable amount of material bearing on the subject, and had come to the opinion that the work could be best carried out by the employment of some one trained in applied science, who should devote his entire attention to the study, working under the general direction of the Committee and in touch with it. The Carnegie Foundation agreed to appoint such a man and to bear the expense of the study. Professor Charles R. Mann, of the University of Chicago, undertook the work under these conditions, and the report which follows is the outcome of his studies under the general supervision Of the Committee. The discussion of Professor Mann's report by the Committee forms the introductory chapter. It will be understood that the report did not contemplate a study or examination of the engineering schools of the United States, altho a limited number of typical schools were visited and studied by Professor Mann. The point Of view from which the study was undertaken was the following: Fifty years ago, when the engineering schools of the United States were inaugurated, they began their work upon a definite teaching plan and one that had at least pedagogic consistency. The course was four years. The first two were spent mainly in the fundamental sciences - chemistry, phy sics, mathematics, and mechanics; the last two years mainly in the applications of these sciences to theoretical and practical problems. In the half century that has passed this course of study has been overlaid with a great number of special studies intended to enable the student to deal with the con stantly growing applications of science to the industries. While the original teaching plan remains as the basis of the four-year engineering curriculum, the courses given in most schools have been greatly modified in the effort to teach special subjects. As a result, the load upon the student has become continually heavier and bears unequally in different places and in different parts of the course. In addition there is a wide spread feeling that under this pressure the great body of students fail to gain, on the one hand, a satisfactory grounding in the fundamental sciences; and on the other hand, do not fulfil the expectations of engineers and manufacturers in dealing with the practical problems with which they are confronted on leaving the engineering schools. With the changes that will occur after the close of the war the demands will be much greater and new opportunities will open. To be able to meet the competition in business and industrial life, the young man of the future will need a much better preparation than can be obtained by a high-school course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Engineering Practice, Vol. 1 of 10: Steam, Electricity, Mechanics; Mathematics The American engineering student is flushed with triumph and is thrilled with the new opportunities before him. Within tenyears he has seen America succeed to premiership on lines of his own culture and effort. But there is more ahead in every direction. He hardly knows whether to go back into the technical school and ask his instructors for more years of training before he goes out at all, or to leap forward and continue the line of advance which his fellows have inaugurated. On the one hand, he is convinced that raw material and the primal and insistent forces of nature have been but crudely handled hitherto; on the other, he is fascinated by the fact that, even with his present possessions in knowledge and skill, the conquest is easy and sure. This is all true, if he looks upon the matter only as a competition evidently led by the technically trained American. But there is something more in it all, as we say, than the fact that as France and Germany won over England, so America has outrun the victors themselves in entering all markets and furnishing the highest sort of product. That something is this: Just at the time when America sees that she has not yet opened her most valuable resources at home, she is confronted with a sudden and well-nigh overwhelming gift of opportunity in her new realm abroad. That new realm is not, as we know in these days, to be subdued by armies with cannon and sword; it is to be brought safely and loyally in league with our American position by the conquest of ideas and ideals. Among the leaders of such an advance, the engineering student in this our practical age is likely to be foremost. Surely no educational scheme can neglect to furnish him with knowledge and with skill, whether the American remain at home or go abroad to do his work; and surely least of all can the young American afford to forego the knowledge and skill which will give him mastery here or else where.
