Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Engineering Specifications and Contracts: Designed as a Text-Book and Work of Reference for All Who May, Be Engaged in the Theory or Practice of Engineering In preparing a piece of work for letting, the duties of the Engineer are manifold. He must first of all have a clear conception of the thing to be done, and must give graphical expression to this idea, both by drawings and writing. It then becomes necessary to inform himself as to the probable cost of the proposed work, and if within reasonable limits, and he desire to let it, he must next notify contractors, and others, by such public announcements as will reach the largest number of reliable parties. It is thus seen that the preparation of the drawings, estimates, specifications and advertisements are all. duties of the Engineer, which he has heretofore been allowed to learn as necessity required, and often on the spur of the moment. But his duties do not end here; to insure the rapid and faithful execution of the work, he generally prepares the form of bid, with certain "instructions to bidders," giving restrictions with which they must comply to render their bids valid, and finally, to adopt a form of agreement which shall be approved by both parties to the contract. The duties of the contractor are simply to examine drawings and specifications, or the site of the work, present his bid, and, if successful, sign the contract and furnish the required securities. The construction of the work is foreign to the object of this book. These six steps are developed more fully in the corresponding chapters which follow. Site planning activities are presented here in logical sequence, offering an efficient and safe design of the construction site and of the temporary works. The book describes the process of engineering preparation of on-site construction works in all phases of the construction life-cycle, from the design phase - preparing the financial plan and procurement scheme for the owner before tendering the contract; the tendering phase; and after bid completion. A list of procedures is presented for planning the construction site in order to simplify the engineer’s work of site and temporary works planning. The Engineer’s Manual of Construction Site Planning is for all those involved in the planning of construction sites, construction managers, construction engineers and quantity surveyors, as well as for students in civil engineering and construction.

Book Synopsis An Employer's and Engineer's Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract by : Michael D. Robinson
Download or read book An Employer's and Engineer's Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract written by Michael D. Robinson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When all parties involved in the construction process fully understand their roles and are able to anticipate potential points of conflict, disputes and delays will be minimised. The Employer’s and Engineer’s Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract sets out the essential administrative requirements of a FIDIC based contract by reference to the FIDIC 1999 Red Book. The obligations and duties of the Employer and the Engineer are identified and discussed. Potential pitfalls are highlighted and likely consequences pointed out. The importance of the Employer’s role in the preparation of tenders, which fully reflect his requirements and duties and obligations arising in the execution of the works, is emphasised. The key role of the Engineer in the effective administration of contracts after award is examined and commentary provided. Included in the guide are a number of appendices, including model letters which will be of value to less experienced staff (particularly those whose mother-tongue is not the English language). Engineers, quantity surveyors and project managers engaged in the contractual administration of international projects using FIDIC forms of contract will find the concise guidance in simple and jargon-free language provided here invaluable. This, together with the author’s earlier book, Contractor’s Guide to the FIDIC Conditions of Contract - which describes the duties, rights and responsibilities of the Contractor – represents the totality of supervision, design and execution of construction projects executed under the FIDIC Conditions of Contract. This book’s companion website offers invaluable resources to freely download, adapt and use: Model letters for use by the Employer Model letters for use by the Contractor Sample Interim Payment Certificate Model Form for Submissions to the Engineer Model Form of Engineer’s Order for Varied Works Model Form of Daywork/Daily Record Sheets
